Wrestling Lockup with Brandon: RAW

By Brandon Albright, @B_Rock1978

Wrestling Lockup with Brandon, brought to you by Triple Threat CLE, is back with this week's RAW Recap Edition.

This week's RAW was live in St. Louis, Missouri. The new era in wrestling begins tonight, as both Shane and Stephanie McMahon have been announced as the RAW GM's. Cesaro battled Kevin Owens with the winner getting a future match against The Miz for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Goldust took on Tyler Breeze in a one on one match. Big Cass and The New Day take on The Dudley Boys and The Vaudevillains in eight man tag team action. Becky Lynch battled Emma in one on one Women's Division action. Dean Ambrose returns with the Ambrose Asylum with special guest Stephanie McMahon. A battle royal was held to determine a new #1 contender to Kalisto and the WWE United States Championship. WWE Women's Champion, Charlotte weighs in on the Chicago Screwjob she pulled on Nattie Neidhart at WWE Payback. Main event time saw a six man tag team match with WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Roman Reigns, and The Usos vs. AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson.

*** RAW ***

- Stephanie and Shane McMahon Promo: Stephanie says it feels great to be back and is immediately cut off by Shane's music and entrance. Stephanie says she's learned how to do good business the seven years Shane was gone, hands Shane a gift and says she wants to embrace this new partnership. Shane's gift is the same picture of Shane and Vince that Vince stepped on last month when Vince considered Shane dead to him. Stephanie says there is no catch to the gift and is curious of what ideas Shane has for tonight. Shane appreciates the gift and is curious about Stephanie's ideas as well. Before either give anything away, Kevin Owens interrupts. Owens mocks Shane and Stephanie's new partnership and says he should get what he deserves, a WWE Intercontinental Championship match. Owens says he has no hope for Shane, praises Stephanie and states his contract grants him a rematch. Cesaro interrupts and says he had The Miz beat at Payback, but thanks to Owens he lost. Shane announces that it'll be Cesaro vs. Owens right now, with the winner getting a shot at The Miz and the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

- "#1 Contenders Match": Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens: The Miz and Maryse are on commentary. The match closes out with Owens grabbing Miz's IC-Title and tries to hit Cesaro. Cesaro hits Owens and Miz both with uppercuts. Cesaro goes for the Cesaro Swing on Owens, but Miz attacks Cesaro, forcing the referee to throw out the match. After the match, Owens and Miz shove each other and then beat down Cesaro. Sami Zayn hits the ring, decks Miz with a clothesline and then brawls with Owens. Zayn blocks a Skull Crushing Finale from Miz and hits the exploder suplex. Zayn hits a Helluva Kick on Owens, but misses one for Miz, as Maryse pulls Miz to the floor.
Winner: No Contest

- Backstage, Dean Ambrose tells Stephanie McMahon that he's not buying her new nice attitude. Stephanie offers to be a guest on the Ambrose Asylum and Ambrose accepts.

- Backstage, R-Truth says it was easier getting a team started with Goldust than it has been with Tyler Breeze. Goldust interrupts and mocks Breeze. Goldust's new partner Fandango arrives and they dance as Truth and Breeze take selfies.

- Backstage, AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson talk about WWE Payback. Styles guarantees he's leaving Extreme Rules with the title. Roman Reigns interrupts, says he respects Styles, but not Gallows and Anderson. The Usos arrive and all three challenge Styles, Anderson and Gallows to a six man tag team match tonight.

- Goldust vs. Tyler Breeze: The match closes out with Goldust trying to talk to R-Truth who's at ringside. Truth and Fandango who's also at ringside start dancing together, distracting Goldust. Breeze rolls up Goldust and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Tyler Breeze, by pinfall.

- The New Day Promo: The New Day mention Enzo's concussion, talks dirty about Beyonce and says they'll be waiting for Enzo and Big Cass when Enzo returns. The Vaudevillains interrupt. English says a real man like English and Gotch would've gotten up if they took that Enzo blow and they made Enzo the realest guy in the emergency room. The Dudleys interrupt and call English and Gotch carnies and feel they deserve a shot at the tag titles. Big Cass interrupts and sticks up for Enzo and calls the Dudleys and Vaudevillains SAWFT. Cass attacks Gotch and English and the Dudleys attack the New Day.

