Browns Preview 11/17/17: Jacksonville Jaguars @ Cleveland Browns

By Katelin Marshall, @KatelinKnowsCLE

The still winless Cleveland Browns host the (6-3) Jacksonville Jaguars. The weather is going to be cold this weekend and the running game is going to be extremely important for both teams. The Browns lost pro-bowl linebacker Jamie Collins for the season last week.

Browns Offense vs Jags Defense

The Browns need to have success running the ball this week and they can't give up on it. The Jags defense is the best when it comes to defending the pass but against the run they are ranked 25th. The running game for the Browns actually had some success last week. Isaiah Crowell ran for 90 yards and a touchdown and both DeShone Kizer and Duke Johnson ran for just over 50 yards. This is how the Browns are going to have to play offensively going forward. They need Crowell and Johnson to average around 120 yards between them and then also take what the defense gives them when it comes to Kizer.

The passing game is getting some help with the return of Corey Coleman. Coleman will be active for the first time since breaking his hand against the Ravens. Kenny Britt finally decided to show up last week even if it was just for two catches and a touchdown. The issue with passing game is guys like Duke Johnson and Seth DeValve are first and third on the team in catches. Second is Ricardo Lewis who has 25 catches but let's be 100...He's barely a NFL receiver.

Browns Defense vs Jags Offense

The Jags offense could be without a number of playmakers this week. Rookie Leonard Fournette has missed some games due to injury and has been limited in practice this week. Also for the Jags, both starting receivers Allen Hurns and Marqise Lee have been absent from practice due to injuries. Even if one of the receivers can't go expect for Fournette or Chris Ivory to get plenty of snaps. Sunday won't be kind to the quarterbacks. And with Kizer and Blake Bortles under-center each team should just play it safe.

For the Browns defensively, expect James Burgess to get the bulk of the snaps with Collins out. Also Jabrill Peppers' role on defense could expand a bit more with the Collins injury. It will be interesting to see if Gregg Williams puts Peppers in at linebacker like the Cardinals do with Deone Bucannon.

Five Guys to Watch

1. DeShone Kizer: I'm curious to see if Hue Jackson continues to put Kizer in favorable positions. He's done so the last two games and it's worked out for the most part. Now if only someone playing receiver can go out and actually make a big play consistently.

 2. Emmanual Ogbah: Ogbah is actually one of the best run stoppers in the game and he is one of the big reasons the Browns rank 4th in rush defense. With terrible weather Ogbah need to be on the field as much as possible in order to limit Fournette or Ivory.

3. Joe Schobert: If I would have told you that Schobert would be leading the Browns in tackles this season last year no one would have believed me...but its true. Schobert cutting weight and moving to middle linebacker has given him a NFL career. Again with a run heavy game plan Schobert will have his name called multiple times.

4. Corey Coleman: I am so glad Coleman is back. Yes, he probably won't get 12+ targets this week but with Coleman back the Browns have a reliable receiver going forward. And I'm sure Kizer can't wait to use his favorite toy again.

5. Jabrill Peppers: Peppers is on the list because of what I said above. He is really good near the line of scrimmage and its something to keep an eye out for if Gregg Williams starts using him as the linebacker hybrid he really is.

Injury Report:

Weather Report:

Betting Line (as of 11/16/17): Jacksonville -7.5

Predictions: Jacksonville 17 Browns...20!

I have a weird feeling about this game. With the terrible weather and all the shit talking the Jags have said this week, it seems like the perfect game for the Browns to win. IF they can take care of the football and not have any stupid mistakes in the redzone...The Browns have a really good chance of upsetting the Jaguars.

On The Mark 10.20.14 #Buckeyes & #Browns Recap

Buckeyes continue to improve, Browns regress
By @MarkW2112

Here is my combined recaps of the Buckeyes and Browns games from this weekend

Buckeyes:

The Ohio State Buckeyes came out with another statement game as they destroyed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 56-17.  It was no contest from the start as J.T. Barrett should now enter in to Heisman Trophy talk with another spectacular performance.  The freshman, who completed his first 9 passes, went 19-of-31 for 261 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air and added 107 rushes yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground.  It was another solid game for Ezekiel Elliot who ended with 69 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.  The play of the game came on a 1 handed grab by Evan Spencer for a touchdown, making it 56-10 at that point.  The offensive line continued it's excellent play, giving Barrett plenty of time to check down his reads and space to run the ball at will.

Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova, who was fantastic against Michigan, was nearly shutdown by the Buckeyes defense, going 17-of-28 for 192 yards and an interception to Doran Grant in the end zone at the end of the second quarter.  Earlier in the second, Rashad Frazier forced Janarion Grant to fumble on Rutgers 20 and was recovered by Eli Apple who ran it in for a touchdown.  The defense, while giving up 17 points, was solid nonetheless all game including 4 sacks, 2 from Joey Bosa.

My take: J.T. Barrett has not looked like a freshman since the Navy and Virginia Tech game.  He should be in the Heisman conversation but his biggest test comes in 3 weeks against Michigan State.  It's impressive that Ohio State's offense has scored over 50 points 4 games in a row for the first time in it's 125 year history.  Unless the unforeseen happens, Barrett is on his way to breaking the single season touchdown record for a Buckeyes quarterback.

Next up: in Happy Valley next Saturday against the Penn State Nittany Lions at 8 PM

Browns:

In their worst all around game of the year, the Browns lost to the previously 0-6 Jacksonville Jaguars 24-6 in a game dominated by the Jags defense.  Brian Hoyer, sharp almost all season, looked lost along with the rest of the offense for most of the game. The offensive line couldn't get any holes open for their running backs, a first this year. However, this loss might be solely on the coaching staff, who made blunders throughout the game, including going for it on 4th-and-1 instead of going for the points.  This lead to the Jags taking the lead 7-6 at the end of the first half.

The game got worse from there.  With game at 10-6, the Jags punted the ball only to be fumbled by Jordon Poyer at the 3 yard line and recovered by the Jags, leading to a Denard Robinson (yes, that's not a typo) 3 yard run.  After that, Hoyer threw his second interception which lead to a Storm Johnson 3 yard touchdown to complete the blowout near the end of the game.

Tashaun Gipson had a great game with 2 interceptions against Blake Bortles, who wasn't great but somehow was the winning quarterback due to Hoyer being even worse.  The defense also gave up 127 yards to Robinson, who looked like an all pro.

My take: this was a "Trap" game and the Browns fell right in to it.  Gus Bradley should be commended for his game plan on defense.  Mike Pettine coached his worst game this year, Brian Hoyer played his worst game as a starter and the offensive line sorely misses Alex Mack.  While the defense did a pretty good job on Bortles, Denard Robinson had a damn fine game in his first start at running back.  It is definitely a game the Browns want to wipe from their memory.

Next week: at home against the Oakland Raiders and their rookie QB Derek Carr.  You know revenge has to be on his mind since the Browns passed on him in the draft.

Leadoff with Lee: Cleveland Sports 4.10.14

-As I reported yesterday the Jacksonville Jaguars offered Browns center Alex Mack a contract. Monetary terms of the deal have not been disclosed. But looking at past deals signed by offensive linemen and most recent,Carolina's Ryan Kalil signed a 6 year deal worth $49 million dollars and $19 million guaranteed. The Browns have 5 days to match the deal as Cleveland placed the transition tag on Mack. Jimmy Haslem made it clear Tuesday night "We want Alex to be a Brown". Haslem also stated he is very optimistic that Mack will be a Brown for the long term future. Which means to me the Browns will match the Jags offer. The bigget obstacle for the Browns is should the Browns offer more guaranteed money up front or give him less money guaranteed and backload his salary to make sure Mack retires as a Brown.

-The Cavs defeated the Pistons 122-100 but have been officially eliminated from the playoffs as the Hawks defeat the Celtics. Dion Waiters scored 22, Tyler Zeller scored 18,rookie Matthew Dellavedova had 14 points and 12 assists and Spencer Hawes added 15.

-The Indians lose the 2nd game of their doubleheader yesterday 2-1. The lone run was scored by DH Yan Gomes.         -The Tribe also optioned RHP Vinnie Pestano to Triple-A Columbus to recall RHP C.C Lee. No relation to Chris Lee j/k
