NFL Championship Weekend Recap: The Super Bowl Is Set

NFC Championship Game: Atlanta Falcons 44 Green Bay Packers 21

The Falcons clinch the NFC Championship for the second time in team history. The first was in 1998-1999 season when they defeated the Vikings 30-27.

This game was over at half time when the Falcons had a 24-0 lead. The Falcons completely dominated the Packers. Matt Ryan threw for 392 yards and five total touchdowns (four through the air and one on the ground). Julio Jones caught nine passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. The Falcons' offense scored on 7/9 of their drives (six touchdowns). In total they completely dominated the Packers. The Falcons out-gained the Packers 493-367, won the time of possession 33:39-26:21, and converted 10/13 third down attempts compared to the Packers who only went 4/10.

The Packers shot themselves in the foot early in this game. After giving up a touchdown to start the game, the Packers drove down field and ended up missing a 41-yard field goal. In their next drive (down 10-0), the Packers ended up fumbling the ball while in the redzone. Aaron Rodgers had a really good game, throwing for 287 yards, three touchdowns and a pick. But Rodgers felt pressure constantly, getting hit seven times (two sacks) and having seven of his passes deflected.

It seemed liked the Packers ran out of gas. They had multiple wideouts playing hurt, they suffered two offensive linemen injuries, and a number of injuries on the defensive side of the ball. But the Falcons took advantage of it and good for them. With this game Matt Ryan solidifies himself as one of the elite quarterback in this league.









AFC Championship Game: New England Patriots 36 Pittsburgh Steelers 17

Another blowout in these playoffs which results in New England winning the AFC championship for the 9th time in team history (7th with Brady at QB). The Patriots seemed to be in control on offense from the first snap. They drove down the field on the first drive of the game, and if not for a drop on 3rd and 1 the Patriots were deemed to get a touchdown. The score of the first half was a bit misleading 17-9 Patriots. The Steelers had problems getting to Tom Brady which resulted in numerous breakdowns in their coverage.

Brady picked the Steelers apart, throwing for 384 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Hogan caught nine passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns and Julian Edelman caught eight passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. It was total domination on offense for the Patriots. And on defense they forced two turnovers and held the Steelers offense to only 368 total yards.

The Steelers offense struggled after the first quarter when Le'Veon Bell exited the game with a hamstring injury and wasn't able to return. The Steelers had to rely on their passing offense. Big Ben threw for 314 yards on 31/47 attempts and their leading receivers were Antonio Brown with seven catches for 77 yards, Eli Rodgers with seven catches for 66 yards and Deangelo Williams also had seven catches but only for 51 yards. The Steelers only averaged 6.7 yards per passing attempt compared to the Patriots who averaged 9.1 yards per passing attempt.

The Patriots show once again they are the class of the AFC and the NFL. This is the seventh time Brady and Belichick will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Both are arguably the greatest player/coach in NFL history and the best duo in league history.

Super Bowl LI is going to be an awesome matchup. Its really not just two great team matching up but two of the NFL's top quarterbacks and two of the best offensive play callers in the game. So naturally this Super Bowl is going to be a low scoring game, right? Whether it is or isn't this game should be entertaining or lets hope it is because the playoffs leading up to it really hasn't been.

On The Mark 10.10.16: New England Patriots @ Cleveland Browns Recap

Guess who's back?  The Patriots dismantle the Browns 33-13 as Tom Brady returns from suspension

Today was the day many in the NFL waited for, the return of the New England Patriots Tom Brady from his 4 game suspension for his part in "Deflategate" 2 years ago with their Super Bowl win.  And, like clockwork, Brady stepped in like he never left, destroying the Cleveland Browns defense on it's way to a decisive 33-13 win.  The Browns were never any match for the Patriots either on offense or defense.

Brady finished the game 28-of-40 for 406 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He made it look effortless against a Browns defense that stood no chance.  He threw to 7 different receivers, including Martellus Bennett who caught all 3 of Brady's touchdowns.  Chris Hogan and Rob Gronkowski both had over 100 yards rushing with Gronk setting up the first touchdown of the day by shedding blockers like they were paper dolls.  

As for the Browns, it was a step backwards against the mighty Patriots.  Cody Kessler had a good start, going 5-of-8 for 62 yards with a touchdown to Andrew Hawkins.  However, Kessler would leave the game with neck and chest pain after a blown call led to a crushing sack, making Kessler lose the ball which then went out of bounds in the end zone for a safety.  Bring in Charlie Whitehurst, just signed a few weeks ago, who would lead the Browns to a late game touchdown but wasn't very effective.  He did go for 14-of-24 for 182 yards and that touchdown and an interception Near the end of the game, Whitehurst was hurt which led to Terrelle Pryor to be the third quarterback of the day for a series.