- "Eight Man Tag Team Match": Big Cass and The New Day vs. The Dudley Boys and The Vaudevillains: We get an impromptu eight man tag. The match closes out with Big E hitting a belly to belly on Gotch on the floor. Bubba hits the Bubba Bomb on Cass and gets a near fall. Kofi takes out Bubba, allowing Cass to hit the East River Crossing on Devon to score the pinfall.
Winners: The New Day and Big Cass, by pinfall.

- Becky Lynch vs. Emma: The match closes out with Becky hitting an exploder suplex on Emma for a near fall. Becky blocks a kick from Emma and goes for the Dis-Arm-Her submission, but Emma blocks. Emma gets the referee tied up with Becky for the distraction and hits the Michinoku Driver on Becky for the pinfall.
Winner: Emma, by pinfall.

- Ambrose Asylum, with Special Guest Stephanie McMahon: Ambrose says he's not buying the new nice Stephanie, but Stephanie says she couldn't be more happier. Ambrose talks about Roman Reigns spearing her at Wrestlemania. Stephanie admits she shouldn't have gotten involved. Ambrose talks about the McMahon's and says Stephanie must be mad that Vince put both her and Shane McMahon in charge.
Stephanie says it's time for a change in the new era, so she cancels the Ambrose Asylum, tells Ambrose to get out and announces the return of Chris Jericho and the Highlight Reel. Jericho arrives and immediately starts brawling with Ambrose. Ambrose hits a clothesline and unloads punches on Jericho. Jericho blocks Dirty Deeds and drops Ambrose with the Code Breaker. Jericho destroys the Ambrose Asylum set and busts "Mitch" the potted plant over Ambrose's back. Jericho talks trash to Ambrose before leaving.

- "#1 Contenders Battle Royal For The United States Championship": Kalisto was on commentary for this match. Titus O'Neil returns after being suspended. The final four came down to Zack Ryder, Rusev, Alberto Del Rio and Sheamus. Rusev thrust kicks Sheamus, allowing Del Rio to dump Sheamus to the floor. Rusev thrust kicks Del Rio and tosses him over the ropes, but Del Rio hangs on. Ryder steps in and eliminates Del Rio. Ryder hits a drop kick, and punch and the Broski Boot on Rusev. Rusev grabs Ryder and tosses him over the ropes for the win. After the match, Rusev and Lana taunt Kalisto.
Winner: Rusev, to become #1 Contender to Kalisto and the WWE United States Championship.

- Charlotte Promo: Charlotte says there was no screw job, the Hart family are just quitters and then calls referee Charles Robinson to the ring to give his side of the story. Robinson says Nattie Neidhart never tapped out, but was begging to stop the match and his friendship with Ric Flair had nothing to do with the outcome. Nattie interrupts and says Flair paid off Robinson because he knows the Harts are better. Charlotte tries to attack Nattie, but gets sent to the floor. Nattie slaps Flair, leg trips him and locks him in the Sharpshooter submission. Charlotte pulls her dad to safety as Nattie grabs Flair's Rolex and hall of fame ring and taunts the Flairs.

- Backstage, Stephanie McMahon tells Ric Flair that he's banned from ringside when Charlotte faces Nattie Neidhart in a rematch at Extreme Rules in a Submission Match.

- "Six Man Tag Team Match": Roman Reigns and The Usos vs. AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson: The match closes out with Jimmy landing a kick and a samoan drop on Styles for a near fall. Reigns sends Anderson to the floor with a clothesline, but gets hit from behind by Gallows. Gallows and Anderson send Reigns into the barricade and put the champ down. Styles hits the Phenomenal Forearm on Jimmy and scores the pinfall. After the match, Gallows and Anderson hold Reigns and tell Styles to hit Reigns with a steel chair. Styles throws down the chair and refuses. Gallows and Anderson attack Reigns as Jimmy comes from behind and hits Styles with the chair.
Jimmy and Jey clean house until Styles lands chair shots. Reigns is back in, Superman Punches Styles and then sends him to the floor. Reigns tosses Styles into the barricade and then power bombs Styles through the announcers table. Reigns stands over Styles before finally walking out to end RAW.
Winners: AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, by pinfall.

