This Week In The Show 7.25.16: Top 5 Trades MLB Fans Want To See

We’re only a week away from the Trade Deadline and things over the weekend have heated with new teams emerging as potential buyers and sellers.  Now with the Trade Deadline a week away, I thought I’d finish up my 3-part series about the trading deadline with 5 deals the fans should be rooting for.  With this article I’m going to throw away my Indians bias and put on my MLB fan cap to find deals that will make the ride into October much more interesting.  I’ll admit most of these trades probably won’t happen, but in my opinion would make other Divisional and potential Pennant races that much more interesting.  So let’s get crazy with this shall we?

Jay Bruce to the Mets- The Mets need offensive help…FAST.  But trivia time!  Who leads the Mets in Avg., HRs, RBIs, Hits, SLG %, and On Base %?  Well there’s one answer…Yoenis Cespedes.  The Mets offense has been so pitiful that they’re relying on James Loney and Jose Reyes to fill the void for them.  That isn’t going to work.  Jay Bruce offers the kind of bat they need in the lineup to protect Cespedes.  Bruce is having a career year and most certainly could be the bat the Mets are looking for.  We know the Mets have the pitching to get the job done, but they need another big bat in this lineup, Jay Bruce offers that.  The Mets could offer up rehabbing SP Zach Wheeler who is young with big league experience that maybe in a year or two could become the pitcher most scouts thought he could become, a potential front of the rotation starter.

Trade Proposal- Mets acquire OF Jay Bruce in exchange Reds acquire SP Zach Wheeler

Chris Archer to the Dodgers- With Clayton Kershaw potentially out for a long time, the Dodgers are left to look at potential options on the market.  While Chris Sale would be a great fit in LA, the Dodgers have enough lefty starters.  Now remember, current LA Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman was the GM of Tampa Bay when they acquired Chris Archer from the Cubs.  We all know the Dodgers have an extremely talented and deep farm system that could easily make a move to get Archer.  Without Kershaw, Archer fits perfectly in LA and if Kershaw comes back this year, Kershaw and Archer will be nightmares for teams.  With Archer being locked up after signing a long term deal with Tampa Bay in 2015, the price will be steep, but the Dodgers can easily afford it.  I could also see Tampa Bay throw in a player to get rid of that might offer Dodgers depth to make another move.

Trade Proposal- Dodgers acquire SP Chris Archer and OF Desmond Jennings in exchange Rays acquire SP Jose De Leon, SP Grant Holmes, OF Starling Heredia

Wade Davis to the Nationals- And just like that…the Nationals get arguably the best closer in baseball.  With a good starting rotation and a solid lineup led by Bryce Harper, the Nationals are sitting pretty at the top of the NL East, only really lacking an elite closer.  While Jonathan Papelbon has done a good job, Wade Davis puts that bullpen over the top.  If the Nationals really want to bring a World Series back to Washington DC for the first time since Walter Johnson pitched them to one in the 1920s, they gotta get that elite closer.  Kansas City is being wise to shop him to replenish a farm system that was sold off last year to get Johnny Cueto and Ben Zobrist for their World Series run.  Nationals would really need to give a lot up for a rental, but Washington has to realize, to really have a chance to keep Bryce Harper, you gotta go for it to prove to him he should stay.

Carlos Beltran to the Indians- While this isn’t the biggest splash in the world, the Indians could really use another bat to bolster their lineup and Beltran fits the mold perfectly.  Having a great season at only 39 years young, Beltran is an experienced veteran who brings a middle of the order presence to the Indians.  More importantly Beltran has a great history performing in big spots in the playoffs.  With the uncertainty of Michael Brantley’s return, Beltran can provide a more stable option offensively playing in the OF.  While he is a downgrade defensively, the Indians need to find another bat as evidenced by the Indians struggles with RISP against the Orioles.  While the Indians need to find a reliever, they must find another bat for the middle of the lineup.

