Tribe Talk 8.30.15: Sandy Alomar Jr. Isn't The Best Choice #Indians

By @DaSportsGenius7

There's a controversy within the Cleveland Indians fanbase that has been brewing since the news of Mark Shapiro and the Toronto Blue Jays possibilities first surfaced.  As Indians fans know, Manager Terry Francona has an opt out clause that if Antonetti or Shapiro were to leave, he could seek another opportunity.  My belief is if Shapiro left, he's taking Francona with him to Toronto, a situation I'm sure Francona can thrive in.  But the controversy is with who would replace Francona.  A lot of Indians fans have been waiting for the opportunity to have fan favorite Sandy Alomar Jr finally get his shot as Manager of the Indians.  I know I'm in the minority about this, but I think the time for Sandy to be named the manager of the Indians has passed.  The opportunity was when Sandy took over as the interim manager and showed he could do the job.
Instead the Indians went out and got Terry Francona to manage and the Indians have been extremely fortunate that Sandy has stayed all this time.  While I firmly believe the reason Sandy has stayed is because he's been guaranteed the manager's job when Franonca leaves, I don't think the possibility of Shapiro and possibly Antonetti gone too was weighed in that scenario.  So now I'm going to explain to the Tribe fan base that as nice as it would be that Sandy could be named the manager, I'm going to argue that the best manager choice does lie elsewhere.  Before I get to my choice for manager, let me examine a few other names.

David Wallace (AA Akron Manager)- All I know about Wallace is that the Indians are extremely high on David Wallace and has experience working with guys like Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor, and Giovany Urshela that really could help in their continued progression at the Major league level.  He led the Rubberducks to a 73-69 record last year, and is on pace to again finish above .500 this year.  His only bad year as a manager was with High-A Carolina.  Look at that roster, outside of Lindor and Wendle, nobody was hitting down there.  Again I've only heard great things about him at Akron and I know the Indians are looking at him as a potential future manager.  He's only 35 right now so he's got time to still make his name known in the Minors.  I think though he's an up and coming name to watch out for.

Mike Sarbaugh (3rd Base Coach for Indians)- A few years ago when the Indians fired Manny Acta, I was clammoring for him to take over as the Indians manager.  The big plus for Sarbaugh is that he has very strong relations with the core of this team as he managed them as they were coming up.  As a manager in the minors, he was a standout coach and in 9 seasons was 697-511 (.577).  He has an outstanding knowledge of the game and great leadership ability.  Whether the Indians hire him or not as the manager, at some point he's going to get his shot.  I wouldn't be stunned in the slightest if he thrived in the bigs.  By the way with that record, in 9 years, he NEVER had one losing season.  That's impressive with how unpredictable the minors can be with call-ups and send downs.

Torey Lovullo (Interim Manager for Boston Red Sox)- I'm throwing Lovullo in here because he was another former candidate after Acta was fired.  In fact from my understanding, Lovullo was almost hired as the manager.  If I'm an Indians fan I'm closely monitoring how the Red Sox play under Lovullo.  The Red Sox season has been a disaster and I'd be very interested with a mediocre pitching staff and a potentially very good offense, can the Red Sox make some sort of run under him.  If they do that, I'd strongly consider him to replace Francona.

Jason Giambi (Retired MLB Player)- If Francona were to leave, I'm not ruling out the darkhorse here.  Giambi makes a lot of sense if you think about it.  OVer the past 2 years the one constant in the clubhouse was Giambi and his veteran presense.  The players respected him as he led by example.  He took the year off to focus on himself and family.  I truly believe after what he's meant to the team from a leadership standpoint, plus he's got a high Baseball IQ to do the job, I'd interview Giambi for the job.  Would I offer it?  He'd have to blow me away.

Mickey Callaway (Indians Pitching Coach)- Okay in response to a certain unnamed Twitter account, you think he's another Bryan Price?  I'm sorry did Cincinnati ever have one of the most potent rotations with up and coming plus rejuvinated career pitchers?  NO!  Mickey Callaway not only helped the development of Danny Salazar, Trevor Bauer, and Corey Kluber but he's rejuvinated the careers of Scott Kazmir and Ubaldo Jimenez.  He isn't a one dimensional pitching coach.  He develops and motivates his players.  Can anyone name me a pitching coach get so fired up he gets ejected?  Because that happened to Callaway this year.  The man has fire and isn't afraid to get in his players faces when needed.  Callaway comes across as the manager type.  The players already respect him and I believe will follow him.  I truly believe Mickey Callaway is the perfect replacement for Francona.