Ryback fights back, lifts Kalisto into the air and tosses him to the mat for a super gorilla press slam. Ryback goes back up to the top rope, but misses a flying splash on Kalisto. Kalisto is up, plants Ryback with Salida Del Sol, covers, scores the pinfall and retains the championship.
Winner: Kalisto, by pinfall, to retain the WWE United States Championship.

*** WWE Payback 2016 ***

- The New Day Promo: The New Day is out and announce they will be ringside for the finals of the #1 contenders tournament, which is sponsored by Booty-O's cereal. New Day send a shout out to Beyonce and announce a new era has begun in the WWE cause NEW DAY ROCKS!

- "Finals Of The #1 Contenders Tournament": Enzo and Big Cass vs. The Vaudevillains: Simon sends Enzo into the ropes, where Enzo lands throat first and snaps his head back. Enzo is down and hurt, as WWE medics rush the ring to check on him. The referee throws the match out as Enzo needs to be loaded onto a stretcher and given more medical attention.
Winner: No Contest

- Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens: The match closes out with Zayn countering the pop up power bomb and gets a near fall rollup on Owens. Owens counters a Zayn tornado DDT with a back breaker. Zayn and Owens trade shots back and forth after Owens tries to talk trash to Zayn. Owens lands a kick and goes for the apron power bomb on Zayn, but Zayn back body drops Owens on the apron. Zayn flies and hits the suicide DDT on Owens on the floor. Back in the ring, Zayn has Owens rocked in the corner and goes for the Helluva Kick. Owens dodges and drops Zayn with a super kick. Owens next hits Zayn with the pop up power bomb and scores the pinfall. After the match, Owens beats down Zayn some more before tossing Zayn to the floor. Owens tells commentator Byron Sexton that he just proved he's the better man and can now focus on getting back his WWE Intercontinental Championship.
Winner: Kevin Owens, by pinfall.

- "WWE Intercontinental Championship Match": The Miz (c) w/Maryse vs. Cesaro: Kevin Owens never leaves ringside and instead sits in on commentary. Miz spends some time in the match working over Cesaro's surgically repaired shoulder. The match closes out with Miz sending Cesaro shoulder first into the ring post and gets a near fall Skull Crushing Finale. Sami Zayn hits ringside and immediately goes after Kevin Owens. Zayn and Owens brawl around ringside and into the time keepers area. Miz gets distracted and ends up in the Cesaro Swing. Cesaro locks Miz in the cross face submission and Miz taps out...BUT...the referee is still distracted by Zayn and Owens and misses the tap out. Cesaro gets Owens and Zayn off the apron, but gets rolled up by Miz. Miz has a handful of Cesaro's tights for leverage and steals the pinfall. After the match, Cesaro nails Miz with a running uppercut and then plants Miz with The Neutralizer. Owens attacks Cesaro from behind, but Zayn makes the save. Owens grabs Zayn and plants him with a pop up power bomb. Owens goes for a pop up power bomb on Miz, but Maryse helps Miz escape.
Winner: The Miz, by pinfall, to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

- Backstage, Stephanie McMahon is spotted talking to Apollo Crews.

- Michael Cole announces that Enzo is resting and able to communicate at the local hospital, but still under medical care.

- Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho: The match closes out with Jericho blocking a super plex and head butts Ambrose to the mat. Jericho catches a mid-air boot from Ambrose off the top rope. Jericho counters Dirty Deeds and gets a near fall rollup. Jericho applies the Walls Of Jericho, but Ambrose fights it, escapes and near fall rollups Jericho. Jericho takes control and talks trash to Ambrose. Ambrose and Jericho trade punches, slaps and chops. Jericho drops Ambrose with an elbow and goes for the Lionsault. Ambrose blocks the Lionsault and goes for Dirty Deeds, but Jericho blocks it. Ambrose lands a series of knees on Jericho, hooks Jericho and finally hits Dirty Deeds to score the pinfall. After the match, Jericho throws a fit over his loss at ringside.
Winner: Dean Ambrose, by pinfall.

