This Week In The Show 5.11.16 #MLB

As the Baseball season is entering the middle of its second month, my prediction from last month is starting to come to fruition.  When we saw a lot of unexpected things go down in the first month, like the emergence of Trevor Story and the upside down standings we currently have, we should’ve known more craziness would ensue in the month of May.  Well it hasn’t disappointed us and once again we’re going to go over some of those big stories around the MLB the past few weeks.  Once again I’ll talk about the topic and break down what I think about the situation.

Looming PED suspensions- According to multiple reports about a week ago, the MLB will be handing down multiple suspensions for PED usage.  That started with the suspension of Miami star SS Dee Gordon and as of Tuesday now included Kansas City Royals top prospect SS Raul Mondesi Jr.  It seems there’s either a lack of understanding what substances are on the list of banned substances or players are trying more than in previous years to use those substances.

My thoughts- Supposedly the Mondesi Jr. was suspended for some over-the-counter drug that he used that contained the substance.  First off that’s ridiculous, you can’t buy certain over the counter drugs?  I mean if Mondesi could get a doctor’s note or something his suspension should be gone.  I get a bad feeling the future announced suspensions will be for the same reasons.  Players and ball clubs don’t communicate to each the drugs they use and what is in them.

The Hollywood Injury Bug- The Los Angeles Angels were supposed to be a team that had enough offense and pitching to at least make a run at the postseason.  Suddenly the Angels have lost SPs Garrett Richards and Andrew Heaney.  Then their prized trade acquisition SS Andrelton Simmons tore the UCL in his left thumb and is out for the year.  This has started crazy rumors of potential Mike Trout trades.

My thoughts- Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the worst run organization in Baseball, the Los Angeles Angels!  The Angels traded their Top 2 prospects for Simmons and were relying on Heaney and Richards to lead the rotation.  This is a wake up call Angels fans, TIME TO REBUILD.  I would trade Mike Trout, but I’d put OF Kole Calhoun, 1B CJ Cron, and even 1B Albert Pujols on the market to rebuild that farm system which has nothing in it.

The Tale of The Windy City- We all knew the Cubs would be a special team this year, but who saw the White Sox getting off to a hot start.  A big part of this has been the acquisition of 3B Todd Frazier who was a perfect fit to bat behind Jose Abreu and to also hit in Chicago’s hitter-friendly US Cellular Park.  What’s been more impressive is the 1-2-3 combo at the top of the rotation with Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, and Mat Latos.  Add Chris Rondon and a shutdown closer in David Robertson, the White Sox may be a contender this year.

My thoughts- The White Sox are for real.  Jose Abreu hasn’t hit his stride yet, and Chris Sale will keep his pace up and win the Cy Young.  The big question is can the White Sox rotation keep this up for a full season?  Latos has been known to be erratic, Quintana is a solid but not a great pitcher, and Rondon hasn’t hit his stride yet in the bigs.  Things will have to continue to go their way, but they’re off to a good start.

Strasburg is off the Market- In a stunning move, the Washington Nationals locked up Stephen Strasburg to a 7 year, $175 million contract.  In his 7 year career, Strasburg has amassed a 59-37 record with a 3.07 ERA and 959 Ks.  Washington now locks up the dynamic duo of Strasburg and Scherzer together for the next few years.  The next step for Washington will be to try to lock up OF Bryce Harper to a long term deal before he hits the market in the next couple of years.

My thoughts- This certainly makes the Trade market this year that much more interesting because Strasburg was the prized Free Agent this coming offseason.  After him the best FA SP probably will be either Rich Hill or Scott Kazmir, so there’s a significant drop in talent now in the FA market later this year.  Expect potential pitching trade targets to have a significant jump in value.  Bold prediction, this signing leads to the trade of Marlins SP Jose Fernandez.


Well we’re only in the middle of May and we can see this Baseball season is only getting crazier every month.  Now that the NFL Draft season is over, you can be sure all the biggest breaking news stories in the MLB will be discussed along with other big Indians stories will be posted here on TripleThreatCLE.  So enjoy the baseball season and more importantly the warm weather we have ahead.

