On Deck Circle 6/23/17: Who's Real and Who's Fake?

By Pat Luhta, @PLuhta

The MLB season is quickly approaching the halfway point, teams are hitting the 70 game mark on the season. Right now, there is still a ton of sorting to be done among the top of the division and it can turn quickly one way or the other for any team. There are even teams out there that may win their division and make the playoffs, but will be overmatched and aren't truly made of championship material.

It's time to predict which current contending teams are actually real and will remain in contention and be considered a World Series team, and which ones are fake and will eventually fall off, whether it's before the end of the season or if they manage to make the playoffs. Here's a breakdown of the division leaders and contenders and if they are here to stay or if they are fool's gold.

AL EAST

New York Yankees - REAL: It took everyone a little while to start believing that this team has staying power but the Yankees seem to be back. Their offense, led by Aaron Judge, is exploding this year and if Judge, along with Gary Sanchez, Starlin Castro and others, can keep this up then they have what it takes to remain the division leaders. Their pitching is also looking real good, Luis Severino and C.C. Sabathia (no, you're not seeing things) are having good seasons and what's scary about their staff is that Masahiro Tanaka has not been good. If he turns it around a bit then there's no telling what this team is capable of. They have hit a little bit of a slump lately, but nothing to worry about long-term as this team is for real.

Boston Red Sox - REAL: This team has it all and may end up being the team to beat in the American League. Betts, Bogaerts and Benintendi make a powerful triple threat on offense that is making up for the loss of David Ortiz and Chris Sale has been worth every little bit of the trade so far as he has been their ace pitcher. In order for the Red Sox to become that team to beat though, they will need David Price to fully return to form as right now they really do not have a solid #2 starter behind Sale. Still though, the Red Sox are a team that will be in contention all season long.

Tampa Bay Rays - FAKE: The Rays are currently hanging on in the wild card hunt, but I don't see it lasting too much longer. With a slew of teams right behind them and if they fall out just a little bit then expect them to be seller's at the deadline. I'm not counting them completely out, their offense may provide enough to keep them in it, but Chris Archer will again be a hot commodity at the trade deadline and the Rays end up dealing him this year.

AL CENTRAL

Cleveland Indians - REAL: I've been saying for a month now that the Indians are just working things out and they will be fine. Sure enough, they have seemingly turned that corner are now in 1st place in the division. Edwin Encarnacion is crushing the ball after a very slow start to the season and after a brief DL stint, Corey Kluber is looking like his Cy Young form. This is the team that made the World Series last season, they are definitely for real.

Minnesota Twins - FAKE: The Twins had the luxury of the Indians starting off sluggish, so they did what they could to gain a lead in the division. While Brian Dozier and Miguel Sano have been bright spots in the lineup and Jose Berrios looks like a future ace, their playoff hopes seem about up. Put it this way, when a team has over -40 run differential and ranks 28th in team ERA, there's no chance to sustain a first place lead or make up ground on the wild card spots. Because of that, I have to call the Twins as fake.

AL WEST

Houston Astros - REAL: I'm honestly not sure how anyone could consider this team to be fake, they are as real of a team as it gets. They have the best record in the entire MLB, Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve are both legitimate MVP candidates and their pitching is in the top 5 in a majority of stats. There isn't much else to say, this team is for real and the current favorite to win the World Series.

NL EAST

Washington Nationals - REAL: Even though they are going to win their division and have one of the best records in the league, this was tough for me to choose. Don't get me wrong, on paper they are definitely legit and have what it takes to win the NL, but they use their starting pitching so much that there's a decent chance the wear and tear down the stretch could lead to another 1st round exit. But ultimately, I have to go with the Nationals being real, they have everything it takes so can't call them anything but solely based on a hypothetical that their pitching will eventually breakdown. I don't have high hopes for their playoff run, but this team is for real.