Now I'm not going to sit here and say hiring Sandy Alomar might be a disaster, but to the fans, your premise for hiring him makes ZERO SENSE.  Your argument for Sandy Alomar is as valid as Cardale Jones being the Browns savior at QB.  Sandy is 3-3 as a manager and has zero experience elsewhere as a manager.  When you make an argument, you must have concrete evidence to make a good argument.  The Indians fans argument is, "Well he's a 90s Indians fan favorite, so he can't fail!"  What happens in the scenario of one of your 90s heros fails?  Right now I can make a stronger argument for Mike Sarbaugh as manager than Sandy.  I think Sandy as all the qualities you want in a manager, but sadly Cleveland the opportunity to do it was 2012 and Cleveland hiring Terry Francona.  The ship has passed and I urge Cleveland Indians fans to not let fan favorite feelings cloud your judgement on who might make a great manager.  I know the 90s were great for the Tribe, but it doesn't mean you put them on a coaching staff, they're going to thrive.  How did Eddie Murray work out as hitting coach?  Trust me I want nothing but the best for my Indians, but at the end of the day, you look at the resumes and what the candidates have done, it's obvious that Mickey Callaway in my opinion is the best choice to replace Francona at this moment.  I'm sorry to the Sandy Alomar fans, but the harsh reality is that you're basing your argument as a fan and not as an educated fan.  This is living proof that fans should not run teams.  The Indians have 3 people on the Major League staff that could manage, its Cleveland's responsibility to evaluate who is the guy.  Sit on it and think about it for a while, Mickey Callaway is the way to go.

*** NXT ***

- This week's NXT was a replay of the four pre-show matches for NXT TakeOver Brooklyn. Check out my recap of Takeover: Brooklyn from Saturday night.

*** Smackdown ***

- This week's Smackdown took place in Providence, Rhode Island.

- The Wyatt Family Introduce Braun Strowman As Their Newest Member: Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Braun Strowman kick off Smackdown with a in ring promo. Harper says we've been all told lies, we are already dead and Bray's truth will give us new life. Bray says family means everything to him and Strowman is the little black sheep. Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose interrupt and head to the ring. Reigns says he may get his ass kicked, but he'll go down swinging. Ambrose says he'll take the ugly one and they both go after The Wyatt Family. The Wyatt's retreat and leave the ring.

- The Dudley Boys defeated The Ascension, by pinfall: The match closes out with some Wazzup and Bubba calls for the tables. Viktor and Konnar attack Bubba, while Devon is getting a table. Devon is back in and hits a neck breaker, but The Ascension regains control. Bubba blind tags back in and sends Viktor to the floor. The Dudleys hit 3D on Konnar and score the pinfall. After the match, The Dudleys grab a table as The New Day come out with anti-Dudley Boy signs. The New Day stop and look on as the Dudleys power bomb Viktor through a table and stare down The New Day.

- Kevin Owens defeated Neville, by pinfall: The match closes out with Neville going for a suicide dive, but Owens side steps him. Neville comes back, lands a kick and sends Owens back into the ring. Neville goes to the top rope, but gets kicked by Owens. Owens plants Neville with the pop up power bomb and scores the pinfall.

- Backstage, Charlotte and Becky Lynch argue with The Bella Twins over who's the better team. The Bellas try to turn Team PCB on each other. Becky says they respect each other too much to turn on each other and then brings up the fact that the Bellas turned on each other last year. Charlotte and Becky leave as Nikki tells Brie not to listen to them.

- Becky Lynch and Charlotte defeated The Bella Twins, by pinfall: The match closes out with Brie working over Charlotte and her knee until Charlotte fights back, back drops Brie and goes for the tag to Becky. Nikki pulls Becky off the apron stopping the tag, but Becky lays out Nikki on the floor. Charlotte rolls up Brie and applies a bridge to score the pinfall.

