Split Decision Special 5.11.16: On Curt Schilling & Hypocrisy In Sports Media

By Jason Disantis, @JasonInCLE

The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and are not necessarily representative of Triple Threat CLE or the other writers of Triple Threat CLE.

Before many reading this jump at the chance to get offended let me make one thing clear, this is not a bathroom law article.  This is a hypocrisy article.

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not a huge fan of a certain four-letter network in sports and entertainment.  They also know that I have had strong opinions against the NFL and other sports leagues due to policies and decisions that have been made within and outside of what I believe is there jurisdiction.  Much of my disagreement with ESPN and those leagues is due to their hypocrisies in regards to their employees and social issues.

The most recent examples of those hypocrisies lie in ESPN's firing of former MLB commentator Curt Schilling.  I'm not going to spend time going over the bathroom laws that started the newest social debate.  (If you don't know then search North Carolina bathroom laws or for goodness sake watch the news every once in a while)

Schilling posted on Facebook, "A man is a man no matter what they call themselves.  I don't care what they are, who they sleep with, men's room was designed for the penis, women's not so much.  Now you need laws telling us differently?  Pathetic."

ESPN then issued this statement regarding that post: "ESPN is an inclusive company.  Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated."

What ESPN should have said is that they are an "inclusive company" so long as you agree with them.  There is nothing "inclusive" about firing someone for disagreeing with you.  Fellow ESPN colleague of Schilling and host of "The Jump" on ESPN2, Rachel Nichols, also had some choice words in regards to the North Carolina law and the NBA possibly moving the 2017 All-
Star Game out of Charlotte due to the law.

"I would strongly urge the NBA to follow through on this if this bill isn't scrapped.  Discrimination is discrimination.  It's not okay to tell someone you're not going to serve them in your restaurant because you don't like their skin color..." Nichols said.  (She also butchered the actual law itself in her rant, referencing that the law was for the entire state of North Carolina when it was only for Charlotte)

Full disclosure here: I'm not black.  Nor have I ever knowingly been a victim of real racism.  But if I was black I would be giving Ms. Nichols an absolute earful.

Comparing asking a man with a penis to use a men's bathroom to being denied a service because of your skin color is grossly absurd.  I am surprised her comments haven't gotten more backlash from the black community and victims of racism.  Maybe it hasn't gotten the attention because not many watch ESPN2 original programming.

This isn't Schilling's first punishment from ESPN though.  He was taken off of 2015 MLB coverage after he retweeted a picture comparing radical Muslims to Nazis.

And while Schilling was getting pulled from MLB coverage, ESPN personality Tony Kornheiser later that year was comparing the Tea Party to ISIS while speaking with Howard Fineman when he asked if the Tea Party was, "like ISIS trying to establish a caliphate here?!"  Unlike Schilling, Kornheiser was never disciplined for this comment.

One of the most disturbing parts of ESPN's handling of the situation is while Schilling posted his views on a Facebook page, Nichols was using the company forum to let her ideology be known and push her agenda.

Which leads into the hypocrisy of NBA commissioner Adam Silver, and his threats of pulling the 2017 All-Star Game out of Charlotte.

"We've been, I think, crystal clear a change in the law is necessary for us to play in the kind of environment that we think is appropriate for a celebratory NBA event," Silver said at the Associated Press Sports Editors' commissioner meetings.

This is pretty low, even by major sports league commissioner standards.  Using your power to hurt the economy and people of a city and state because they do not agree with your personal ideology on bathrooms is deplorable.

But here is why it's hypocritical.

Earlier this year (during Toronto's All-Star weekend ironically enough), Adam Silver spoke of expanding the NBA and plans on developing the basketball in India.

"The billion followers of the NBA on social media include many millions of our fans in India as well."  Silver also spoke of the NBA's 10-person office in Mumbai and how happy he was with their television arrangement in India and plans how they have "plans to do more."

Before the commissioner gets too excited about expanding to India he should read up on their LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) laws.  Specifically section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which states that those engaging in homosexual intercourse, "shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine."  Simply put India is one of about 75 countries left in the world where being gay is a criminal offense.

So while knowing that moving an all-star game from Charlotte won't hurt his revenue stream, Silver can try to bully North Carolina into adopting his personal ideologies.  But an opportunity to add a new source of revenue and expand the NBA on a global scale is more important than the advancement of the LGBT community world-wide.

Too often those in a position of power use that power to push an agenda outside of their respective business.  If Adam Silver was as focused about his league's officiating as he was about making sure men were allowed to use the bathroom with girls then we would have a better product to watch.  ESPN should be focused on revolutionizing the way they bring sports and entertainment to its customers, not bullying their employees who don't share the same ideological views as them and the Disney corporation.

Those who preach tolerance the loudest are always the least tolerant.  Here are just another two examples.