Trade Proposal- Indians acquire OF Carlos Beltran in exchange Yankees acquire SP Mike Clevinger and SS Yu-Cheng Chang

Chris Sale to the Astros- First off, how is no National reporter putting Houston in the mix?  Only 2.5 games back from the Rangers and starting to catch fire, the Astros are a perfect match for Chris Sale.  With 2015 Cy Young winner Dallas Kuechel struggling, they need an ace and Sale gives them that.  The Astros were my Preseason World Series pick and with Chris Sale supported by that Astros lineup…good luck everyone.  Reports have said that teams might have to pay 5 Top prospects, but after Chris Sale’s jersey fiasco Saturday night, the price might come down if the team doesn’t want to handle him anymore.  It will take a lot to get one of the best pitchers in the game and trust me, the Astros have the firepower to get him.

Trade Proposal- Astros acquire SP Chris Sale in exchange White Sox acquire SS Alex Bregman, OF Daz Cameron, SP Francis Martes, OF Derek Fisher, 2B/OF Tony Kemp


Now these trades aren’t predictions, but these are trades every fan should be rooting for to happen.  All of these trades would make the next few months of the baseball season very interesting.  While I don’t expect half of these to even happen, all I know is that these are very realistic scenarios for these players.  That will do it for my Trade Deadline Preview articles, you can bet I’ll have a Post-Trade Deadline article here next week.  We’re already seeing the madness of the Trade Deadline pick up and you can bet as teams finally figure out where they stand as buyers and sellers that the trade market will only intensify with trades we might not see coming.  Trust me we’ve seen trades come out of nowhere before and you can bet with this trade deadline, one thing is for sure, anything can and will happen at this Trade Deadline.

- Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper has unanimously won the National League MVP award. Harper hit 42 home runs, scored 118 runs and had a .470 on-base percentage, while batting .330. At 22 years and 353 days at the end of the season, Harper becomes the youngest player to win the award since Cal Ripken in 1983, and youngest since Johnny Bench in 1970 for the National League.

- Not to be outdone, Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson won the American League MVP award. In his fifth year, Donaldson hit 41 home runs, scored 122 runs and led the American League with 123 RBIs. Donaldson received 23 out of a possible 30 first place votes, besting Los Angeles Angels outfielder, Mike Trout.

- The Cleveland Indians signed former Twins outfielder Shane Robinson and catcher Adam Moore to minor league deals. In 2015, Robinson played in 83 games with the Twins, hitting .250 with a .299 OBP and a .322 SLG in 197 plate appearance. He'll add depth to the outfield as Micheal Brantley recovers from surgery.

Adam Moore spent most of the 2015 season at Triple-A Columbus, but was called up and played in a single game for the Indians on September 30.

- The 2016 NHL All Star Game will introduce a new wrinkle and will be changing into a 3-on-3 All-Star tournament. The tournament format will be comprised of three 20-minute games, played by divisional all-star teams competing for a winner-take-all $1 million prize, the NHL and NHL Players association announced yesterday. Each divisional all-star team will have 11 players: six forwards, three defensemen and two goalies. 

Fans will select one player from each division, without regard for position, in the 2016 NHL All-Star Fan Vote. Each NHL team will have at least one representative. The first two 20-minute games will be the semifinal round, with the Central Division all-stars playing the Pacific Division, and the Metropolitan Division all-stars playing the Atlantic Division. The winners will play for the championship in the third game. This will be the second year in a row the NHL has made changes to the games' format.

- The NFL will appeal the $1B settlement plan it's agreed to pay former players for CTE. If the settlement was to go forward without the appeal it would have covered 6,000 former NFL retired players for 65 years. They would receive an average of $190,000, although the awards could reach several million dollars in the most serious cases, which include young men with Parkinson's disease or Lou Gehrig's disease. Some of the 90 objectors complain that it compensates only a few neurological conditions, and not the depression and mood disorders they link to concussions and CTE. The 3 judge panel is expected to make a ruling early next year.

