Browns Preview 12/8/17: Green Bay Packers @ Cleveland Browns

The 6-6, Aaron Rodgers-less Green Bay Packers travel to Cleveland this week to take on the 0-12 Browns. If at the beginning of the season someone told you the Packers would be 6-6, the Browns were winless but still had a chance no one would have believed you. Its also been a fun Thursday as a Browns fan, Sashi Brown was fired and Hue Jackson will remain the Head Coach in 2018. *insert Mike Polk "Fun times in Cleveland Again". But on to actual game...

Browns Offense vs Packers Defense

I know this is crazy to say but the Browns might be able to put up some points against the Packers defense. Their passing defense isn't that good, and DeShone Kizer could actually throw an accurate pass to Josh Gordon we could see Gordon go for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Again, I know it sounds nuts, but what Gordon did last week against Casey Hayward isn't really anything to take lightly. The guy shut down all the other top receivers he's gone up against this year and is ranked as the top cornerback this year. Gordon against a struggling Packers secondary screams Kizer's first 300 yard game.

The running game needs to keep on keeping on. And that means Isaiah Crowell, Duke Johnson, and DeShone Kizer. Last week they had just under 100 yards against a really tough defense in the Chargers. Now the Packers run defense is better than their pass defense because of Mike Daniels and Blake Martinez. If the Browns can get a lead and use the run game to win the time of possession it could be a recipe for success.

Browns Defense vs Packers Offense

The Packers will have to start Brett Hundley for one more week. With the help of two defensive touchdowns last week the Packers beat the Buccaneers 26-20 in overtime. In that game Hundley threw for 84 yards and threw one pick. Its fairly obvious that Green Bay misses Rodgers. The key for the Browns this game is to let Hundley beat you with his arm. He's thrown for only five touchdowns in the eight games he's played. And he's also prone to turnovers, throwing eight picks and fumbling three times.

The Browns should key in on stopping the run this week. The Packers have a running back by committee with Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones as their leading rushers. The Browns also can't forget about Hundley scrambling out of the pocket. He has good speed and ran for 66 yards last week in the overtime win.

Five Guys To Watch

1. Josh Gordon: In his first game in almost three seasons Gordon went for four catches for 85 yards. He also went up against the best corner in the league. It should be exciting to see how he plays against a struggling secondary.

2. DeShone Kizer: If it weren't for Kizer the Browns probably would have won last week. Multiple terrible throws to a wide open Josh Gordon and a sack-fumble in the redzone. That's exactly why we lost. But Sunday is another chance to redeem himself.

3. David Njoku: Njoku had a career game last week. Four catches for 74 yards and a touchdown. Hopefully this means we get to see Njoku on the field more.

4. Joe Schobert: In a game where the Browns need to stop the run Schobert seems like an obvious pick for a guy to watch.

5. Hue Jackson: Let's be 100%...Hue Jackson won the power struggle against Sashi Brown. And with that he has security for 2018. I'm curious if Jackson starts to change up his playcalling knowing his job is safe going forward. I expect him to go into his bag of tricks this week and have a good game overall.

I know, I'm crazy for picking the Browns but with everything that's happened this week it seems like a game the Browns could accidentally win...the stars are lining up. The Packers are struggling on defense, they don't have Aaron Rodgers, and the Browns have Josh Gordon and a head coach who really doesn't have any pressure on him to win a game since 2018 is already guaranteed.

The NFL has been a crazy place the past few days. When the new league year began and number of players got paid big time, while others over-estimated their value. This article is just a recap of the "notable transactions" new league year after the first weekend.

NFL Championship Weekend Recap: The Super Bowl Is Set

NFC Championship Game: Atlanta Falcons 44 Green Bay Packers 21

The Falcons clinch the NFC Championship for the second time in team history. The first was in 1998-1999 season when they defeated the Vikings 30-27.