NL CENTRAL

Milwaukee Brewers - FAKE: Let me start by saying that the Brewers are fake, for now. They are beginning to prove themselves and win me over, but I'm just not ready to jump all in on them right now. They are just so middle of the road in many team categories, and both batting and pitching and are being led by some unlikely players. While Eric Thames and Chase Anderson have been real good stories, are we 100% sure that they will keep this going all season long? They just have very little margin for error, and while they likely will win the division, it's still too soon to buy them as a real threat.

Chicago Cubs - FAKE: What? The defending World Series champs are fake this season? At first I thought it was just a little lack of motivation after winning it all last year, that they'd shrug it off and turn it up, but this team has some serious holes that do not look fixable. Their offense is just lacking, Anthony Rizzo being the only player that's really living up to his norm this season. They are 29th in batting average, 18th in On Base %, 19th in OPS, 17th in runs and 29th in stolen bases, all the makings of a pretty subpar offense overall. Their pitching isn't much better, with only 1 starting pitcher (Jon Lester) with an ERA under 4. This goes beyond just a "championship hangover" and are real issues that makes this alarming. They need to win the division in order to even make the playoffs thanks to the 3 teams in the NL West and with these problems, don't be surprised if they miss out on the postseason.

NL WEST

Los Angeles Dodgers - REAL: What if I told you at the start of the season that the offensive MVP of the team would be Cody Bellinger and the Cy Young of the team would be Alex Wood? Bellinger started the season in triple A and the Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw, but sure enough, those two are leading the way for the Dodgers. Bellinger leads the entire NL in home runs despite not being called up until April 25th, add him to a lineup that already has Corey Seager, Justin Turner, Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez and there's reason why this team is one of the best statistical offenses in the league. Kershaw is still typical Kershaw,(10-2 2.60 ERA, 115 K's) but Alex Wood has just been that much better this season. Wood is 7-0, 1.90 ERA and 72K's in 12 games this season, he's a legitimate 2nd ace on the team. With the offense as good as it is and the pitching being top notch(including Kenley Jansen being 15/15 in saves with 50 K's and zero walks), this team is for real.

Colorado Rockies - REAL: The Rockies having a good offense is nothing new, the friendly atmosphere in Denver will always give them a boost in numbers. But this offense has some serious talent and the offensive numbers can't be blamed on the thin air in Denver. Charlie Blackmon may be the best CF in the NL(McCutcheon isn't ready to give that crown up just yet), Nolan Arenado is a star 3B with ridiculous HR ability and Mark Reynolds is having a career renaissance. Their starting pitching isn't great, but their bullpen has been exceptional this year. Greg Holland leads the league in saves as Adam Ottavino sets the table for him, a top 5 offense with a shut down bullpen is a perfect way to mask any issues with the starting pitching. And we're still a month away from the trade deadline, do not be surprised if the Rockies go for Chris Archer or Jose Quintana to help the starting rotation. Rockies are a playoff team that can contend with any team in the MLB, this team is for real.

Arizona Diamondbacks - REAL: I have been hesitant to call them real all season so far, but can't deny what this team is doing and any team that is circling around +100 in run differential needs to be taken seriously. Paul Goldschmidt leads the way for an offense that is also one of the best in the league(it's an NL West thing), with Jake Lamb, Chris Owings and Brandon Drury also providing a ton of pop off the bat. This team last trade deadline was looking to be sellers and the main guy they were looking to unload was SP Zack Greinke. In his first of a 6 year 205 million dollar deal with the Diamondbacks, Greinke underperformed and the team was looking to give up on him, and it's a good thing for them that they didn't. Greinke has returned to All-Star form, 8-4 with a 3.14 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, he's also struck out 111 batters while only walking 19. Robbie Ray has also been a solid starter for them and Fernando Rodney has been a perfect 20/20 in save opportunities this season. The NL West will be such a fun race the rest of the season and its a shame that 2 of these 3 teams will have to play in the 1 game wildcard playoff. Not sure who the best of the 3 are, but Arizona has a good of a claim to being the best as any.

