On Deck Circle 7/17/17: 5 Bold Predictions For The MLB's Second Half

Baseball season is now past the unofficial midway point now that the All-Star game and festivities are complete. As the MLB season is back underway, we can look at what’s ahead for the 2nd half of the season and make some predictions on what’s to come. So let’s not only make some predictions, but let’s go out on a limb and make some real bold ones here. These predictions may not seem likely but there’s no telling what could happen with this many games left to play still, so let’s jump right into it here with 5 bold predictions for the 2nd half of the MLB season.

1. The Yankees will not make the playoffs – So I’ll get started with a bold-lite prediction here and call the Yankees and non-playoff team. The Yankees got off to a hot start in April and lead the division through May and are now in the playoffs as a wildcard team so they’ve been a playoff team since the beginning of the season. They are just 6-18 since June 13th though and are tapering off rapidly, Boston has not only surpassed them for the division lead but the Tampa Bay Rays have also caught up to them and went into the All-Star break tied for the top wildcard spot. With the Twins, Royals, Angels and Rangers all within 3 games of the wildcard spot, it’s completely feasible that the Yankees miss out on the playoffs this season if they continue this type of play.

2. Carlos Correa or Jose Altuve will win AL MVP – This bold prediction is based off the previous prediction. Right now, Aaron Judge is the AL MVP and it’s not close, he has this all locked up right now. If the Yankees do miss the playoffs though and Aaron Judge hits a rookie wall, then that leaves the MVP up for debate. The Astros were an impressive 60-29 at All-Star break and on pace for roughly 110 wins this season, if they can win that many games then someone on the Astros will get big time consideration. Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve are the top 2 candidates and very similar in production, it will be a close call in which they will split votes and one will end up as the AL MVP.

3. The St. Louis Cardinals will win the NL Central – A 3rd place team that is 2 games under .500 and 5.5 games out of 1st place at all-star break, it would seem unlikely that any team under those circumstances would make a run at the division. But the Cardinals though have the benefit of playing a division that is still up for grabs, not sold on the Brewers yet and the Cubs are still a mess even with the acquisition of Jose Quintana(which the White Sox fleeced them in, btw.) The Cardinals’ bats need to wake up a bit and they can make up ground in no time, their pitching is amongst the best in the league and any team that has good pitching will have a shot at the postseason. Pitching stays where it is and bats heat up a bit, and the division is all theirs to win.

4. Pittsburgh Pirates will be biggest sellers as trade deadline approaches – Everyone right now is assuming that the Oakland A’s will be the biggest sellers, but let’s not be too sure about that. The A’s have Sonny Gray that will almost certainly be dealt and they will have other available assets such as Yonder Alonso and Khris Davis to deal as well. But the Pirates have more players that are worth trading for and being 7 games out of the division, it’s time to start dealing them. While I do not think Andrew McCutcheon will be traded, players like Gerrit Cole, Ivan Nova, Josh Harrison and Francisco Cervelli could all be on the move. Cole and Nova especially now that the market for starting pitching has been set with the trade of Jose Quintana to the Cubs, pitching will cost buyers a lot in order to deal so Pittsburgh can get younger real quick by trading either or both pitchers.

5. Bryce Harper and Clayton Kershaw will win the NL triple crown - In batting, the triple crown is when a batter leads the league in batting average, RBI's and home runs. This is one of the rarest feats in baseball, Miguel Cabrera accomplished it in 2012 but before then it was Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 and to stack the deck even more against Bryce Harper, there hasn't been a triple crown winner in the NL since 1937. That ends this year, Harper is currently 2nd in the NL in batting average, tied for 3rd in RBI's and tied for 7th in home runs(only 4 back of the current leader.) He is within striking distance of them all and will end up leading the National League in all 3 come season's end. The triple crown in pitching is a bit more common, when a pitcher leads the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts. Clayton Kershaw accomplished this once before, back in 2011 and he is primed to do it again this season.