- Backstage, AJ Styles says he's having the match of his life and winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tonight.

- "WWE Women's Championship Match": Charlotte (c) w/Ric Flair vs. Nattie Neidhart w/Bret Hart: The match closes out with Nattie going for the Sharpshooter submission, but Charlotte counters and hits Natural Selection for a near fall. Charlotte hits a top rope moonsault on Nattie, gets another near fall and gets frustrated. Charlotte applies the Figure Four submission, but Nattie fights it, stopping Charlotte from bridging into the Figure Eight. Nattie reverses the Figure Four, but Charlotte escapes and slaps Nattie in the face. Charlotte applies Nattie's own Sharpshooter submission and referee Charles Robinson pulls a Chicago Screwjob and calls for the bell. Nattie is furious as she never tapped out and Bret Hart begins arguing with Ric Flair. Nattie attacks Charlotte as Bret punches Flair. Both Nattie and Bret lock in the Sharpshooter submission on Charlotte and Flair until they let them go.
Winner: Charlotte, by stoppage, to retain the WWE Women's Championship.

- Vince McMahon's The Decision: The Chicago crowd erupt with "CM Punk" chants as Vince arrives and Vince mocks the fans to chant louder. Vince begins to talk about the past RAW's, his favorite era and now the current RAW needs a new leader. Vince calls out Stephanie McMahon to the ring first. Vince says Stephanie is beautiful and the fans are animals for cheering when she was speared at Wrestlemania by Roman Reigns. Stephanie says it's ok cause she doesn't need the fans sympathy. Stephanie says she's a leader and runs down a list of things The Authority have done on RAW. Stephanie reminds Vince that she's been by his side, never ran away like Shane McMahon did and reminds Vince that Shane did lose to The Undertaker. Stephanie says that Vince needs her because she's the smartest, savviest and most experienced leader he can have. Shane's music hits and out comes Shane McMahon. Shane says he doesn't brag about himself like Stephanie, talks about all the major sports channels he was on promoting the company in the past and says Stephanie had nothing to do with all the WWE Network subscribers that she takes credit for. Shane reminds Vince he came back to guarantee a future for his kids, Stephanie's kids and the fans.  Vince makes his official announcement and says both Shane and Stephanie will have equal say on RAW and they need to figure things out. Vince wants to see them both destroy each other cause it would be great for the family and for RAW ratings.

- Michael Cole says that Enzo has a concussion, but all other tests came back negative.

- "WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match": Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles: The match closes out with Styles hitting a running forearm on Reigns for a near fall. Styles gets Reigns on his shoulders and drops Reigns over his knees and gets another near fall. Styles gets Reigns trapped in the Calf Crusher submission, but Reigns escapes to the floor. Styles hits a Phenomenal Forearm on Reigns out to the floor which puts Reigns through the announcers table. Reigns can't make the ten count and is counted out. Shane McMahon's music hits and out comes Shane. Shane says title matches won't end like this in the new WWE era and restarts the match with no count outs. Styles hits a Pele Kick on Reigns, but misses a 450 splash after Reigns gets his knees up.
Styles comes off the second rope, but gets low blowed in mid-air by accident by Reigns and Reigns gets DQ'ed. Stephanie McMahon's music hits and out comes Stephanie. Stephanie says as usual Shane forgot one important thing, this match will now be no count outs and no DQ's and the match is again restarted. Reigns dodges the Phenomenal Forearm and hits two Superman Punches on Styles, but Styles kicks out at two. Reigns goes for the spear, but Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson hit the ring and beat down Reigns. Styles hits the Phenomenal Forearm and covers, but Reigns somehow gets his foot on the rope at two and a half.
The Usos hit the ring and brawl with Anderson and Gallows. Styles gets shoved off the top rope by Reigns and takes out all four guys on the floor. Reigns suicide dives outside and wipes out everyone. Styles hits a shooting star press on Reigns for a near fall. Reigns counters the Styles Clash with a back drop. Styles dodges the Superman Punch and Reigns dodges the Phenomenal Forearm. Reigns finally spears Styles, covers and scores the pinfall.
Winner: Roman Reigns, by pinfall, to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

- Backstage, Vince, Shane and Stephanie McMahon are very pleased with the Reigns vs. Styles match. Vince is proud of both Shane and Stephanie and they all decide that at WWE Extreme Rules it'll be Reigns vs. Styles in an Extreme Rules Match.