This game was over at half time when the Falcons had a 24-0 lead. The Falcons completely dominated the Packers. Matt Ryan threw for 392 yards and five total touchdowns (four through the air and one on the ground). Julio Jones caught nine passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. The Falcons' offense scored on 7/9 of their drives (six touchdowns). In total they completely dominated the Packers. The Falcons out-gained the Packers 493-367, won the time of possession 33:39-26:21, and converted 10/13 third down attempts compared to the Packers who only went 4/10.

The Packers shot themselves in the foot early in this game. After giving up a touchdown to start the game, the Packers drove down field and ended up missing a 41-yard field goal. In their next drive (down 10-0), the Packers ended up fumbling the ball while in the redzone. Aaron Rodgers had a really good game, throwing for 287 yards, three touchdowns and a pick. But Rodgers felt pressure constantly, getting hit seven times (two sacks) and having seven of his passes deflected.

It seemed liked the Packers ran out of gas. They had multiple wideouts playing hurt, they suffered two offensive linemen injuries, and a number of injuries on the defensive side of the ball. But the Falcons took advantage of it and good for them. With this game Matt Ryan solidifies himself as one of the elite quarterback in this league.

AFC Championship Game: New England Patriots 36 Pittsburgh Steelers 17

Another blowout in these playoffs which results in New England winning the AFC championship for the 9th time in team history (7th with Brady at QB). The Patriots seemed to be in control on offense from the first snap. They drove down the field on the first drive of the game, and if not for a drop on 3rd and 1 the Patriots were deemed to get a touchdown. The score of the first half was a bit misleading 17-9 Patriots. The Steelers had problems getting to Tom Brady which resulted in numerous breakdowns in their coverage.

Brady picked the Steelers apart, throwing for 384 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Hogan caught nine passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns and Julian Edelman caught eight passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. It was total domination on offense for the Patriots. And on defense they forced two turnovers and held the Steelers offense to only 368 total yards.

The Steelers offense struggled after the first quarter when Le'Veon Bell exited the game with a hamstring injury and wasn't able to return. The Steelers had to rely on their passing offense. Big Ben threw for 314 yards on 31/47 attempts and their leading receivers were Antonio Brown with seven catches for 77 yards, Eli Rodgers with seven catches for 66 yards and Deangelo Williams also had seven catches but only for 51 yards. The Steelers only averaged 6.7 yards per passing attempt compared to the Patriots who averaged 9.1 yards per passing attempt.

The Patriots show once again they are the class of the AFC and the NFL. This is the seventh time Brady and Belichick will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Both are arguably the greatest player/coach in NFL history and the best duo in league history.

Super Bowl LI is going to be an awesome matchup. Its really not just two great team matching up but two of the NFL's top quarterbacks and two of the best offensive play callers in the game. So naturally this Super Bowl is going to be a low scoring game, right? Whether it is or isn't this game should be entertaining or lets hope it is because the playoffs leading up to it really hasn't been.

Krunch Time With Katelin: Browns v. Packers Preseason Thoughts

This article is going to be an informal one, while I just list off a bunch of thoughts I had after watching the Browns' first preseason game under new Head Coach Hue Jackson.

My First thought is, oh my god... Barkevious Mingo is terrible. He was on the field for 1/3 of the defensive snaps and he didn't have a single tackle. He also got juked out by an undrafted Free Agent QB while trying for a sack. I'm extremely glad the Browns: A. Didn't pick up his option for next year. B. Drafted three different pass rushers who will likely take his place.

Another down is Cam Erving. Now I don't know what his pass protection responsibilities are and frankly I don't give a damn. He had a rough time protecting Robert Griffin III. And looking back on the throw to Terrelle Pryor, if Cam helps out right guard John Greco... Griffin might be able to hit Pryor in stride for a Touchdown.

But Speaking about Terrelle Pryor...my goodness he looks like a NFL Wide Receiver. Catching a few balls thrown from RG3. He worked back to the ball extremely well, and on the 50 yard catch he demonstrated he has strong hands to be able to make a diving catch.

Another Positive are the rookies. Besides Joe Schobert and Cody Kessler, I didn't see any major mistakes. Carl Nassib, Emmanual Ogbuh, Scooby Wright, and Tracy Howard all played really well. Nassib and Ogbuh did a good job rushing the QB and running after guys down field. Wright seems to have a nose for the football. He was in just about every play he was on the field for. And Howard did a good job in coverage.