He leads the league in wins and is 2nd in both ERA and strikeouts and is extremely close to being 1st in all 3. Max Scherzer has a 2.10 ERA while Kershaw has a 2.18 and Scherzer has 173 K's while Kershaw has 159, that slim margin is what is keeping Kershaw from currently leading in all 3. A batter and pitcher winning the triple crown in the same league in the same year has not happened since 1934 and has only happened once in the National League(back in 1884, I'm sure we all remember that), but this year we will get to witness a rare phenomenon as both Bryce Harper and Clayton Kershaw will be triple crown winners.

This Week In The Show 11.14.16: 2016 MLB Awards For An Unforgettable Season

Another season is in the books and the Chicago Cubs have ended their 108 year drought and for the first time since Tinkers to Evers to Chance and “The Merkle Boner” the Cubs are World Series Champions.  Now that the games are done, we’ve entered into Awards Season where Major League Baseball will announce their most outstanding players and managers throughout the 2016 MLB Season.  Now before I get into my picks, let’s look back to my Preseason picks to see where we started from and how we got here.

My MLB Awards Preseason Picks

AL MVP and Dark horse- SS Carlos Correa HOU, OF Mookie Betts BOS
NL MVP and Dark horse- 1B Paul Goldschmidt ARI, SS Corey Seager LAD
AL Cy Young and Dark horse- SP Chris Sale CWS, SP Danny Salazar CLE

First off, a couple of observations…man did I have too much faith in the Diamondbacks or what?  Goldschmidt had a great year, but Shelby Miller?  I apologize with my stupidity on that one.  I also bought into the Correa/Houston hype train as well.  Overall though looking at the season, I don’t think I’m too far off on a few of these.  So now that I’m done with laughing at myself and seeing where we started at the beginning of the year, we can jump into my picks now that we’ve seen how the season has happened.

AL MVP: Mookie Betts, Boston Red Sox- My Preseason Dark horse pick after having an outstanding 2016 season is my pick for the AL MVP.  Betts followed up his first full MLB Season by hitting .318 (2nd in AL) and launching 31 HRs with 113 RBIs on top of his 26 steals.  We could easily dive into the other stats that make him worthy, but Mookie established himself in 2016 as the new face of the Boston Red Sox and quite possibly the best position player in the American League.  While there can be an extremely strong case for Mike Trout to win the MVP again, the difference here is Boston won its division.  Mookie was consistent all year long on a contender to easily be my pick with this award.

NL MVP: Kris Bryant, Chicago Cubs- After a sensational rookie year, expectations were extremely high for Kris Bryant and he delivered in 2016.  Bryant avoided the dreaded, “Sophomore Jinx” and hit .292 with 39 HRs and 102 RBIs, establishing himself as quite possibly the best 3B in Baseball.  What stands out to me is his OPS (On Base + Slugging Pct), which was a .939 OPS.  Anything above .900 is impressive, but Bryant cut down on his strikeouts in 2016 (199 in 2015 to 154 in 2016) and was clutch for the Cubs all year long.  While I think you can make cases for some others, unlike the American League this one seems a bit more clear of a decision.

Honorable Mention Nolan Arenado COL, Anthony Rizzo CHC, Daniel Murphy WAS, Corey Saeger LAD

AL Cy Young: Corey Kluber, Cleveland Indians- After a rocky 2015 season, Corey Kluber reestablished himself as one of the best, if not the best starter in the American League.  For the 3rd straight year, Kluber went struck out over 200 batters, and after going 9-16 in 2015, went 18-9 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP.  But what makes Kluber my pick goes beyond the numbers, the Indians all year relied on the arm of Kluber struggling through injuries in the rotation, plus inconsistency at the back of the rotation.  It seemed every time the Indians needed him to come up big, Kluber delivered.  You can’t teach that clutch ability Kluber brings that goes beyond the numbers.  Yes, you can make strong cases for Rick Porcello and Zach Britton.  But the circumstances throughout the year for the Indians and relying on a pitcher who came through almost every time, that makes Corey Kluber the choice for his 2nd AL Cy Young award.