Tribe Talk 9.1.15: Not So Fast… Indians Season is Far From Done #Indians

Tom Hamilton calls it the, "6 Month Journey, that is Baseball's season" for a reason.  It seems like only yesterday the Indians were starting the season with such high hopes and ended up getting swept by the Tigers in their first Home series.  It's led to a season of change.  The Indians have gone from change from the leadership in the clubhouse (Swisher and Bourn to Kipnis, Brantley and Kluber) and now leadership change in the Front Office with Mark Shapiro leaving.  The Indians headed into Monday's series with the red hot Toronto Blue Jays at 63-66, only 5 GB of the Wild Card.  A month ago I think almost all the fans would've quit on this team, suddenly the Indians sweep their home stand against Milwaukee and the Angels.  Now suddenly the season has taken a turn nobody saw coming.  The 2nd Wild Card now doesn't seem that much of a farfetched possibility.

Now as an Indians fan you're probably thinking that it's a long shot and you're probably right, but I think it's fair to examine, what kind of a chance do the Indians really have?  In my personal opinion, there isn't a team that's currently ahead of us that I'm particularly scared of.  In the last month of the year, after the Blue Jays series, the Indians will have ONE non-in division series until the final series of the year against the Red Sox.  The Indians will have 7 games vs. Detroit, 6 vs. Chicago, 7, 7 vs. Kansas City, and 7 vs. Minnesota.  As crucial as the Blue Jays series could be for establishing momentum, from a schedule standpoint, as long as the Indians can start September on the right note, the Tigers series from the 10th-13th will define the season.  The Indians biggest obstacle has been winning big series at home, especially vs. Detroit.  If the Indians can start off well and win that series, I think the Tribe can seriously make a run for the 2nd Wild Card spot.  The reason why?  Think about it, the teams in front of the Tribe really don't have the pitching staff that the Indians have and for the most part, the critical parts of the offense haven't been hitting like they should and some are coming around at the right time.  So let's examine the other teams the Indians will be watching the scoreboard for in September.

Baltimore Orioles- Lets be honest the Orioles offense really has the potential to score at will whenever it wants.  With Chris Davis, Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, and young budding star Manny Machado, the Orioles can score with any team.  As for their pitching staff...well that's the problem.  When you are lead by Chris Tillman, Kevin Gausman, and Ubaldo Jimenez, you know you have serious problems long term wise.  While they have the bullpen to back it up, in September it's crucial for teams to have your starters last in games to rest up that bullpen.  I think their hopes are over and compared to the Indians, I'd give the Indians an edge.

Tampa Bay Rays- This one doesn't need a lot of explanation in my opinion.  The Rays have done nothing short of a masterful job rebuilding their team and are still in the hunt with 1st year manager Kevin Cash.  With Chris Archer leading the way, the Rays have an ace that can carry them.  My problem is with the bullpen and offense.  I see way too many holes all around compared to where the Indians struggles in offense lay in players having down seasons and not getting hot.  That's why I'm not afraid of Tampa.

Los Angeles Angels- Indians swept them...do I really need to explain why?  Mike Trout alone only gets you so far.  The money wasted on a mediocre rotation has really made the Angels suffer.  Doesn't help their farm system is so bad they can't trade for an ace.  But at least they got some young arms to build around for 2016.

Minnesota Twins- This is the only one I'm still blown away by that they're still in it.  Their offense is really average, and their rotation has veteran arms, but no ace.  I'll give them this, they got one hell of a closer.  But the Twins I thought would fall apart at this point, but they've stayed on track to be in it.  Something has to give and those 7 games the Twins will face with the Indians will decide who takes the 2nd place spot in the division behind the Royals.  I think the way the Indians have played them recently gives me hope they'll do fine against them and take care of business.