Wrestling Lockup With Brandon 6/22/17: NXT

By Brandon Albright, @B_Rock1978

NXT is back this week with things still unsettled between NXT Women's Champion Asuka and Nikki Cross, as they left each other laid out last week. Ember Moon returned this week after suffering from a shoulder injury. NXT World Champion Bobby Roode continued his current feud with Roderick Strong. Kassius Ohno tried to talk some sense into his friend Hideo Itami after his current losing streak continued. The undefeated Aleister Black stepped into the ring this week as well.

** This Weeks Card **

- Ember Moon battled Peyton Royce as Ember returned to action this week.
- SAnitY battled The Ealy Brothers.
- Rachel Evers battled Sonya DeVille.
- Aleister Black battled Kassius Ohno.

** NXT **

- Ember Moon vs. Peyton Royce: The match closes out with Ember hitting a suicide dive on Billie Kay at ringside. Back in the ring, both ladies reverse pinfall attempts on each other. Peyton hits a Widows Peak on Ember and gets a near fall. Ember sends Peyton into the corner and hits the Eclipse Stunner to score the pinfall.
Winner: Ember Moon, by pinfall.

- Backstage, Hideo Itami apologizes to Kassius Ohno for the way he's been acting all month. Itami says he's not had the same success in NXT that he had in Japan and it's starting to bother him. Ohno understands and says that's all going to change tonight.

- Ealy Brothers vs. SAnitY: The match closes out with Wolfe working over Gabriel until he finally tags in Uriel. Uriel unloads on Eric Young and Wolfe. Uriel goes for their finisher on Wolfe, but Young makes the save and takes out one of the Ealy Brothers.
The referee tells Young to get out of the ring as Wolfe delivers an illegal thumb to the eye on the other Ealy Brother. Young hits his neck breaker finisher and scores the pinfall.
Winners: SAnitY, by pinfall.

- It's announced that Asuka will defend her NXT Women's Championship next week against Nikki Cross in a Last Woman Standing Match.

- Rachel Evers vs. Sonya DeVille: The match closes out with Rachel hitting a jaw breaker and landing some punches on Sonya. Sonya counters and delivers punches of her own, firing herself up to the point that she takes off her MMA gloves to continue the beating. Sonya finally traps Rachel in a wrist lock arm submission and gets the tap out win.
Winner: Sonya DeVille, by submission.

- NXT World Champion Bobby Roode is at a photo shoot when Roderick Strong and his family arrive. Roode mocks Strong saying that he'll need a double wide trailer soon if he keeps having kids. Roode then tells Strong's fiance that if she ever wants to be with a real man than Bobby Roode is available. Strong snaps and attacks Roode, brawling with him until both men are separated. Roode tells Strong he can have a title shot anytime, anyplace.

- Kassius Ohno vs. Aleister Black: The match closes out with Ohno landing a corner kick on Black. Ohno continues to deliver kicks on Black until Black gets a near fall pinning combo. Black delivers more strikes and gets a near fall after connecting with a knee on Ohno. Ohno returns more strikes, takes off his elbow pad and goes for the Rolling Elbow. Black counters and we get a series of kicks, knees and forearms. Ohno attempts the Rolling Elbow again, but gets hit with the Black Mass kick instead from Black. Black covers and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Aleister Black, by pinfall.

We are two days removed from this past Sunday's WWE Money In The Bank! Jinder Mahal is still our WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Baron Corbin is Mr. Money In The Bank and Carmella became Ms. Money In The Bank in a very controversial way. Daniel Bryan returns this week to Smackdown Live in Dayton, Ohio and has promised that the Women's Money In The Bank controversy will be the first thing he addresses.

** Smackdown Live Card **

- Big E battled Jimmy Uso.
- Dolph Ziggler battled Shinsuke Nakamura.
- WWE United States Champion Kevin Owens defended his title against Chad Gable.
- WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jinder Mahal battled Luke Harper in a non title match.

- The Women's Money In The Bank controversy is addressed.