- This ends WWE Payback.

On The Clock: NFL Draft 2016: The Real Journey Begins #NFLDraft2016 #Browns

By Alex Hale, @DaSportsGenius7

At long last the NFL Draft is behind us and now NFL teams can get back to developing their teams.  For fans like myself and many other people, we love to analyze what happened throughout the NFL Draft.  One thing was for sure with the 2016 NFL Draft, it was completely unpredictable.  After Jared Goff/Carson Wentz went #1 and #2, the entire 2016 Draft was full of twists and turns that nobody saw coming.  So with that said for our Browns fans, we’re going to go over each of the picks by the Browns with a grade, plus a few stories of the draft that caught my attention.
The Browns and their new regime tied an NFL Draft record with 14 draft selections.  The Browns also set a modern day draft record of selecting 5 WRs.  Hue Jackson, Sashi Brown and Paul DePodesta focused their energy on finding themselves playmakers and efficient defensive players.  What also stands out about the Browns draft class is their character and Football IQ.  It’s very clear that outside of the Analytics the Browns are using, Character and Football IQ will be very highly valued in future drafts.  As I grade the Browns picks, please be aware these are just initial feelings of the picks, I’m not going to just write off anyone as a failed pick like a lot of other Draft writers.  So let’s jump into what the Browns did in the NFL Draft.

1st Round (15th Overall)- WR Corey Coleman, Baylor- The Browns ideally wanted Oregon DE DeForest Buckner to be on the board at #8, but he went to San Francisco and the Browns almost immediately traded down.  At 15, the Browns had their choice of any WR in the draft and choice Coleman.  What Coleman lacks in size at 5'10", 195, he makes up for with his speed and ability to catch the ball.  What surprised me going back and watching him is his ability to attack the ball in the air even though he doesn’t have the size.  The kid is fearless and exactly the kind of playmaker the Browns need to send fear into defenses.  While I personally preferred TCU WR Josh Doctson or Ole Miss WR LaQuon Treadwell, after taking a few days to re-evaluate Coleman, I’d put Coleman right up there on the best WRs in this class.
My Grade: B+

2nd Round (32nd Overall)- DE/OLB Emmanuel Ogbah, Oklahoma St.- With Myles Jack on the board most people not only were surprised but criticized the pick.  My question to them is why?  While Ogbah doesn’t have the motor you look for that can be picked up over time.  Ogbah is perfect to play the OLB in the 3-4 and gives the Browns a big, explosive, and powerful pass rusher going forward.  This was rumored to be Dallas’ pick so the Browns weren’t alone with where they ranked him.  Ogbah to me was a 1st Round talent who slipped due to motor concerns, but in time I think will be an impact pass rusher for Cleveland.  More importantly this sends a message to Barkevious Mingo to either take the next step or he’s gone.
My Grade: B+

3rd Round (65th Overall)- DE Carl Nassib, Penn State- After selecting Ogbah, I sort of question the selection here, but the talent is worth taking here.  Nassib is quite the physical specimen at 6'7", 275 who I had as more of a 4-3 DE.  Nassib plays with a relentless motor and it helped him come from a walk on to a Nagurski Trophy finalist (Nation’s Top Defender).  Nassib is very raw as a player still and really needs to bulk up a bit more.  I think the Browns are viewing him as a 3-4 DE with some OLB ability, much like JJ Watt.  Extremely talented player with big upside, but I question the pick after taking Ogbah with other pressing needs.
My Grade: B-

3rd Round (76th Overall)- OT Shon Coleman, Auburn- Great value for the Browns in Round 3 as they snag their potential starting RT this year.  Coleman has a great story overcoming cancer and developing into a Day 2 NFL prospect.  He is on the older side (25 years old) but the talent is there.  One big thing to remember, he kept Texas A&M and Top 2017 NFL Draft prospect DE Myles Garrett in check when Auburn faced the Aggies.  He knows how to utilize his size and long arms, might need some refining on moving around on the line, but a very strong pick here.
Grade- A-