Texas Rangers- This is the another team that perplexes me.  Without a doubt they have enough offense to gives teams a headache to deal with and do have an ace with Cole Hamels.  With an offense lead by Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre and a rejuvenated Josh Hamilton.  The big plus with Texas down the stretch is that although they mostly play their division, they have a good amount of games with the Mariners and A's left.  They have 7 vs. the Astros and funny enough right at the perfect moment for the Indians to strike.  As said earlier I'm focusing on the 4 game home series vs. Detroit, the Rangers series vs. Astros begins that next Monday.  If the Indians can continue to scratch and claw their way up the Wild Card, that will be the moment the Indians can strike.

All I ask of fans is to look at the teams ahead of you...you can't tell me that the Indians aren't better that much worse than these teams?  Hell I'd argue the Tribe might be better than these teams.  This is a team that for the past 2 years have shown, they know how to play in September, it's time to show it guys.  A lot of Indians fans threw in the towel, I admit I was extremely close to doing it.  But in the words of Lee Corso, "NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND!"  This season a FAR from over.  So Tribe fans, please keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times because the Roller Coaster we're going on is going to be one wild ride!

- Josh McCown visited the Browns Tuesday & Wednesday. But before we get to excited about signing McCown, he also visited with Bills last week and met Bears & Jets at combine. However Josh McCown will make his decision on a team possibly in a few days. The Browns are in the running. And he wants  to talk things over with family. It sounds as if the Browns have offered him a contract.

He would be a good transition quarterback for the Browns as they prepare their future signal caller whomever that maybe. Even though I would rather have Sam Bradford who the Rams maybe be willing to part with for a 3rd round pick or future conditional 1st or 2nd round pick depending on Bradford's play and health. But the Browns will need to find out the punishment that he NFL will issue for "TextGate" before they can even dip their feet into those waters.

- Looks like the quarterback situation is going to get interesting, per Pro Football Talk the Browns Ray Farmer & Brian Hoyer are set to meet. It's a safe assumption they will be talking about the "TextGate" situation and both sides will determine where to go from there.

- The Browns are also rumored to be interested in Buccaneers free agent DE Adrian Clayborn. He's had 13 sacks in 4 years in the NFL but was hurt in 2012 and 2014. His rookie year in 2011 he has 7.5 sacks and started all 16 games. Most recently in 2013 he has 5.5 sacks and 16 games started. He suffered a torn bicep cost him his 2014 season. Despite his two season ending injuries Clayborn has produced on the field. Cleveland needs help on the defensive line and would be ready to play right away rather than sit like a rookie would.

- NFL sources have indicated that free agent wide receiver Cecil Shorts and the Browns have mutual interest with each other. Shorts would provide a big target as he is 6'0, 200lbs and would allow Andrew Hawkins and/or Miles Austin to play their natural slot position.

- Sources close to Browns tight end Jordan Cameron have said he is not interested in resigning with the team and will test the free agent market.

- The Packers released LB AJ Hawk, their 2006 first-round pick. It saves them $3.5M this year, which comes off their cap.  He ranks No. 1 in franchise history with 1,118 tackles.

- The Detroit Lions have parted ways with RB Reggie Bush.  

- Bulls announce Derrick Rose will undergo surgery after an MRI revealed medial meniscus tear in right knee and will be out indefinitely. The Bulls have paid Derrick Rose $944,608 for each game he has played in over the last 3 seasons (56 games).

- LeBron James set the all-time NBA record for assists by a forward, with 6,136 passing Scottie Pippen (6,135).

- Kendrick Perkins officially signed with the Cavs Tuesday, his Cleveland salary will be $443.068 for the remainder of the season with a salary-cap number of $279,975.

- Chicago Blackhawks superstar Patrick Kane is expected to miss 12 weeks after undergoing surgery of his left clavicle. The Florida Panthers' Alex Petrovic cross checked Kane in the lower back which led Kane to be slammed into the boards, causing the fracture. The regular season ends April 11, with the playoffs starting a week later. Kane would be expected to miss the start of the playoffs with hope that he could return in the Western Conference finals, should Chicago reach that far.

- Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton could be facing some discipline from Major League Baseball after revealing that he's had a drug related relapse which may have included but not limited to cocaine use. Hamiltion is currently undergoing rehab after his shoulder surgery earlier this month and is expected out until at least May. That could change now, obviously. Hamilton signed a 5-year, $125 million deal with the Angels before the 2013 season.

- Former St. Louis Ram Michael Sam and Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin have joined the cast of the new season of Dancing With The Stars.

- The city of Inglewood, CA has approved the "Hollywood Park" stadium plan project to build a Los Angeles based NFL stadium for the St. Louis Rams. The unanimously approved project would build a $1.86 billion, 80,000 seat stadium adjacent to the multi-use redevelopment at the old Hollywood Park racetrack. Workers could potentially start building by the end of 2015.

-UPSET CITY! Last night, the Arizona Wildcats went up to Eugene, Oregon and shocked the No. 2 Oregon Ducks, 31-24. The Wildcats were 24-point underdogs. Arizona freshman running back Nick Wilson had 2 touchdowns to go along with 92 yards, while quarterback Anu Solomon went 20/31 for 287 yards and 1 TD. Heisman hopeful and potential top-5 NFL draft pick Marcus Mariota threw for 276 yards and had 2 passing touchdowns. Personally, I don't think the loss will hurt Mariota's draft status at all. The win puts Arizona at 5-0 and 2-0 in the Pac-12. The Ducks are now 4-1 and possibly may have seen their hopes of a National Championship fade away. But there is plenty of games to go, and you never know what kind of craziness the college football season could bring.

-The Green Bay Packers just flat out bullied the Minnesota Vikings 42-10 last night in Green Bay. "Best quarterback in the NFL" Aaron Rodgers had an easy night, going 12 for 17, for 156 yards and 3 touchdowns. Eddie Lacy showed up big with a season high 105 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Christian Ponder got the start for the Vikings with Teddy Bridgewater being out with a sprained left ankle. Things didn't go well for him at all. Ponder had a 6-yard touchdown run and threw for 222 yards, but had 0 passing touchdowns, 2 interceptions and took 6 sacks. The Packers Julius Peppers become the NFL's first player ever to record 100 sacks and 10 interceptions in the game. Next week, the Vikings will host the Detroit Lions while the Packers will head to Miami to play the Dolphins.

-The NFL has announced that the 2015 NFL Draft will be held in Chicago from April 30 to May 2. This will be the first time the draft has been in Chicago since 1964.

-Speaking of records, the Baltimore Orioles laid a beat down on the Detroit Tigers 12-3 in Game 1 of the ALDS. The 12 runs set a postseason team record for the O's. The game was quite close in the top of the 8th inning when Orioles led 4-3, before exploding for 8 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Max Scherzer took the loss for the Tigers after going 7.1 innings with 5 earned runs. Game 2 is this afternoon at 12:07 on TBS.

-The new "America's Team", Kansas City Royals, pulled out another late inning miracle in Game 1 of their ALDS series, besting the LA Angels 3-2 in the 11th. Mike Moustakas sent a high shot into right field in the top of the 11th before reliever Greg Holland came in to get the save. Danny Duffy picked up the win for the Royals after pitching the 10th. Jered Weaver went 7 innings for the Angels giving up 2 earned with 6 strikeouts. It should also be noted that Angels superstars Mike Trout and Albert Pujols both went 0-4 with 1 walk apiece. Game 2 of the series is tonight at 9:30.

-LeBron James will be bring TWO shows to TV this month. "Becoming" debuts on Disney XD October 26 and will chronicle athletes lives before they were the stars people know and love today. The other show "Survivor's Remorse" will debut on STARZ this Saturday. "Survivor's Remorse" focuses on fictional basketball star Cam Calloway and his life with friends and family while handling success and fame. James and his business partner and friend Maverick Carter are producers.

-Opening in theaters today are the horror movie "Annabelle" and Ben Affleck's thriller mystery, "Gone Girl". Will these movies push "The Equalizer", "The Maze Runner" and "The Boxtrolls' down to 3-5? I believe so. Go check out some movies this weekend.