By Chris Lee, @TripleThreatLee

- Johnny Manziel rented a West Hollywood home for two days last week, trashed it, and caused $32,000 worth of damage, according to property owner Nicholas Goodwin. A man who identified himself as Josh Gordon was with Manziel over the two day party. Goodwin has demanded pay for the damages and says that he went to the house two hours after the checkout time and found Manziel on the sofa passed out, with cocaine and mushrooms lying out on tables, and booze and broken glass everywhere, and cigarette burns on the carpet.

Manziel's agent Drew Rosenhaus spoke with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk Live Friday morning and says,

"Unfortunately there hasn't been any movement toward getting help that I'm aware of. I'm trying diligently to recommend this to Johnny. I'm not the first one, certainly not the only one. There are a lot of friends, family and people that want the best for this young man. He's got a plan, it's just different from than the one I talked about and what I would recommend to him."

This comes on the heels of Rosenhaus stating Johnny has five days to seek treatment or he will terminate the representation of Johnny Manziel.

- The Cleveland Browns claimed outside linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat waivers from Washington on Friday. The 25 year old Jeffcoat stands 6'3", 253-pounds and spent two seasons with Washington, appearing in nine games with one start. He recorded nine tackles, including a sack, to go along with one forced fumble and an interception.

- During the 2017-2018 season, NBA players will sport corporate logos on their uniforms, according to an announcement from the NBA on Friday. The patches will appear on the left shoulder of players’ uniforms — where the NBA logo used to be. The league’s logo was moved to the back of jerseys two years ago. Each team will have to sell its own ad space to sponsors. Teams will reportedly net half of the sponsorship money from the jersey ads, while the rest will go to the league’s revenue-sharing pool. The NBA is the first of the four major professional sports leagues to approve ads on jerseys.

- LeBron James has been named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for April, marking the 3rd straight month he's won the award. James averaged 28.8 ppg on 66% shooting, 8.4 rebounds & 7.8 assists in April.

- Don't look for any Dwayne Wade to Chris Bosh alley-oops in the playoffs this year. Bosh informed his teammates of his current status on Friday, and the Miami Heat are ready to play without Bosh for the NBA playoffs due to his ongoing battle with a blood clot condition that he has dealt with since the All-Star Break. It’s the second-straight year that he has dealt with a blood clot issue. It has not been confirmed by Bosh or the Heat that he has developed blood clots as he did last year, but the situation is considered serious.

- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver calls North Carolina's "Public Facilities Privary & Security" law problematic but no decision to keep or move the 2017 All-Star game in Charlotte.  The Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act passed a bill last month that requires transgender people to use the bathroom that aligns with the gender on their birth certificate, rather than that with which they identify. The new law also prohibits local governments from adopting or enforcing anti-discrimination policies not already contained in the state's anti-discrimination laws. Both the NBA and Hornets issued statements condemning the bill. This is the statement released by the NBA:

- Un-employed head coach Tom Thibodeau and ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy are the Timberwolves' top targets for vacant head coach. Minnesota owner Glen Taylor will be a part of the interviews that will include the executive firm Korn Ferry, which has been coordinating the search.

The Korn Ferry firm assisted Jimmy and Dee Haslem in the Browns coaching search which landed Hue Jackson.

Last night, NBA history was made!

In his final game of his illustrious 20 year NBA career, Kobe Bryant dropped 60 points in a comeback victory, topping the Utah Jazz, 101-96. The atmosphere was electric in the Staples Center as Bryant kept taking shot after shot... and making shot after shot! Kobe attempted 50 shots Wednesday night in his farewell game, shooting 22-50, and 6-21 from 3-point range in 42 minutes of play. It was easily the best moment of the season for the troubled 17-65 Lakers. After exiting the game to a resounding chorus of "Kobe!" chants from the Lakers faithful, Kobe took to the mic and stated:

I can't believe how fast 20 years went by, man, this is crazy. This is absolutely crazy ... and to be standing at center court with you guys, my teammates behind me, appreciating the journey that we've been on -- we've been through our ups, been through our downs. I think the most important part is we all stayed together throughout.

You can't write something better than this..... Mamba Out!