- Seth Rollins Sends A Warning To Sting: Seth Rollins is in the ring for a promo. Rollins brags about his accomplishments, becoming a WWE World Heavyweight and United States Champion at the same time and August 23rd should be a national holiday. Rollins says his statue ceremony was ruined by Sting, who's jealous of Rollins' success, Sting needs to be afraid of Rollins and promises to come through on what Triple H failed to do at Wrestlemania.......end Sting's career.

- Backstage, Sheamus says he's going to kick Dean Ambrose's head off, he can do what ever he wants cause he's Mr. Money In The Bank and the future WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

- Ryback and Dolph Ziggler defeated Big Show and Rusev, by pinfall: The match closes out with Show blocking a Famasser from Ziggler and plants him with a reverse power bomb. Rusev tags himself in and taunts Show, which he's been doing the whole match. Rusev stomps Ziggler's back and applies The Accolade submission. An angry Show lands the knockout punch on Rusev, laying him out. Show leaves Rusev alone as Ziggler covers and scores the pinfall.

- Sheamus defeated Dean Ambrose, by pinfall: The match closes out with Sheamus going for the Brogue Kick, but Ambrose ducks and hooks Dirty Deeds. Sheamus counters it, but Ambrose knocks down Sheamus. The lights suddenly go out for a split second. When the lights come back on Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and Braun Strowman have the ring surrounded. Ambrose turns his attention to the Wyatt Family and misses Sheamus run in and nail Ambrose with the Brogue Kick. Sheamus covers and scores the pinfall.
After the match, The Wyatt Family surround Ambrose in the ring, but Roman Reigns hits the ring to try to make the save. Reigns hits the Superman Punch on Harper, then goes after Strowman. Reigns lands punches on Strowman, but it doesn't faze the monster. Strowman tackles Reigns and locks in the choke hold. Strowman chokes Reigns out and then drops Reigns with an over the shoulder back breaker, as Bray looks on and laughs to close out the show.

- There is a chance Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving may not be available for the season opener on October 27th when the team visits the Chicago Bulls. While rehabilitation has been going smoothly, the Cavs are in no rush to plug him back into the starting lineup. The original 3-4 month timetable for his return has been slightly altered so he can at 100% and be fresh for the playoffs with so setbacks. According to one team source, Irving maybe out until January. In his absence, the Cavs have newly acquired Mo Williams and the re-signed Matthew Dellavedova to hold down the position until his return.

- The Browns worked out and signed reserve quarterback Pat Devlin yesterday. He is listed at 6’3”, 220 pounds and is in his third season out of Delaware. Devlin, 27, was originally signed by the Miami Dolphins in 2011 and played with them until 2013. He was apart of the Minnesota Vikings quarterback group in 2014 and spent part of the 2015 offseason with the Chicago Bears. It’s not expected for Devlin to be a long term solution for the Browns, as he is expected to get cut when the roster needs to be trimmed down to 53 on September 5th. He is nothing more than a camp arm to give Johnny Manziel a chance to rest his sore elbow for the remainder of the preseason.

The Browns released OL Ryan Seymour to make room for Devlin. Seymour is currently serving a four game suspension for use of PEDs.

- Yesterday's Browns Berea Bike Brigade included Phil Taylor (DL), Ish Kitchen (DL), Michael Bowie (OL), Justin Gilbert (DB), Robert Nelson (DB) and K'Waun Williams (DB).

- Here’s the uniform combination for Saturday’s Browns vs. Buccaneers game:

- Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is facing 4-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy. The NFLPA and Bryant are appealing the suspension. This was will be Bryant's second violation since entering the NFL in 2014.

- Green Bay's Letroy Guion is suspended the first three games of the season for violating the NFL’s Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

- The details of the Patriots and Reggie Wayne contract have been disclosed and it is incentive laced. Wayne's 1-year deal is worth up to $2.3M and his contract includes a $1.1 million base salary which becomes fully guaranteed if he is on the Week 1 roster. The deal also has a roster bonus worth as much as $750,000 ($46,875 per game) and incentives up to $500,000 ($250,000 for 55 catches and $500,000 for 65 catches).