Austin Davis was a down. Yes I understand he is got hurt and is our third string QB but if the Browns are looking to trade Josh McCown we need a solid backup. I hope Kessler won't have to play this year which is why Davis looking good was an underrated thing to watch out for. He didn't play well which is why its a down.

Another up was Alvin Bailey. He played right guard with the second and third team. He did really well. He was the sweep blocker when Raheem Mostert broke a nice 15+ yard run. Also Bailey is a veteran even at 24 years old. He was a starter on the Seattle when they went to back-to-back Super Bowls. He is battling for the starting right tackle position/backup guard.

My last thought was on RG3 and I'm still not sure how I feel about him. He looked very well in the pocket, and he was ok after taking a few hits. The interception wasn't his fault in my opinion. Gary Barnidge should have ran a post route splitting the the two safeties instead of running the streak. RG3 had the one bad throw to Taylor Gabriel which wasn't a catchable ball anyways but still. RG3 was good in his first game with the Browns but I'd still want to see him play more especially with guys like Josh Gordon, Andrew Hawkins, and Corey Coleman so I can give a honest assessment of Robert Griffin III.

- The Ohio State Buckeyes football team has been voted the unanimous number one team in the preseason Associated Press’ Top 25 poll after receiving 61 first place votes. The only thing that's not unanimous right now is who the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes will be, Cardale Jones or J.T. Barrett.

Michigan State is ranked No. 5 in the AP preseason poll. This is the Spartans' highest ranking in the Associated Press’ preseason poll since starting No. 3 in 1967.

- After opting out of his $6.4M player option for the 2015 season, J.R. Smith announced, via Instagram that he and the Cavaliers have agreed on a 2-year, $10M deal, with a player option in the second year. The deal also includes a no-trade clause. After this deal was announced Thursday, it makes me think Smith wasn’t too crazy for opting out of his original deal. I mean, he did secure himself $5M for the 2016 season.

- The Cavs also signed European center Sasha Kaun to a 2-year contract. The Cavs have held Kaun's rights since the 2008 season before he elected to play overseas. He averaged 9.9 points per game and 4.5 rebounds. He has been labeled as a hard nose enforcer in the paint, who will provide a physical presence. As I looked at video from the Russian Olympic team, which Kaun was apart of, he will not be afraid to use every single foul available to him to help his team secure a win.

- Aaron Rodgers will be missing his number one receiver this year. In a preseason game yesterday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jordy Nelson suffered a knee injury. After Green Bay’s doctors perform their tests, it will likely be announced that Nelson is out for the season with a torn ACL.

- On the story that came out Sunday, of Cris Carter saying some controversial comments to rookies, here's what I think. In my opinion, the NFL and ESPN should be ashamed of themselves. We all know the NFL and ESPN are in bed with each other. But don't say you disagree with what Cris Carter said over a year ago. Maybe what he said is an unwritten rule. In baseball, you hit my star player, I hit your star player. To me, the league and ESPN need to get off of their moral high horse and just keep it real.

The "Fall Guy" isn't expected to take a murder case for someone. Everyone knows what Cris Carter said was the absolute truth on how it works in the NFL. NFL players don't live in a reality world, but to the common man, like you and I, it might seem like a fantasy. But for me, what Carter said was the truth. I know the NFL is a business and they have to keep their sponsors happy. But don't treat me like I live under a rock and distance yourselves away from Carter for comments he made over a year ago! Why not distance yourself away from Warren Sapp? Did you push Adrian Peterson away? How about Aldon Smith? Ray Lewis? But Josh Gordon can’t even be in the team facility to workout for a drug test he barely failed based upon the current testing criteria.The NFL has never admitted guilt in any of their wrong doings but they love to push players to the side and let them sink or swim on their own.

Hey NFL and ESPN, just admit what really happens in the secret lives of athletes. It would make excellent reality TV.
