Wrestling Lockup with Brandon 8.23.16: RAW Recap

Wrestling Lockup with Brandon, brought to you by Triple Threat CLE, is back with this week's RAW Recap Edition. 

This week's RAW was live again in Brooklyn, New York, at the Barclays Center, for the finale of the three part weekend in New York City. Tonight's RAW saw the aftermath of Sunday night's Summer Slam event and the beginning of the Finn Balor era as the first ever WWE Universal Champion, sadly came to an end. A tournament to crown a new WWE Universal champion began with the finals set to take place next week on RAW. Also on the show Big E of The New Day battled Karl Anderson of The Club. Bayley made her RAW debut and battled Dana Brooke. Up and comer Johnny Knockout looks to defeat Braun Strowman. The Dudley Boys announced their retirement from wrestling.

- Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon Promo: Foley and Stephanie call out new WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor, as Balor has an announcement. Balor appears with a sling on his arm. Balor thanks everyone, was proud to be the first ever WWE Universal Champion and even thanks Seth Rollins for one hell of a match. Balor sadly announces that due to his shoulder injury suffered at Summer Slam he is vacating the championship, but promises to come back for it when he returns in 4 to 6 months. Seth Rollins hits the ring laughing and says now they can crown him as the rightful WWE Universal Champion. Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens, Enzo, Big Cass and Roman Reigns all hit the ring and want opportunities too. Foley says everyone deserves a shot. Tonight there will be a tournament with the finals for the WWE Universal Championship taking place next week on RAW.

- Seth Rollins vs. Sami Zayn: Kevin Owens distracts Zayn before the match allowing Rollins to attack from behind. The match closes out with Zayn missing the Helluva Kick and catching a Rollins knee. Rollins works over Zayn's ankle, causing Zayn's leg to buckle when he attempted a Michinoku Driver. Rollins plants Zayn with the Pedigree and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Seth Rollins, by pinfall, to advance in the WWE Universal Championship Tournament.

- Kevin Owens vs. Neville: Chris Jericho comes down to the ring mid match and distracts Neville. The match closes out with Neville missing the Red Arrow and catches an Owens super kick. Neville counters the pop up power bomb and goes for another Red Arrow on Owens. Jericho distracts Neville, forcing Neville to punch Jericho. Neville kicks Owens and goes back to the top rope. Owens cuts Neville off, hits a neck breaker and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Kevin Owens, by pinfall, to advance in the WWE Universal Championship Tournament. 

- The New Day Promo: Big E says he's back, New Day thank the fans for their long tag title reign and present a unicorn pinata filled with Booty O's cereal to celebrate. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson interrupt call this segment and the fans stupid and mock the champs. Gallows and Anderson demand their rematch, asks Kofi if he enjoyed the Magic Killer at Summer Slam and all their toys and props won't mean anything when they take their titles. Big E is sick of the talking and says he's teaching Anderson why New Day rocks.

- Karl Anderson vs. Big E: The match closes out with Luke Gallows trying to interfere, but gets stopped by Woods and Kofi. Big E hits the Big Ending on Anderson and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Big E, by pinfall.

- Titus O'Neil Promo: Titus rips on his former partner Darren Young, says he would've been the WWE Universal Champion if not for Young, Titus blames Young for Titus not getting title shots and opportunities and finally calls Young out. Young's life coach Bob Backlund hits the ring, grabs Titus and locks in the cross face chicken wing submission. Titus escapes and slams Backlund to the mat. Young hits the ring to help, but gets laid out by Titus with the Clash Of The Titus.

- A recap is shown of the Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton match.

- Backstage, Stephanie McMahon announces that Brock Lesnar giving Shane McMahon an F5 crossed the line and Lesnar will be punished.

- Rusev vs. Big Cass: The match closes out with Cass unloading on Rusev and the referee backs Cass off. Cass hits a slam and goes for the Empire Elbow, but Rusev rolls outside. Cass follows and sends Rusev into the steel steps. Rusev lands a thrust kick, but Cass comes back with a big boot. Rusev ends up walking out and taking the count out.
Winner: Big Cass, by Countout, to advance in the WWE Universal Championship Tournament.

- Backstage, Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens argue over both wanting to be the WWE Universal Champion.

- Charlotte Promo: Charlotte brags about winning back the WWE Women's Championship. Mick Foley interrupts and promises Sasha Banks will get her rematch when she returns from injury, but until then, Foley wants to announce the newest member of RAW. It's Bayley! Bayley hugs Foley and says she can't believe this is happening. Charlotte mocks Bayley and says Foley is out of touch with reality. Bayley says she respects Charlotte, but she's here to take her championship. Charlotte says she's not dressed to wrestle, but Dana Brooke will fight her. Foley makes it official and that match is now.

- Bayley vs. Dana Brooke: The match closes out with Dana grounding Bayley and taking control. Dana lands a series of punches and gets a near fall. Dana talks trash, but gets sent to the corner by Bayley. Bayley lands a spinning elbow on Dana and then hits Bayley To Belly for the pinfall.
Winner: Bayley, by pinfall.

- Backstage, Roman Reigns says he's shutting Chris Jericho's mouth tonight.

- Backstage, Sheamus makes fun of Cesaro and Brooklyn's sports teams. Next week will be match #2 in their best of seven series.

- Braun Strowman vs. Johnny Knockout: Johnny says he's wrestling Strowman because he likes big sweaty men. Strowman makes quick work of Johnny with a corner splash followed by the reverse choke slam for the pinfall. After the match, Strowman slams Johnny again and orders the referee to make another pinfall.
Winner: Braun Strowman, by pinfall.

- The Dudley Boys Announce Their Retirement: Bubba says they were always respected because they busted their asses the past 20 years. Devon says it's been one hell of a career and would do it all again in a heartbeat. Bubba thanks the fans because without the fans their would be no Dudley Boys. The Shining Stars interrupt and head to the ring. Primo and Epico call the Dudleys an embarrassment, washed up and have two tickets to Puerto Rico for them.
Primo and Epico continue to mock the Dudleys until Bubba and Devon start unloading punches. The Dudleys hit a 3D on Epico and go to put Primo through a table. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson hit the ring and attack Bubba and Devon. Devon gets sent into the steel steps as Gallows beats down Bubba. Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer on Bubba. Devon tries to attack, but gets put through a table with the Magic Killer.  

- Roman Reigns vs. Chris Jericho: The match closes out with Reigns blocking the Code Breaker, but Kevin Owens runs down to the ring. Reigns takes out both Owens and Jericho and goes for the spear. Jericho counters and traps Reigns in the Walls Of Jericho submission. Reigns makes it to the ropes for the break, but Owens lands a cheap shot from outside. Jericho hits the Code Breaker on Reigns and gets a near fall. Reigns and Jericho slap each other and then Reigns hits a Superman Punch on Owens, who tries to get involved again. Reigns spears Jericho and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Roman Reigns, by pinfall, to advance in the WWE Universal Championship Tournament.


- Next week on RAW it'll be Seth Rollins vs. Kevin Owens vs. Big Cass vs. Roman Reigns in a Fatal Four Way Match to crown a new WWE Universal Champion.