- Former Sixers and Nets star Darryl Dawkins has passed away at the age of 58. He earned his nickname of "Chocolate Thunder" for his rim shattering dunks. Dawkins was the first player ever drafted straight to the NBA out of high school. He averaged 14 points, 6 rebounds and 1 block in his 14 seasons in the NBA.

- The Hardy Boys Call Out Ethan Carter III: Matt and Jeff Hardy kick off Impact inside the ring with one thing on their minds......Ethan Carter III. Both Hardy's agree to the stipulation and it's set for next week.

- Jeff and Karen Jarrett enter the Impact Zone and promise that tonight will be monumental for them.

- Eric Young defeated Chris Melendez, by pinfall, to win Chris Melendez's prosthetic leg: The match closes out with EY stealing a pinfall, by rolling Melendez up and using the ropes for leverage. - Tigre Uno defeated DJ Z and Sonjay Dutt, by pinfall, to retain the TNA X-Division Championship: The match closes out with everyone attempting their finishers, but all are broken up. DJ Z and Dutt hit a double clothesline on each other. Dutt is back up first, lands a kick on DJ Z, but gets taken out after being dropped on the top rope. Uno is back in and german suplexes DJ Z into the corner. Uno puts DJ Z on the mat, climbs to the top rope and hits the Frog Splash. Uno covers, scores the pinfall and walks out still the TNA X-Division Champion.

The Wolves drop Abyss in the corner and hit coast to coast drop kicks. James Storm jumps in and distracts Davey Richards, allowing Manik to regain control. Mahabali Shera goes after Storm and The Wolves take back control of the match. The Wolves hit their powerbomb/backcracker combo, cover and score the pinfall, to retain the TNA World Tag Team Championship.

- Jeff Hardy Gives His Opinion On Next Week's Stipulation: Jeff Hardy is in the ring and let's it be known that it's not about the money, the time, the stipulation or anything related to him. It's all about his brother, Matt Hardy, living his dream and becoming the TNA World Heavyweight Champion.

- Brooke Tessmacher defeated Velvet Sky, by DQ. Brooke retains the TNA Knockout's Championship: The match closes out with Brooke and Velvet on the floor, trading forearm shots with each other. Brooke takes control when suddenly The Dollhouse hit the ring and attack Brooke from behind, causing the DQ. After the match, Taryn Terrell appears on the Impact Tron and introduces Rebel as the newest member of The Dollhouse.

Anderson lands a Finley Roll on Storm, then Anderson eats a spear from Lashley. Lashley goes to spear Roode, but gets hit with Last Call from Storm. Storm and Roode reform Beer Money for a split second as they hit their double suplex finisher. - Dixie Carter Makes Her Decision On Jeff Jarrett's Business Proposal: Jarrett and Dixie are in the ring talking about the old days when Jarrett helped run TNA with Dixie and how great things were going. Dixie is about to agree to let Jarrett run Impact weekly when suddenly Drew Galloway interrupts. Galloway says he finally put his Criminology degree to use and did some investigating. Both nights when Bully Ray and Drew Galloway were attacked, video footage found Jeff Jarrett's rental car leaving the scene of both crimes. Jarrett swears up and down that he had nothing to do with what happened and goes nose to nose with Galloway. Jarrett's wife, Karen, steps in and admits that she did it, because Jeff deserved both GFW and TNA with all the hard work he's done. Jeff tells Dixie that sometimes a man has to do what a man has to do and then low blows Galloway. The GFW roster hit the ring and beat the hell out of Galloway. Rockstar Spud and Robbie E hit the ring to help TNA, but are quickly beat down by GFW. The Wolves hit the ring to help TNA, but are also overpowered and beaten down by GFW. Jeff and Karen Jarrett pose in the ring with their GFW roster as Dixie stands on the entrance ramp, crying, to end the show.

Leadoff with Lee 8.27.15 #Browns #Manziel #NoahBrown #Cowboys

By @cleeverizon

- Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was in pads yesterday but did not throw. The Browns decided to rest his sore elbow for a third straight day. Coach Mike Pettine stated, "He's still experiencing a little soreness. It hasn't bounced back. Err on side of caution."