- For first time this spring, the NFL is expected to allow teams to begin trading compensatory draft picks. NFL owners are expected to approve the change in December at the next meeting. Compensatory picks are awarded in March. Under the rules, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a teams received equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.

Yankees starting pitcher C.C Sabathia announced he is going to check himself into a alcohol rehabilitation center and will be unavailable for the playoffs. In a statement released yesterday by Sabathia:

There is no word on how long he will be in the facility. But looks forward to return to the team next season.

- The Washington Nationals fired coach Matt Williams and his entire staff after two seasons. They Expected to repeat as National League East champions and contend for their first World Series title, the Nationals and their team-record $164-million payroll finished with a 83-79 record and failed to reach the playoffs. Last year he was voted NL Manager of the Year after the Nationals finished with the best record in the league. In February, the Nationals exercised his 2016 contract option.

- The Major League playoffs start tonight as Dallas Keuchelv(20-8, 2.48 era) and the Houston Astros take on Masahiro Tanaka (12-7, 3.51 era) and the New York Yankees tonight at Yankee stadium.

- After losing 27-14 to the New York Jets on Sunday, the Miami Dolphins fired coach Joe Philbin on Monday. Since being hired in 2012, Philbin has led the Dolphins to a 24-28 record and started out 1-3 this year. Tight end coach Dan Campbell will serve as Miami's interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Campbell said he's going to evaluate the OC and DC to decide whether the team will retain them. Dolphin's defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is rumored to be fired from the team. Dolphins owner said in a statement, "I'm extremely disappointed with the way we have started the season, but I'm confident we can improve with the talent we have on our roster."

- The Browns waived offensive lineman Andrew McDonald from the practice squad and signed offensive lineman Ronald Patrick to the practice squad. Patrick is 6'2", 302 lbs and has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers and most recently the Dallas Cowboys.

- The Browns have until Wednesday to give a reason as to why cornerback Joe Haden did not play on Sunday. His game status was listed as "probable" which means he was almost certain to play.  If there was any doubt or question if Haden could not play, he should have been listed as "questionable. But in a last minute change, he was listed as "inactive." Ninety minutes prior to every game, each team must declare seven players inactive. Therefore the list of players that can actually play consists of just 46 players. I would assume Haden's status changed after the 90 minute window.

- Ohio State senior wide receiver Corey Smith is out for the year with a broken leg that he suffered Saturday against Indiana. There is a chance he can get a medical redshirt and return to the Buckeyes for the 2016 season.

- Tough blow for the Charlotte Hornets as forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will need shoulder surgery and be sidelined six months. Last season he averaged 10.9 points per game and 7.6 rebounds. Kidd-Gilchrist, 22, signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension in September.

Leadoff with Lee 10.7.14

-The defending champion Seattle Seahawks defeated Washington 27-17 last night on Monday Night Football. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson led the surge with 201 yards passing and 2 touchdowns to go along with 122 rushing yards and 1 touchdown. Marshawn Lynch rushed for 72 yards of his own. Washington QB Kirk Cousins statistically looked better than his dismal outing last week with 283 yards, 2 TD's and 9=0 interceptions. But in the end, the Seahawks were just too much for them to handle. Week 6's Monday Night game will see the San Francisco 49ers travel to St. Louis to take on the Rams.

-The NLDS continues on! Using an error by Madison Bumgarner on a sacrifice bunt, the Nationals outlasted the San Francisco Giants 4-1 in Game 3 of their series. Bumgarner went 7 innings, giving up only 2 earned runs and recording 6 strikeouts. Doug Fister also pitched 7 innings, giving up zero earned runs and punching 3 strikeouts while picking up the win for the Nationals. Game 4 of this series will be tonight at 9 pm with San Francisco leading 2-1.