The run game, which had been so good the previous weeks, was shut to a stand still by the Patriots line.  Isaiah Crowell only rushed for 22 yards on 13 carries.

Thoughts: It was a step backwards for the Browns.  The worst part was having 3 quarterbacks in one game due to injuries. Injuries, bad luck and no respect from the referees can be blamed, but the biggest reason why the Browns are so bad is the lack of talent on the roster.  It's going to take years for the Browns to get any kind of respectability.  The long road keeps getting longer though.  

Player of the game: Tom Brady was unstoppable.  

Next up:  the Browns travel to Tennessee to play the Titans next week at 1 PM.

Browns Preview 10.7.16: New England Patriots @ Cleveland Browns

The 3-1 New England Patriots travels to Cleveland to take on the 0-4 Browns. Both teams lost last week. The Patriots lost 16-0 to the Buffalo Bills at home. The Browns lost to the Redskins 31-20 in Washington. This week marks the return of Tom Brady, who was serving a four game suspension for "Deflate Gate".

Browns Offense vs Patriots Defense

The Browns running game is ranked first in the league with 142 yards per game. So we should expect the Browns to continue to run the ball since the Patriots are giving up 100 yards per game on the ground this year. Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson should get 30 carries between the two. The Browns need to control the time of possession. Like last week, the Bills ran for 134 yards on 32 carries but most importantly they controlled the ball for 36 mins.

The passing game with Kessler should continue to do what they do. A lot of slant routes with Terrelle Pryor, check downs passes to Duke Johnson, and find his "ole' reliable" target Gary Barnidge. The Patriots are going to bring presser at times and stack the box, so expect more passes down field. Kessler is getting more comfortable in the NFL and its his first home start of his young career, so Hue Jackson might bring out all the stops to upset the Patriots.

The last key for the Browns to win is to continue to convert on third down. Last week the Browns were 8/12 on third down and they have a 42% conversion percentage this year, which ranks 13th in the NFL. Converting third downs help the time of possession and obviously helps the Browns get into scoring position.

*Note John Greco is the starting center this week, Alvin Bailey is projected to start at right guard this week.


Browns Defense vs Patriots Offense

Tom Brady is back. Rob Gronkowski is close to 100%. And LeGarrette Blount is third in rushing yards just behind Isaiah Crowell.

Tom Brady is a question mark this week. Everyone expects him to throw for 500 yards and 4 touchdowns, but he hasn't played since the preseason. The Browns need to get pressure to Brady and knock him down so he doesn't get into a rhythm early. But Brady has all of his offense weapons this week: Gronk, Julian Edelman, and Martellus Bennett. This might be one of those games where the Browns need to force the Pats to run the ball.

LeGarrette Blount is a top rusher in the NFL and he's also one of the biggest backs in the league. Blount should get a ton of touches so the Pats can ease Brady into the game. Blount is averaging four yards per carry and he has four touchdowns. James White is the pass catching back for the Pats. White has 13 catches this year and is a really good change of pace back to spell Blount.

The Browns need to force the ground game and get pressure to Tom Brady. The Browns are going to have to pick their spots like always because of the youth of the defense.


Five Guys to Watch

Isaiah Crowell: Crowell should get an increase in carries this week. If he can go for at least 80 yards against the Patriots defense, when they know the run is coming, Crowell should be in the discussion as one of the better backs in the league. And like stated before, Crowell's success this week should keep the Browns in this game.

Gary Barnidge: Barnidge has caught 16/18 passes to him this year. This week he should get a ton of targets and have a breakout game this week since the Pats will try to take away the running game and Terrelle Pryor.

Carl Nassib (Hopefully): Nassib was back to practice this week. He is still questionable for this week but if Nassib can play limited snaps he will really help the pass rush with Ogbah and Cam Johnson.

Derrick Kindred: Kindred will be matched up against Gronk or Bennett. It could be a long day for him. But as long as he does his job Kendred shouldn't be exposed to badly this week. This match up personifies the term "tryout year".

Joe Haden: Haden will be up against Edelman this week. Haden has to lock down the lake this week and help force an interception. Haden will be up against not just Edelman but the tight ends too while in the redzone. As the superstar player on defense Haden needs to step up against the elite playmakers of the Patriots.