3rd Round (93rd Overall)- QB Cody Kessler, USC- Guys… let’s not panic.  For the record, I’m not a fan of the pick, but I get the pick.  It’s obvious that Hue Jackson sees a lot of Andy Dalton in Kessler.  First off Kessler gets the Browns and the fan base after going through the disarray at USC over the past few years.  He’s been through multiple coaching regimes and still finished at USC throwing 88 TDs to 31 INTs.  Remember there once was a time he was going to be a 1st Round pick.  While arm strength is a downside, he has everything else you look for in a QB.  Accurate, Poised, ran a Pro style offense in college.  And remember, Cody Kessler probably isn’t your QB of the future, if anything he’s your backup of the future.
My Grade: C+

4th Round (99th Overall)- LB Joe Schobert, Wisconsin- Just a productive LB at Wisconsin that was a Pro Football Focus favorite.  That should tell you why the Browns liked him.  He’s very instinctive and fluid with his movement and ability to get to the ball.  Does have pass rushing ability, but his size will probably limit him in the 3-4 scheme to more of a ILB role.  Overall good pick, adds a solid player to the defense.
My Grade: B

4th Round (114th Overall)- WR Ricardo Louis, Auburn- This is the one pick that confused me the most even after thinking it over.  Louis is the one guy that does have the size/speed combo unlike the other WRs drafted, but his hands are inconsistent.  He did show improvement at Auburn but at Auburn, WRs are very limited in what they do there.  I’m confused by the selection, especially when Pharoh Cooper was right there.
My Grade: D

4th Round (129th Overall)- S Derrick Kindred, TCU- Tough competitive leader that the Browns will need in their secondary.  Broke his collarbone going into his final season at TCU and Doctors recommended surgery, but Kindred played through it.  What stands out on the film is he’s an aggressive player who loves to play the game.  Unfortunately, he lacks a bit in tackling and in coverage.  He could develop into a starter and maybe even a leader for the defense, but he’s going to need time.  Fortunately, Kindred is the kind of guy who will work his butt off to get to that point.
My Grade: B-

4th Round (138th Overall)- WR/TE Seth DeValve, Princeton- Played WR at Princeton, Browns look to be moving him to TE.  Quite an interesting pick as a lot didn’t even have DeValve getting drafted.  What he has going forward is he understands routes and how to run them, which could benefit him at TE.  He’ll need work on blocking and will need to get more consistent catching the ball.  What impresses me the most is he’s great after the catch.  Browns might’ve found themselves a poor man’s Gronk.
My Grade: C+

5th Round (154th Overall)- WR Jordan Payton, UCLA- The Bruins’ all-time receptions leader is a solid get at this point.  He’s got good size at 6'1", 207, and good but not great speed.  What concerns me is his release off the line and his acceleration as it leaves a lot to be desired.  At the very least the Browns are getting a productive WR who knows how to catch the ball which is something you can’t have too many of.
My Grade: B-

5th Round (168th Overall)- OT Spencer Drango, Baylor- The LT for Baylor, the Browns get a solid value pick here.  He’s athletic for the position, but lacks a lot of strength.  Some see him as a potential Guard, but he’ll need to add strength.  Browns have said he’s going to be a RT for now and that makes sense.  He has short arms and as long as he can add some strength he’s great depth to have for the Browns O-Line.
My Grade: B

5th Round (172nd Overall)- WR Rishard Higgins, Colorado St.- How did "Hollywood" slip this far?  Higgins was at least a 4th Round guy to me.  Coming from a Pro-style offense in Colorado St., Higgins thrived as their #1 WR.  While the loss of Garrett Grayson hurt his numbers, it was more of teams adjusting to him.  He doesn’t blow you away with speed but he’s got great ball skills and can easily come into Cleveland and make an impact right away.  Just a consistent player who will catch the ball and makes plays.
My Grade: B+