NL Cy Young: Kyle Hendricks, Chicago Cubs- After 2 years of solid pitching in the rotation and being a question mark in the Cubs rotation going into the year, much like Cubs teammate Jake Arrieta came out of nowhere to be one of the most dominant pitchers in the National League.  Hendricks burst onto the scene going 16-8, leading the Majors in ERA at 2.13.  Hendricks ability to be able to locate his pitches made him almost a Greg Maddux type starter who teams just couldn’t seem to figure out.  The emergence of Hendricks was crucial for the Cubs who had Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta already.  I think a case could be made for Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw before his injury was going to win another Cy Young.  I will add I think Jose Fernandez might get quite a few votes here because of his dominance in the year before his tragic death.

AL Rookie of the Year: Gary Sanchez, New York Yankees- Yes, Gary Sanchez only played in 53 games this year, but those 53 games made us all think what he’s going to do in 162 games.  After being the one of the Yankees most hyped up prospects for at least the last 4 years, Sanchez finally got playing time in the Bronx and made the most of it.  In his 53 games, Sanchez would hit 20 HRs with 43 RBIs, hitting .299 and had an OPS of 1.032.  One can imagine if he played 162 games, he may not have just won the Rookie of the Year, but might’ve gotten MVP consideration.  His emergence made what looked to be after the Trade Deadline a “Rebuilding” Yankees franchise and had them in Wild Card contention until the last week of the year.  While Michael Fulmer on Detroit had a strong rookie year, Sanchez was just that outstanding in the time he had this year.

NL Rookie of the Year: SS Corey Seager, Los Angeles Dodgers- After showing promise in the last month of the 2015 season, the Dodgers had very high hopes for their #1 prospect in 2016.  Seager didn’t just live up to them, but exceeded them.  You could make a strong case that without Seager, the Dodgers aren’t even a playoff team.  Seager showed that he is the face of the Dodgers with Clayton Kershaw, giving NL West teams headaches for years to come.  He hit .308 with 27 HRs, 72 RBIs, and quietly also hit 40 Doubles, which for someone in their first full year is quite the accomplishment.  While teammate Kenta Maeda could make his own case along with Trea Turner, Seager emerged as the newest superstar in a young SS crop that is taking over Major League Baseball.

AL Manager of the Year: Terry Francona, Cleveland Indians- I really don’t need to explain this, do I?  I mean I’m not even going to put an honorable mention here, because this one should be a unanimous vote.  With the low expectations going into the year for the Indians, the loss of Michael Brantley for the year, and the injuries to the pitching staff late in the year, no one could’ve done much better with what Tito had to deal with.  Without question, Terry Francona is your AL Manager of the Year.

NL Manager of the Year: Dave Roberts, Los Angeles Dodgers- Yes, Joe Maddon and the Chicago Cubs had an outstanding year capped off with a World Series Championship…but we expected the Cubs to be a World Series contender in 2016.  After Don Mattingly and the Dodgers parting ways, the Dodgers made a rather bold hiring in Dave Roberts.  At one point in the year there was doubt that the Dodgers would win the division and with everything that could’ve gone wrong that did go wrong, the fact that Roberts got the Dodgers to be NL West Champions is nothing short of masterful managing.  So yes, Maddon in a way deserves the award, but looking at the circumstances for the Dodgers, Dave Roberts is my pick.

As we head into the offseason, we should take these awards as a way to look back at what was an unforgettable Baseball season that I think has re-energized what was a dormant fanbase that really only a few fanbases appreciated and now has Baseball emerging once again as what it is, the great American Pastime.  For some it was full of heartbreak, some cheered, some crying, and some started to imagine what the future holds in the 2017 Baseball season.  Well before you know it, Winter pass by and welcome in the Spring and guess what?  We get to do this all over again.

- Major League Baseball suspended newly acquired New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman for 30 games. The unpaid suspension is the first under the league's new domestic violence policy and the second disciplinary action taken against an accused player.  Chapman wasn't charged, but Manfred did say that the use of a gun contributed to the severity of the punishment. Aroldis Chapman won't appeal his suspension, because a deal was reached between the league and Chapman's agent and also including the MLB Players Association. "The MLBPA supports Mr. Chapman's decision to forgo his right to an appeal."