This game can go either way. But expect the Browns to lose and the Patriots to cover the spread late. The Browns will play well like the first four weeks but they just can't pull it out. Another morale win for the Browns but another frustrating game to watch for the fans...at least the Tribe plays at 4pm.

- Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mo Williams is expected to miss at least two weeks with knee injury according to coach Tyronn Lue. The team will reevaluated after that time period and Williams will continue treatment on his knee. Last week Mo visited orthopedist Dr.James Andrews, who diagnosed Williams with chondramalacia under the knee cap.

- The Toronto Raptors will waive former No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett in order to sign free-agent forward Jason Thompson. The Raptors gave Bennett a chance this season after he bombed out with the Minnesota Timberwolves last year. The Cleveland Cavaliers made the 22-year-old the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, but he had a historically bad rookie season and was sent to Minnesota along with Andrew Wiggins. 

Bennett hasn't been productive for the Raptors, appearing in 19 games and averaging 1.5 points and 1.2 rebounds while shooting just 29.6 percent in 4.4 minutes per game. Anthony Bennett maybe the biggest NBA bust of this decade.

- Former NBA player Michael Beasley was named Foreign Most Valuable Player of the Chinese Basketball Association. Beasley is eligible to be signed by any NBA team and would be playoff-eligible as long as he is signed by the final day of the regular season. He averaged 31.7 points and 13.2 rebounds in his 37 games, with Shandong Golden Stars and they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.   

- NFLPA announced that the 2016 salary cap will be at $155.27 million per team. With that being said here are the official franchise and transition figures:

- Tom Brady and the Patriots agree to a 2 year contract extension,the deal will run through the 2019 season when Brady will be 42 years old. Brady had two years left on his contract, paying him $9 million for 2016 and $10 million for 2017. Immediate details on his 2018 and 2019 are currently unavailable.

- Browns safety Donte Whitner has talked to Tashaun Gipson: "I don't think he's too hopeful he's going to be back" "It would be a blow" if Gipson is gone in free agency.

- The New Orleans Saints released veteran wide receiver Marques Colston Monday with a failed physical designation. Colston, 32, was in the final year of his five-year, $36.3 million contract that included $17.7 million guaranteed. In 2015, Colston appeared in 13 games and caught 45 passes for 520 yards receiving and four touchdowns.

- The Los Angeles Rams are discussing an extension with head coach Jeff Fisher. In his four seasons with the Rams, Fisher’s teams have compiled a 27-36-1 record and have never gone over .500. The Rams finished 7-9 last season which was the third time they’ve won seven games under Fisher.

- Finally, during the halftime of the Clippers game last night, the team unveiled their new mascot: Chuck the Condor. Uhh.... yea.

- The Indians confirmed yesterday that Mark Shapiro will be leaving the organization after 24 years to become President/CEO of the Toronto BlueJays.

Shapiro says at this point, he's not looking to bring anyone with him from the Indians to Toronto. Indians principal owner Larry Dolan also added, "I'm confident Terry Francona will be the manager for the Indians for a long time." Once the season is over, Indians CEO Paul Dolan will seek internal candidates for the job of President of the Indians. Dolan will serve as interim President until the position is filled.

- Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has been named a captain of the 2015 Buckeyes. Joining him are senior H-back Braxton Miller, senior center Jacoby Boren, junior safety Tyvis Powell, senior offensive tackle Taylor Decker and senior linebacker Joshua Perry.

- Long time Buffalo Bills staple, Fred Jackson was cut by the Bills on Monday. Jackson, who has rushed for 5,646 yards in his Bills career, will finish as the Bills’ third-leading rusher all-time, behind Thurman Thomas (11,938) and O.J. Simpson (10,183). The New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns are early front runners to land “Fred-X”.

- Kirk Cousins has been named the week one starter for the Washington Redskins over Robert Griffin III. Jay Gruden says Griffin lost his starting job not because of his injury, but due to Kirk's performance. Griffin's clearance from the concussion is still entirely up to the league protocol and he’ll see his doctor on Friday. It seems that the RG3 and Redskins relationship is nearing an end.

- Over the weekend, the Atlanta Falcons & receiver Julio Jones agreed to a 5-year deal worth $47.5 million guaranteed & $71.25 million over 5 years.

