The Raven Report 8.27.14

-Its officially time to spread the "Love" in Cleveland. Yesterday, the Cavaliers held an introductory press conference for the recently acquired ex-Timberwolves forward Kevin Love. Love said that LeBron James called him after he made his decision to return to Cleveland in hopes of Love joining him. GM David Griffin mentioned that the Cavs have been trying to trade for Love for over a year. Though he is only under contract through this next season, Love did say that he was committed to Cleveland for the long term and wants to win championships here. Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said that he thinks Cleveland will "expose stuff like Love not playing much defense on their team". Personally, I feel that Love WILL play defense because he has renewed motivation and a breath of fresh air getting out of the basketball hell that is Minnesota. Mr. Taylor needs to worry about bringing a winning season to his own team this decade.

-In the final tune up for the FIBA World Cup of Basketball, the USA defeated Slovenia 101-71 in Bilbao, Spain. Anthony Davis led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving added 13. Davis and Kenneth Faried have been dominate forces in the paint. Team USA will open up against Finland on Saturday. A potential matchup versus Spain wouldn't come until September 14. Spain is definitely going to be a challenge with their roster that includes Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Ricky Rubio and others.

-In 10 innings, Zach Walters and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-6. Walters banged a two-run homer in the 10th to put the Tribe over. Bryan Shaw put in 2 and a third scoreless innings of work in relief to gain the win. Tonight, Tribe ace Corey Kluber will start about Chicago's Hector Noesi. Game time at 8 PM.

-ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the NFL has made its decision on the appeal for Browns' WR Josh Gordon. An announcement should finally come soon. I'm only saying soon because every time a date has been said, nothing has happened. On a related note, Gordon's hearing for a July DWI in North Carolina was rescheduled to November 18.

-The NFL fined the Seattle Seahawks $200,000 and coach Pete Carroll $100,000 and will lose 2 double practices in 2015 for violating no-contact rules in offseason practices.

-Italian soccer star Mario Balotelli was transferred (traded) from AC Milan to Liverpool last week for £16million, about $26.5million in American dollars. He is expected to make his debut for Liverpool at Tottenham on Sunday.

-US soccer star goalkeeper Tim Howard is taking a break from soccer for a year. The 35-year-old Howard will not play again for the United States until September 2015. On Monday, Howard signed a book deal, so be on the lookout for that.

- In some entertainment news, comedian Mike Epps has been cast to play legendary comedian Richard Pryor. It's being brought to the big screen by Lee Daniels (The Butler, Monster's Ball, Precious) and Oprah Winfrey. Oprah will also star in the movie as Pryor's grandma. Before his 2005 death, Pryor himself endorsed Epps to play him on film.