-The Baltimore Ravens terminated running back Ray Rice's contract on Monday. The NFL also suspended Rice indefinitely. All of this was due to the release of a TMZ Sports video that shed more light on the domestic violence that occurred between Rice and then fiancee, now wife Janay Palmer in February 2014. While each hit the other, there really isn't ANY reason for that man or any man to throw a punch into a woman's face, body or anything.

The Ravens and the NFL reacted "swiftly" due to the release of the video and warranted outrage from it on Monday morning. Rice, if you remember, was initially suspended 2 games on July 24. Rice, 27, was charged with felony aggravated assault in the case, but in May was put into a pretrial intervention program that let him avoid jail time.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after seeing the video for the first time on Monday, "It changed things" and "It made things a little bit different".

Another interesting note, is that the NFL and Roger Goddell said that they also did not see this video until yesterday. BUT, if they did, and Goddell did, and still only issued a 2 game suspension, this could very well lead to the ouster or resignation of Commissioner Roger Goddell.

-The NFL Players Association is set to vote on a new drug policy later today. The vote will consist of the 32 player representatives of each team deciding whether or not to approve human growth hormone (HGH) testing for the first time ever and make significant changes to the testing for marijuana and expand neutral arbitration. Why should Browns fans be interested? If a new policy is agreed upon, suspended WR Josh Gordon could be reinstated and play THIS season for the team. Under the new revised policy, Gordon would not have been suspended. The same could be said for Broncos WR Wes Welker. Fingers crossed...

-Our very own @MarkW2112 found out late last night that Browns running back Ben Tate's injury suffered in last week's Steelers game was "nothing that serious".

-2014 first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney underwent arthoscopic surgery Monday on his right knee. Clowney is expected to miss 4-6 weeks for the Houston Texans. Definitely not the rookie season anyone envisioned for him.

-Indianapolis Colts pass rusher Robert Mathis has been lost for the season due to a torn Achilles tendon. Mathis is currently serving a suspension for a performance enhancing drug violation, suffered the injury last week while working out.

-Well, I guess 'Happy Valley' is happy again. Monday the NCAA decided to remove the sanctions put onto Penn State in 2012 from the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The NCAA Executive Committee eliminated the postseason ban, effective immediately and returned the full amount of available scholarships in 2015-16 to the school. Looks like Penn State will be in a bowl game this winter, IF they are good enough.

-Sometimes, you just wish you didn't have to do games like yesterday's make up game. The Angels came into Cleveland for a make up Monday afternoon and put the wood to the Cleveland Indians, 12-3. Danny Salazar got shelled for 8 hits, 2 walks and 6 earned runs, including 2 home runs, in just 4.2 innings. Jered Weaver picked up the win for the Angels. Not much you can really say about a 12-3 pounding. Just one of those games you have to try to forget ever happened and get ready for the next game. That next game is tonight at 7 PM against the Minnesota Twins. Trevor Bauer is expected to get the start for the Tribe.

-Major League Baseball announced that the 2015 season schedule will begin on April 5, 2015 and end the regular season on October 4, 2015. Now if you put two and two together, that means playoff baseball will stretch into the month of November, possibly as late as November 5 if the World Series were to get to a seventh game.

-Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 6 later today at their special event.

-In box office news, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" is at number 1 again, raking in $10.1 million over the weekend. The comic based action comedy has now made $294 million domestic and $586 million globally. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" held tight to the number 2 slot, adding $6.5 million to its $300 million worldwide tally. Rounding out the top 5 were "If I Stay" with $5.7 million, "Let's Be Cops" with $5.4 million and "The November Man" with $4.2 million. The Idris Elba thriller "No Good Deed" opens this Friday.

-Finally, quite possibly the biggest video game of 2014 is out today! Bungie and Activision's "mythic science fiction", first-person shooter/roleplaying game "Destiny" is out on Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. There is also a new all white Playstation 4 bundle that includes Destiny available today. Check out more about Destiny here on the game website.