- Ric Bucher, of Bleacher Report, is reporting that Tristan Thompson will only re-sign long-term with the Cavaliers if he is offered a max deal. If no offer materializes, he would take the one-year qualifying offer, which agent Rich Paul has already threatened the Cavaliers with. Per Bucher’s source, Paul believes that he could get Thompson a max deal with the Toronto Raptors in 2016.

- The Browns cut the roster to 84 Monday as the waived WR Shane Wynn and TE Anthony Ezeakunne. The team also terminated the contracts of LB Everette Brown, LB Moise Fokou, RB Jalen Parmale & DB Aaron Ross.

- No settlement has been reached in The Tom Brady/DeflateGate case. The is Judge expected to make decision today or Wednesday. Speculation is he will either stand with the four game suspension, or no at all. An appeal is expected by the losing party.

John Mara was apart of the talks yesterday at the judge's request. Jay Feely, union executive and one of Brady's best friends, was also in attendance. The NFL previously have turned down the judge's request to have Mara in settlement talks. This case conceivably could go to Supreme Court if the parties are not satisfied with the courts ruling. The NFL has never made formal settlement offer, but indicated they were willing to cut the suspension to 3 games if Brady admitted guilt. Brady refused to sign the document admitting any wrongdoing. He was willing to take a fine for not cooperating. If the NFL loses, why appeal and drag this out? Because it doesn't want players going to court whenever they object to discipline.

- Former Browns running back and 2012 NFL Draft 3rd overall pick Trent Richardson was cut by the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders guaranteed Trent Richardson $600,000 this year. The Raiders were Richardson's 3rd team in 4 seasons. Richardson was drafted by the Browns, traded to the Colts and now finally, signed, then released with the Raiders.

- The Cleveland Indians announced that Phase 2 of the Progressive Field renovations will start in October. The renovations include extending the "Right Field District Themes" throughout the ballpark. Which includes adding more local themed restaurants to the district. Also, a new club will be added behind home plate for season ticket holders that will include a full glass front to watch the game, concessions and a customer-service center. The club will stay open after games and provide season ticket holders a place to go while everyone else clears.

- Court was adjourned yesterday in the NFL’s “Deflate-Gate” case, that many see as Roger Goodell vs. Tom Brady and NFLPA, with no resolution.

Judge Richard Berman stated, "I have not made up my mind on which side will prevail”. Judge Berman continues emphasizing hope for a Deflate-Gate settlement.

"Everyone is of a view that this case can be resolved expeditiously." The Judge seemed skeptical of Ted Wells's dual role as lead investigator and attorney hired by the NFL. Berman also added civil cases of this nature typically last 2 years. "I think it’s safe to say nobody here wants to wait that long”, ”I think there are strengths and weaknesses to both sides here”.

So with this all being said its back to the drawing board to reach a settlement between Brady and the NFL. The biggest hang up is that the NFL wants Brady to admit guilt. But Brady can't accept Wells’ report in settlement since his testimony refutes it. The union and Brady's position remains same: A fine, no games suspended and no admission of guilt. Looks like a long road ahead and we will likely see Brady Week 1 versus Pittsburgh.

- One day after breaking Geno Smith's jaw, IK Enemkpali finds himself with the Jets former head coach, Rex Ryan. The Buffalo Bills claimed Enemkpali off of waivers yesterday. Ryan was the Jets' head coach when the team drafted Enemkpali in the sixth round of the 2014 draft. Contract terms are not known at this time.

- The NBA released the Cavaliers regular season schedule last night. The Cavs open the season October 27, on the road against the Chicago Bulls. The home opener will be October 30, as they host the Miami Heat. Cleveland has a league high 34 national televised games, with ten on ESPN, nine on TNT, six on ABC and nine on NBA TV. The Cavs will play 19 back-to-backs during the course of the season and play 4 games in 5 nights, from December 25-29. One of the highlights of the season is the Christmas Day game that will see the Cavs on the road playing the Golden State Warriors, in a rematch of the 2015 NBA Finals.

3 Rivers Rundown 1.24.15: NFL is the National Fraud League

Ok, Roger Goodell enough is enough! It is time to get your League under control. Why is it that this league is always involved in scandals? Here's proof of what I'm talking about, Big Ben rape allegations, Ray Rice domestic violence assault, Adrian Peterson child abuse, Jim Irsay drug possession, Bill Belichick Spygate, the Saints Bounty Gate. Now this Deflategate story. I'm sorry, enough is enough. We want real answers Goodell!