Manziel underwent a MRI and it showed no structural damage. He is not expected to play Saturday night when the Browns travel down to Tampa to face the Buccaneers. The Browns may look into signing another quarterback for the final preseason game.

- Yesterday's Berea bike brigade at Cleveland Browns practice included OL Michael Bowie (shoulder), OL Karim Barton, DB Justin Gilbert (hip), DB K'Waun Williams (abdomen), DB Robert Nelson (hamstring) and DL Ish Kitchen (groin).

- It seems as if the Browns are doing their due diligence on a prospect who could be their quarterback of the future.

No, finally… For real this time.

Browns scouts have been seeking background information on Michigan State's Connor Cook. The Cleveland native attended Walsh Jesuit High School and his former coach Gerry Rardin spoke to the Browns about Cook. I'm not going to put a lot of stock into these preliminary talks as there are other prospects I'm sure Cleveland will look at. Cardale Jones with Ohio State, Christian Hackenberg at Penn State, Trevone Boykin of TCU, Dak Prescott of Mississippi State, and Cody Kessler at USC. Cook may be the most NFL-ready quarterback in 2016 as Michigan State runs a pro-style offense.

- Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick tore his ACL and MCL in his right knee on Tuesday in practice and was placed on injured reserve. He is expected to be out for the season. Scandrick had two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one sack for the Cowboys last season. He recently signed a 5-year, $19M contract extension last spring.

- Michael Vick signed a 1-year, $1M contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski had surgery on his dislocated finger and was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform List (PUP).

- Rex Grossman signed a 1-year, $1M contract to backup Matt Ryan for the Atlanta Falcons. It was speculated that if the Browns placed Connor Shaw on the practice squad, former Browns and current Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan would attempt to sign him. The Browns have recently placed Shaw on injured reserve after injuring his thumb that required surgery.

- Osi Umenyiora signed a one day contract to retire with the New York Giants, after spending his final two season playing with the Atlanta Falcons.

He finishes 49th on the All-Time sack list with 85. His 75 sacks with the Giants places him fourth on the franchise sack list behind Michael Strahan (141 ½), Lawrence Taylor (132 1/2) and Leonard Marshall (79 1/2). In 2007 he set the team single game sack record with six against the Eagles. The New York Jets reached out to Omenyiora about possibly playing for them but he only wanted to be with the Giants.

- San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been charged by the California Grand Jury with misdemeanor sexual battery. Brooks faces a maximum of six months in jail. He was sent back to California and will not play in the Saturday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

- Mercedes Benz will be the official sponsor and have earned the naming rights of the Atlanta Falcons’ new football stadium. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is set to open in 2017 and Falcons owner Arthur Blank plans to bid for the 2019 or 2020 Super Bowl. The venue will also host the 2017 Peach Bowl and be the home to the Major League Soccer team, Atlanta United FC.

- Buckeyes wide receiver Noah Brown suffered a serious leg injury that sounds like it will be season ending for him. According to Urban Meyer, Brown suffered a broken leg that will require surgery. He was attempting a catch when he awkwardly fell on his leg and a pop sound was heard. Ohio State abruptly cancelled interviews and people in the building looked like they got the wind knocked out of them, according to reports. This was the first sign that something wasn't good within Buckeye Nation. Later the tweets started pouring out from players and coaches praying for Brown. He has had a breakout spring and was expected to be an opening day starter for the Buckeyes when they visit Virginia Tech on September 7.

- TMZ is reporting that Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose is being sued by an ex-girlfriend, accusing him of gang rape and drugging her. The victim listed as “Jane Doe” says they dated from 2011-2013. Rose allegedly invited “Doe” to his home where he slipped a drug into her drink with the intention of raping her. She escaped the home but Rose and his friends broke into her home and gang raped her while she was unconscious. “Jane Doe” states that she waited two years to file the charges because she was embarrassed. As of now, Derrick Rose has declined commenting about the alleged incident.

- Former Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez retired yesterday at the age of 29. Perez was most recently signed by the Baltimore Orioles and is serving a 50 game suspension for recreational drug use. He ends his career with 379 innings pitched, a 3.51 ERA and 133 saves.
