NXT Takeover: San Antonio Recap

Wrestling Lockup with Brandon, brought to you by Triple Threat CLE brings you the NXT Takeover: San Antonio recap.

WWE kicked off Royal Rumble Weekend with the first stop on the tour, with NXT. NXT Takeover: San Antonio took place at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas. NXT World Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defended his title against Bobby Roode. NXT World Tag Team Champions #DIY defended their titles against The Authors of Pain. NXT Women's Champion Asuka defended her title in a Fatal Four Way Match against Nikki Cross, Peyton Royce and Billie Kay. "Perfect Ten" Tye Dillinger battled the leader of SAnitY Eric Young in a one on one match. Roderick Strong battled  Andrade "Cien" Almas in a one on one match.

** NXT Takeover Pre-Show **
NXT announces its 2016 year end awards on tonights Pre-Show before the pay per view kicks off.

- NXT Breakout Star of the Year goes to Peyton Royce and Billie Kay. Peyton and Billie accept their award and promise that they are winning the NXT Women's Championship tonight together.

- NXT Match of the Year goes to #DIY vs. The Revival from NXT Takeover: Toronto.

- NXT Tag Team of the Year goes to The Revival. The Revival state that they will be watching tonight's #DIY vs. The Authors of Pain match and will be coming for their tag team titles next.

- Backstage, Bobby Roode promises that he will be walking out of San Antonio tonight as the new NXT World Champion and it'll be GLORIOUS.

- Ember Moon states that she wants Asuka to retain the NXT Women's Championship tonight so she can be the one to defeat her for it.

- Backstage, #DIY talks about winning the NXT Match of the Year Award and state that they are retaining their NXT World Tag Team Championship tonight.

- NXT Female Competitor of the Year goes to Asuka. Peyton Royce and Billie Kay interrupt, state that there was a mistake in the voting and take Asuka's award.

- NXT Male Competitor of the Year goes to Shinsuke Nakamura.

- NXT Best Competitor of the Year goes to Shinsuke Nakamura.

** NXT Takeover: San Antonio **

- Tye Dillinger vs. Eric Young: Before the match, Young gives Dillinger one more chance to join SAnitY and hands Dillinger the SAnitY jacket. Dillinger tosses the jacket in Young’s face and lands a punch to start things off. The match closes out with Young hitting a neckbreaker on Tye for a near fall. Tye hits a mid air dropkick on Young, grabs Young by his beard and head butts Young in the chest. Young heads to the top rope, but Tye meets him there and superplexes Young to the mat for a near fall. Tye sets up for the Tye Breaker, but Wolfe jumps on the apron. Tye flips Wolfe into the ring and then hits Wolfe with the Tye Breaker. Big Damo gets in the ring, but gets taken out by Tye.
Young attacks Tye from behind, but Tye counters and gets a near fall roll up. Tye hits the Tye Breaker on Young and covers, but Wolfe and Damo put Young’s foot on the rope, breaking the pinfall. Tye suicide dives outside and takes out Wolfe and Damo. Young counters a Tye crossbody with a roll through into a near fall roll up. Tye baseball slides Damo outside, sending Damo into Wolfe. Young catches Tye on the distraction, hits the wheel barrel neckbreaker and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Eric Young, by pinfall.

- Samoa Joe is shown sitting in the crowd watching tonight's pay per view.

- Roderick Strong vs. Andrade "Cien" Almas: The match closes out with Strong catching a Almas kick, but Almas counters and hits a backbreaker on Strong. Almas applies a submission hold on Strong, but Strong fights it and gets his foot on the ropes for the break. Almas unloads elbows then goes for a moonsault, but Strong crotches Almas. Strong drops Almas to the mat and gets a near fall. Almas counters a scoop slam by Strong. Strong counters the hammerlock DDT, but Almas counters that and hip tosses Strong into the corner. Strong counters the Almas running knees, bur Almas hits a clothesline on Strong. Almas charges and connects with the running knees on the second attempt and goes for the hammerlock DDT. Strong counters the DDT and nails a knee to the face of Almas. Strong slams Almas and then hits the Sick Kick to score the pinfall.
Winner: Roderick Strong, by pinfall.

- "NXT World Tag Team Championship Match": #DIY (c) vs. The Authors of Pain: The match closes out with Gargano unloading on Akem in the corner with punches. Ciampa tags in and he and Gargano double team Akem until Akem drops Gargano. Rezar comes in and helps double team Ciampa with a neckbreaker, sitdown power bomb combo for a near fall. AOP go for The Last Chapter on Ciampa, but Gargano makes the save and sends Rezar to the floor. Ciampa gets a near fall roll up on Akem and then traps Akem in an armbar submission. Rezar tries to make the save, but Gargano traps Rezar in an armbar submission. Both AOP members try to hold on from submitting as Paul Ellering yells at them not to tap out.
Rezar powers out of his submission and power bombs Gargano on top of Ciampa to break his submission. Both teams trade shots back and forth with each other and then DIY go for a double team. AOP both catch Ciampa and Gargano and drop both with power bombs. AOP hit The Last Chapter on Ciampa and score the pinfall to win the titles.
Winners: The Authors of Pain, by pinfall, to win the NXT World Tag Team Championship.

- Seth Rollins Invades: Seth Rollins comes out of the crowd and gets in the ring. Rollins says he's not leaving until Triple H shows his face. Triple H appears on the NXT stage and orders security to escort Rollins out of the building. Security hit the ring, but Rollins unloads on everyone, trying to get after Triple H. Security finally over power Rollins and drag him out of the building.

- "NXT Women's Championship, Fatal Four Way Match": Asuka (c) vs. Nikki Cross vs. Billie Kay vs. Peyton Royce: The match closes out with Nikki hitting a dive to the floor and takes everyone out. Billie and Peyton double team Nikki and toss her into the barricade. All three ladies brawl up to the announcers area, where Nikki climbs on top of the announcers table. Nikki goes for a dive, but Billie trips Nikki off the table and Nikki face plants on the floor. Peyton and Billie both beat down Nikki and then power bomb her right through a table, leaving Nikki laid out. Peyton and Billie now double team Asuka and toss her back into the ring.
Peyton and Billie both try to pin Asuka, but Asuka kicks out. Referee's are checking on Nikki outside the ring as Asuka starts a comeback and unloads on Billie. Peyton plants a kick on Asuka and then hits the Widow's Peak for a near fall. Asuka destroys both Peyton and Billie with a stiff kick to the head, scores the pinfall and retains the title.
Winner: Asuka, by pinfall, to retain the NXT Women's Championship.

- "NXT World Championship Match": Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Bobby Roode: The match closes out with Nakamura hitting the Kinshasa, but Roode kicks out at two and a half. The referee checks on Roode as he rolls to the apron. Nakamura hits a knee on Roode, but injures himself and falls to the floor. Nakamura hits another Kinshasa on Roode, but Nakamura goes down again clutching his injured leg. The referee and the NXT trainer both check on Nakamura as he's screaming in pain.
Nakamura pushes the trainer away and gets back into the ring, demanding to finish the match. Nakamura crawls into the ring and immediately gets beat down by Roode. Roode hits a DDT on Nakamura, but Nakamura somehow kicks out at two and a half. Roode growing frustrated locks Nakamura in a single leg crab submission. Nakamura screams in pain, but refuses to tap out to Roode. Nakamura is able to finally escape, but gets planted by Roode with the DDT. Roode covers, scores the pinfall and wins the title.
Winner: Bobby Roode, by pinfall, to win the NXT World Championship.