Even though we know the answer, the Patriots are guilty, how did I come to this conclusion. Easy answer Belichick told the equipment people to cater to Brady needs. Everyone knows this, but they are trying to Jedi mind trick us into believing other wise.

Here's my proof.

The equipment manager gives Brady the balls to pick for the game. Then he warms up with these same balls, which are then used in the game. So let's go over all the hands that handles them. Equipment manager, Bryan Stork, Tom Brady, then a Wr, Rb, or Te. So none of these people didn't notice the irregularities in the footballs?

I know for a fact Bryan Stork should've noticed it. Why? He's the damn starting center and he touches it the most. Also, I just love how his name has been omitted. Think folks, Bill Belichick pointed to Brady, Brady pointed to an "I'm a dumb blonde" defense. With a splash of ask the equipment manager because "I'm not aware of the PSI pressure of a football". However, no one and I mean no one has mentioned Bryan Stork's name. Hello! HELLO! Don't you think this is odd? I do! I waited all week before even posting this. ESPN, FOX Sports, Bleacher Report, NFL Network, CNN Sports none of them has brought up this fact. Not even the National Press everyone has failed to mention his name. So do you think this is by accident or by design? I believe it's by design because they are guilty of cheating. People, please question what you've seen and read on this and watch the glaring oversight. Afterwards, question the most glaring thing which is 11 out of 12. This isn't a little mistake it's a failure to follow orders.

How can I write this with such confidence? Easy answer, he put the twelfth ball in the wrong pile before deflating it. That's how you get 11 out of 12.

So watch as Roger Goodell twists in the wind, praying for the Seattle Seahawks win Super Bowl XLIX, just so he can come back later and take a couple of draft picks. Then brag that the league did a complete investigation to remove the picks. But never owning up to the fact that Bill Belicheat  (Thank you Don Shula for the name) was cheating again right under their noses.

- The San Francisco 49ers granted the Browns permission to interview Greg Roman for their open offensive coordinator position. They're scheduled to meet Monday. It seems as if the Browns would like to stay within their current scheme of zone blocking and Roman runs the same type of offense that the Browns currently use. To me, this is also a sign that the Browns would like Johnny Manziel to be the starting quarterback next year. Colin Kaepernick and Roman had success running the read option in San Francisco. Despite the 49ers granting Roman permission to interview with the Browns, there will be some competition for his services. The Rams have also requested permission, and he interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday.

The Browns have also requested to interview Al Saunders & John DeFilippo of the Oakland Raiders and will also interview former Bears head coach Marc Trestman.  
             

- Patriots advance! Tom Brady threw for 367 yards and 3 TD and running for another as New England defeated Baltimore, 35-31. The Pats only rushed for 14 yards as they reach the AFC title game for the 4th straight year. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco threw for 292 and 2 interceptions. New England patiently waits on the winner of the Colts vs Broncos game.                                    

- New England Patriots QB Tom Brady now has the most career postseason passing TD's (46) in the history of the NFL, surpassing Joe Montana.                

- Bill Belichick has tied legendary Cowboys coach Tom Landry for most postseason wins of all-time (20).

- The Seattle Seahawks are one win away from going to their second straight Super Bowl with a 31-17 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Russell Wilson was 15/22 for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns. Cam Newton went 23/36 for 246 and 2 touchdowns in the loss. Jermaine Kearse led all receivers with 129 yards and 1 touchdown. The Seahawks will face the winner of the Dallas vs Green Bay game which will be played today.

- Dick LeBeau resigned as the Steelers defensive coordinator after 11 seasons. In a statement, LeBeau says "Time to go in a different direction." He also stated "I'm resigning, not retiring". Now the question I have is where is Lebeau going to land his next gig at? Could it be Cleveland? Jimmy Haslem was a minority owner of the Steelers until he purchased the Browns. Who knows if this would happen. Just wishful thinking on my behalf.
     

- On Friday, Jets running back Chris Johnson was arrested in Florida on a weapon charge. Johnson had been arrested for carrying a weapon that he didn’t have a license for. Johnson does have a license to carry in Florida but according to reports, the gun he was carrying wasn't licensed to him. It make matters worse he was openly carrying the gun. I know gun/weapon charges vary from state to state but I'm very interested to see how this will turn out. Johnson is due $2 million dollars from the Jets for this upcoming season. With the new conduct policy in place, Johnson could be suspended without pay.  

- The baseball hall of fame inductees were announced this week and four members will enter the hall; Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Craig Biggio and John Smoltz.