-Also continuing is the series between the St. Louis Cardinals and LA Dodgers after the Cardinals 3-1 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the 5 game set. John Lackey picked up the big win for the Cards after going 7 innings with 8 strikeouts. Kolten Wong had the big bat tonight with his 2-run homer. Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter and Jhonny Peralta each had doubles in the game with Carpenter also adding a home run in the 3rd inning off of Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. Game 4 of this series is the evening at 5 pm.

-So I can't do any Beats huh? Apparently the NFL said Richard Sherman the most superstar spokesperson for Beats by Dre cannot wear the highly popular headphones that he endorses. The same should apply for fellow endorser, the 49ers Colin Kaepernick. In August the league announced the deal to have Motorola become the replacement as the official outfitter of the coaches headsets and sidelines throughout the league. In my opinion, the NFL did not pay attention to pop culture. This is not about pop-culture it's about rights, culture, endorsements and of course, money.

-ESPN and TNT agreed to a new television rights deal with the NBA through 2024. These deals will take effect in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. After the season, both LeBron James and Kevin Love should be able to sign extended contracts to stay with the Cavaliers. James is also at the forefront of a group of players that want to do away with max contract restrictions.

-Following the Justin Masterson trade, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was traded to the Washington Nationals for infielder Zach Walters. Walters has played shortstop, third base, second base and left field. To me, it seems the Indians like the plug and play players in order to fill out their lineup in case of emergency or to give someone a rest. For now, Francisco Lindor will remain in Triple-A until the Indians can expand their lineup, barring injury, in September. Lindor already has Jose Ramirez and Mike Aviles ahead of him for the starting shortstop role. The Tribe had no chance of signing Justin Masterson or Asdrubal Cabrera, as both will be free agents at the end of the season without breaking the bank.

-Thanks to the bullpen, the Indians lost to the Mariners 6-5. The game had a total of 21 hits through the 9 inning game. Zack McAllister was only able to go 3.1 innings with Bryan Shaw getting the loss. This is Shaw's 4th blown save of the season. The bats were hot but the Tribe couldn't start the fire to roast the Mariners. The Texas Rangers arrive today for a 3 game set with Danny Salazar getting the start for the good guys. Jerome Williams will go for the Rangers.

-Appearantly the Tribe was in contact with the Rays for pitcher David Price. It would have cost them Danny Salazar, Carlos Santana and Francisco Lindor. Would you have done it? Hell nah. I'm not gonna sacrifice my future over the right now. It's going to come along Tribe fans. We all want a winner!

-Josh Gordon flew out to New York Wednesday night and met with his lawyers Thursday to prepare for his appeal on a fail/missed/second hand smoke drug screening which will happen today. The results of his appeal won't be known until at least Wednesday or Thursday according to my sources. But sources did state to me, it will happen before the Browns first preseason game next Saturday. Roger Goodell will NOT be involved in the hearing and has appointed special counsel. From what I'm told, it's 50/50 on what will happen to Gordon. I should learn more info Friday night.

-Johnny Manziel vs Brian Hoyer is closer than what some may think. Manziel was a beast in goal line offense, while Hoyer was great in the middle of the field. Rumor has it, the Browns will run a college style offense depending on the personal and situation on the field. Packages have been installed for Manziel and Hoyer to take advantage of the defensive situations. Hoyer has the leadership but Manziel has the intangibles. Yes Cleveland, we have another quarterback battle.

-Besides Kevin Love on his way to Cleveland, I would suspect former Cavs player Mo Williams to come back as well. Just a rumor but don't rule it out!

-The USA Today Coaches Poll was released yesterday and where do you think the Ohio State Buckeyes ranked? After finishing 12-2 last year and 8-0 in the B1G Ten, the Buckeyes emerged 6th in the country and the favorite to win the Big Ten. Michigan State finished 8th. With Ohio State looking for a Big Ten title and a National Championship this year, the Buckeyes will continue to build to success for now and well into the future.