- The Rockets reached a buyout settlement with the point guard Ty Lawson Tuesday pending approval from the NBA. The Rockets acquired Lawson from the Nuggets in an offseason trade last year.He finished third in the NBA in assists with 9.6 per game last season. Early suitors for Lawson include the Cavs and Heat.

- Sam Bradford and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a two-year contract worth $36M including $26M guaranteed. Bradford was drafted by the St.Louis Rams with the number 1 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft. For his career he has thrown for 14,790 yards, 78 touchdowns and 80 interceptions.

- The Washington Redskins place non-exclusive franchise tag on QB Kirk Cousins, giving him 2,923 percent raise. After not being able to finalize a long term deal the Skins slapped the tag on him and he is due to make $19.9M for the 2016 season. Since the non-exclusive tag was placed on him Cousins is free to negotiate with any other team and maybe signed. The Redskins can match the offer or decline, if the offer is declined Washington will receive two first round picks in return.

- After battling back from Hodgkin's lymphoma to the Pro-Bowl the Kansas City Chiefs applied the non-exclusive franchise tag safety Eric Berry. The non-exclusive franchise tag for safeties sits at $10.8M. The sides have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term deal.

- The Buffalo Bills have released defensive end Mario Williams who was unhappy with the defensive scheme he was playing in with Rex Ryan. Williams suggested that he’d take a pay cut in order to stay in Buffalo, but the Bills have decided to just move on without him. Yankees starting pitcher C.C Sabathia announced he is going to check himself into a alcohol rehabilitation center and will be unavailable for the playoffs. In a statement released yesterday by Sabathia:

- The Washington Nationals fired coach Matt Williams and his entire staff after two seasons. They Expected to repeat as National League East champions and contend for their first World Series title, the Nationals and their team-record $164-million payroll finished with a 83-79 record and failed to reach the playoffs. Last year he was voted NL Manager of the Year after the Nationals finished with the best record in the league. In February, the Nationals exercised his 2016 contract option.

- The Major League playoffs start tonight as Dallas Keuchelv(20-8, 2.48 era) and the Houston Astros take on Masahiro Tanaka (12-7, 3.51 era) and the New York Yankees tonight at Yankee stadium.

- After losing 27-14 to the New York Jets on Sunday, the Miami Dolphins fired coach Joe Philbin on Monday. Since being hired in 2012, Philbin has led the Dolphins to a 24-28 record and started out 1-3 this year. Tight end coach Dan Campbell will serve as Miami's interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Campbell said he's going to evaluate the OC and DC to decide whether the team will retain them. Dolphin's defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is rumored to be fired from the team. Dolphins owner said in a statement, "I'm extremely disappointed with the way we have started the season, but I'm confident we can improve with the talent we have on our roster."

- The Browns waived offensive lineman Andrew McDonald from the practice squad and signed offensive lineman Ronald Patrick to the practice squad. Patrick is 6'2", 302 lbs and has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers and most recently the Dallas Cowboys.

- The Browns have until Wednesday to give a reason as to why cornerback Joe Haden did not play on Sunday. His game status was listed as "probable" which means he was almost certain to play.  If there was any doubt or question if Haden could not play, he should have been listed as "questionable. But in a last minute change, he was listed as "inactive." Ninety minutes prior to every game, each team must declare seven players inactive. Therefore the list of players that can actually play consists of just 46 players. I would assume Haden's status changed after the 90 minute window.

- Ohio State senior wide receiver Corey Smith is out for the year with a broken leg that he suffered Saturday against Indiana. There is a chance he can get a medical redshirt and return to the Buckeyes for the 2016 season.

- Tough blow for the Charlotte Hornets as forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will need shoulder surgery and be sidelined six months. Last season he averaged 10.9 points per game and 7.6 rebounds. Kidd-Gilchrist, 22, signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension in September.