- Randy Orton makes a threat to WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jinder Mahal.

- WWE United States Champion Kevin Owens throws out an Open Challenge for the title that AJ Styles tries to answer.

** Smackdown Live **

- Backstage, all the women from the Money In The Bank Ladder Match are arguing about how it ended. Daniel Bryan arrives and says he wants to hear what Carmella and James Ellsworth have to say first before he makes a decision.

- Carmella and James Ellsworth Promo: Carmella says she's sick of hearing people say she made a mockery of the Women's Division and ruined a historical moment. She claims to have been overlooked since day one and mocks the other women. Carmella calls the fans internet trolls who've forgotten how guys like Seth Rollins needed help from Kane to win Money In The Bank and Bray Wyatt stopped Roman Reigns from winning it in the past. Carmella says she won fair and square and Daniel Bryan needs to recognize that and officially announce her Ms. Money In The Bank.

- Backstage, Charlotte finds Daniel Bryan and tells him that he needs to do the right thing about Carmella because it was a joke how the Women's Money In The Bank Ladder Match ended.

- Big E vs. Jimmy Uso: The match closes out with Uso countering the Big Ending and escapes outside. Both Usos try to walk out again, but Kofi flies off the steel steps and take out The Usos. Woods trys to stop Jimmy from leaving as Big E comes outside. Jimmy lands a shot on Big E and enters the ring. Big E follows Jimmy, dodges an Uso Kick and hits the Big Ending to score the pinfall.
Winner: Big E, by pinfall.

- Backstage, Nattie Neidhart and Tamina confront Daniel Bryan while on the phone with Shane McMahon. Nattie congratulates Bryan on being a dad now. Tamina, however, wants to know what's going on with the controversy of the Women's Money In The Bank Ladder Match. Bryan says he'll make his decision soon and then asks Shane if he can call him back.

- Backstage, Naomi is confident that Daniel Bryan will make the right decision on the Women's Money In The Bank controversy. Lana interrupts and says she would've won the WWE Smackdown Live Women's Championship if it wasn't for Carmella and James Ellsworth distracting them. Lana challenges Naomi to another title match. Naomi accepts it for next week and threatens to slap Lana back to Russia.

- Interview With Randy Orton: Orton says things with Jinder Mahal are far from over, he's going to end Mahal's career even if he has to break the Singh Brothers' necks. Orton says Mahal disrespected the Orton family so maybe he should go to India and deliver RKO's to Mahal's family. Orton says Mahal made a big mistake and he can't turn back now.

- Dolph Ziggler vs. Shinsuke Nakamura: The match closes out with Ziggler landing an elbow, counters the Exploder suplex and hits the Zig Zag for a near fall. Ziggler traps Nakamura in a sleeper hold submission, but Nakamura escapes and hits a knee on Ziggler. Nakamura drills Ziggler with Kinshasa and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura, by pinfall.

- Backstage, Becky Lynch interrupts Daniel Bryan and Sami Zayn. Zayn says Becky got robbed and he was rooting for her. Becky says it's frustrating because she had her hand on the briefcase until James Ellsworth got involved. Becky asks Bryan what he's going to do about it, but Bryan says it's complicated. Becky asks how is making the right decision complicated and then walks off.

- Kevin Owens Promo: Owens says there was an injustice that happened at Money In The Bank that's why he doesn't have the briefcase. Owens says he's still the Face of America and the WWE United States Champion so he's throwing out an Open Challenge to anyone from Dayton, Ohio. AJ Styles suddenly interrupts and says he's answering the challenge. Owens refuses because Styles is from Georgia. American Alpha interrupt next and Owens says they aren't from Dayton either. Chad Gable says he just moved here this morning so he technically is from Dayton. Owens wants proof, so Styles gives out Gable's address and tells the time keeper to ring the bell.