5th Round (173rd Overall)- CB Trey Caldwell, Louisiana Monroe- I didn’t even have this guy ranked at all.  A shrimpy CB who runs well, but not great.  The best you can hope for is he turns out to be another K’Wuan Williams.  He seems to always have a good eye on where the QB is looking to throw and tends to be right where he needs to be.  Take into effect he didn’t play against the best competition, but Caldwell seems to be a tough, gritty CB who will work to get better.
My Grade: C+

7th Round (250th Overall)- LB Scooby Wright III, Arizona- How did Scooby last here is beyond me.  I would’ve targeted Wright in the 5th Round, but the Browns luck out and get him with their final pick.  Yeah he was banged up last year, but in 2014 you saw an instinctive talent that was the anchor for the Arizona defense.  He comes into a situation where he won’t be thrusted into starting but in time there’s no doubt Wright will start one day for the Browns.  Absolute steal in Round 7.
My Grade: A

Biggest Draft Storylines

Jacksonville Jaguars- Only a few short years ago, you could say the Jaguars were one of the biggest jokes of the league, but the past few years, the Jags ain’t messing around anymore.  David Caldwell did an excellent job, staying patient at #5 and landing FSU CB Jalen Ramsey.  Then in the 2nd Round stealing UCLA LB Myles Jack.  Even on Day 3 landing Notre Dame DT Sheldon Day.  Their other selections were very solid and will continue to build the Jaguars into a big time threat in the AFC.

Reaching for QBs- We all knew the first 3 QBs off the board were going to be Jared Goff, Carson Wentz and Paxton Lynch.  The question was who was going next?  The Jets started the craziness by selecting Penn St QB Christian Hackenberg.  The Patriots and Browns followed up by shocking critics everywhere by selecting Jacoby Brissett and Cody Kessler.  That led to a surprising slide for Michigan St QB Connor Cook who would end up a 4th Round pick by the Raiders.  Cardale Jones would go in Round 4 to the Bills as well.  This brings up a future trend of drafting backup/developmental QBs early even if they are reaches to have on longer, cheaper contracts.

Did Mike Mayock get Moritz Boehringer drafted?- During the NFL Network’s Draft coverage, NFL Draft insider Mike Mayock along with Rich Eisen, Charles Davis, and Daniel Jeremiah interviewed the German sensation WR Moritz Boehringer.  During the interview, Boehringer mentioned his favorite team to watch was the Minnesota Vikings because of Adrian Peterson.  This led to Mike Mayock to look into the camera and call out Vikings HC Mike Zimmer to draft Boehringer.  Soon after, Mike Zimmer actually called Mayock himself and while the conversation wasn’t really revealed, soon after the Vikings selected Boehringer.  Coincidence?  I think not.

The Laremy Tunsil Saga- We got to end with the biggest story of them all.  Almost 30 minutes before the NFL Draft started, a video and photo was posted online of Ole Miss OT Laremy Tunsil wearing a gas mask with obviously fumes coming from it.  This led a whole saga of where the video came from, when was it and more importantly who posted it.  But because of it, Tunsil would slide all the way to the Dolphins at #13.  The Ravens would later admit if it wasn’t for the photo/video, he was their selection at #6.  But you would think it was over after Draft Day…well then Tunsil got to Miami for his introductory press conference and then suddenly come down with an, “allergic reaction”.  While Tunsil did do his press conference later, this whole saga should be its own 30 for 30 one day.

I know people will pick "Winners and Losers", but let’s be honest, unless you had a draft like the Jaguars were you draft 2 of the top 5 players on the board in the first 2 rounds, no Draft Class should be called anything.  We won’t have an idea on who did well in this draft for another 3-4 years.  So to fans for all teams, whatever anyone says about your team’s draft, don’t let it get to you.  You can grade picks off of initial reaction, but you can’t call anyone a winner or a loser.  The 2016 NFL Draft was one of the most exciting ones in recent memory with its unpredictability.  For NFL fans everywhere, we can only hope the 2016 NFL season will be as unpredictable as the draft has been.  It’s been fun to write about the NFL Draft and the next time you’ll see me chime in about the 2017 NFL Draft class will be in the College Preseason to give everyone my Top 10 prospects for next year.

Hey…it’s never too early to look forward to next year's draft!