- "WWE United States Championship Match": Kevin Owens (c) vs. Chad Gable: The match closes out with Owens talking trash to AJ Styles who's on commentary. Gable drops Owens and gets a near fall moonsault off the top rope. Owens sends Gable into the post, but Gable comes back with more offense and hits a german suplex for a near fall. Owens surprises Gable with the Pop Up Power Bomb and scores the pinfall to retain his title.
Winner: Kevin Owens, by pinfall, to retain the WWE United States Championship.

- Backstage, The Hype Bros. remind Daniel Bryan that they were the #1 Contenders back in December before Zack Ryder was injured. Bryan says that if they can beat The Usos in a non title match next week then he'll make them the #1 Contenders again.

- Daniel Bryan Promo: Bryan says he and Shane McMahon have been discussing the Women's Money In The Bank controversy. Bryan calls out all five ladies to make his final decision. Bryan says there are no rules in a Money In The Bank Ladder Match and people have had help in the past, however, no one has ever had someone else climb the ladder and retrieve the briefcase for them. James Ellsworth interrupts and accuses Bryan of being soft now that he has a little vegan baby. Bryan threatens to knock Ellsworth out if he ever says anything about his child again. All five ladies begin to argue with each other and Bryan has to calm them all down. Bryan announces that Carmella must forfeit the briefcase and there will be another Women's Money In The Bank Ladder Match next week. Carmella and Ellsworth are furious as a brawl breaks out. Charlotte hits Natural Selection on Carmella and Becky Lynch traps Carmella in the Dis Arm Her submission to end the segment.

- Jinder Mahal vs. Luke Harper: The match closes out with Baron Corbin arriving with his Money In The Bank briefcase. Corbin fakes a cash in and laughs at Mahal. Harper hits a super kick on Mahal. One of the Singh Brothers jump on the apron and Harper takes a swing at him. Mahal grabs Harper on the distraction and hits the Cobra Clutch Slam for the pinfall. After the match, Randy Orton hits the ring, takes out the Singh Brothers and then unloads on Mahal. Orton clotheslines Mahal on the floor, tosses him on the announcers table and then tosses him into the timekeepers area. Orton hits the draping DDT on Mahal on the floor and tosses Mahal into the ring. Orton goes for the RKO but the Singh Brothers attack. Orton hits RKO's on both brothers as Mahal escapes.
Winner: Jinder Mahal, by pinfall.

Joe rolls to the floor for a breather then gets back in the ring. Reigns goes for another spear, but an ambulance suddenly backs into the arena. The back doors bust open and Braun Strowman pops out. Reigns gets distracted allowing Joe to lock in the Coquina Clutch submission. Reigns passes out and Joe wins. After the match, Strowman hits the ring, tells Reigns that he promised that he wasn't done with him and then slams Reigns to the mat.
Winner: Samoa Joe, by submission.

Miz says Maryse is his heart, his soul, his everything and Dean Ambrose is trying to get what he can't have, the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Miz begs Maryse for forgiveness and she finally does as Dean Ambrose interrupts. Miz accidentally dumps champagne on Maryse and accidentally breaks the clock again going after Ambrose. Maryse storms off and Ambrose tosses Miz outside. The two bears suddenly attack Ambrose and reveal themselves as Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel. Dallas and Axel beat down Ambrose and then Miz hits the Skull Crushing Finale on Ambrose to end the segment.

- Backstage, Kurt Angle is questioning the Big Show about the attacks on Enzo and Big Cass.

- Sheamus and Cesaro vs. Titus O'Neil and Apollo Crews: The match closes out with Crews hitting a standing moonsault on Sheamus for a near fall, as Cesaro breaks up the pinfall. Crews tosses Cesaro outside. Sheamus distracts the referee, allowing Cesaro to come back and land a cheap shot on Crews. Sheamus and Cesaro hit a double team finisher and score the pinfall.
Winners: Sheamus and Cesaro, by pinfall.

- Nia Jax vs. Sasha Banks: Alexa Bliss is on commentary for this match. The match closes out with Emma arriving and confronting Alexa at the commentary table.