Take a look at some of the reactions from players around the league (click to enlarge):

Thank you Kobe Bryant. The final chapter in his career is the stuff of legends. - By Raven Williams, @nevaRWilliams

But that wasn't the only history made Wednesday night. With a 125-104 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, the Golden State Warriors became the winningest NBA team of all-time, reaching 73 wins, eclipsing the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls 72-10 record. Reigning, and likely back to back MVP, Steph Curry capped off his impressive regular season draining his 400th 3-pointer of the season, shooting 10-19 from beyond the arc, finishing the game with 46 points. With 73 wins now out of the way, the Warriors can now focus on their playoff run and attempting to be the first back to back NBA Champions since the 2012 and 2013 Miami Heat. Hopefully, the main cog of those Heat teams can prevent the Warriors from obtaining that goal. - By Raven Williams, @nevaRWilliams

And lastly from me, all of the seeding is set. Here's a look at the playoff match ups for the 2016 NBA Playoffs. Be sure to check out TripleThreatCLE.com and "TV Tonight" for game times.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- The Cleveland Browns claimed tight end Chase Ford via waivers Wednesday from the Baltimore Ravens. Ford is 6'6", 245 pounds and entering his fourth NFL season out of the University of Miami. Chase Ford graded well as a run blocker in his limited opportunities with the Minnesota Vikings. Last season, he was inactive for eight games with Minnesota and one game with Baltimore, before being placed on injured reserve. With the tight end position lacking depth, Ford, E.J Bibbs, Randall Telfer and Connor Hamlett will all be fighting for roster spots this season.

- In other Browns news, a possible trade scenario surfaced Wednesday that featured the Browns, Bills and Broncos being involved. This is the trade scenario posted by netonesports.com that made waves around the TwitterVerse.
Whether or not this trade actually happens, it's very interesting. Consider the rumblings that Tyrod Taylor wants out of Buffalo, the Broncos needing a quarterback and the Browns in "asset acquiring mode", it could all make sense. This trade can't be any crazier than all the mock drafts floating around.

- Hall Of Fame Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann is going back to the West Coast, this time as the man in charge.

Swann was named athletic director at the University of Southern California on Wednesday, the university announced. Swann is returning to the campus where he was a star from 1971-74, winning the national title in 1972 and making the All-America team in 1973. Swann takes over July 1 for Pat Haden. He is the third straight former USC football player to be named AD.

- Several outlets have reported that the Memphis Tigers athletic department has been in contact with Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith about becoming  their new head coach. According to one report, if Smith is offered the Memphis job he will accept. Memphis is expected to make a decision by the end of the week.

- NBA owners are scheduled to vote this week on putting ads on jerseys for the 2017-18 season, multiple sources told ESPN. The measure is expected to pass, according to sources. Several teams have begun testing the market to sell the potentially lucrative ads, which would be placed in a 2.5 x 2.5-inch patch on the left shoulder.

Corporate logos on player's jerseys are commonplace in the English Premier League and throughout international soccer. "With U.S. TV coverage of these leagues already bringing the sight of these jerseys into American living rooms, ads on players jerseys are an idea whose time has come," said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. Nike takes over for Adidas as the face of NBA apparel starting in 2017-18, meaning that’s the first season this new format could be debuted. There is a real potential that players might see an issue with the revenue split, especially if Nike jerseys on sale in the retail sector include the ads.

- Per NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Johnny Manziel's second agent this off season, Drew Rosenhaus, has informed the former Browns quarterback that he either gets treatment or he will no longer represent him. Rosenhaus stated Wednesday, "I have terminated the standard representation with Johnny Manziel in hopes of helping him get the treatment I believe he needs. I have informed him that if he takes the immediate steps I have outlined for him, that I will rescind the termination and continue to represent him. Otherwise the termination will become permanent. There is a five day window for me to rescind the termination. I'm hoping he take the necessary steps to get his life back on track".

Erik Burkhardt, left him in February when he refused to get help. The comments from Rosenhaus came after Manziel seemed "disheveled" Saturday night and showing up to a Sunset Strip nightclub and was later involved in an auto accident, where he was the passenger the same night. Rosenhaus told SiriusXM NFL "LA isn't a good place for Manziel." And with that, he has returned to Texas. Needs to start working out and get back to football. "It's a 'life & death situation' & he's trying to help a young man who's in trouble. Rosenhaus was also asked about his other Browns client, wide receiver Josh Gordon. Gordon experienced a "hiccup" & "temporary setback" in his NFL reinstatement. And believes he will be back in 2016.

-Over the past few days the sports story that everyone has been talking about is Donald Sterling vs. The NBA. Or should I say Donald Sterling vs. The World. I have heard people make the statements, being outraged that Sterling is being forced to sell the L.A. Clippers about comments he made in the privacy of his own home. The problem is he is just a one of 29 other owners which has it's own governing body and by-laws. Sterling's comments fall under conduct that is detrimental to the league. And under this by-law, he has agreed to not make such comments in which he did. Now you may ask how can the league force him to sell his team? It's going to take a 3/4 majority vote to oust him as owner and from preliminary opinion, he will lose the vote 29-0. If Donald Sterling refuses to accept any offers or bids for the Clippers, the NBA has the right to take ownership of the team and sell it to an appropriate bidder/bidders and or management group. What about the minority owners of the Clippers? They will receive fair compensation once the sale of the team is complete.

Who wants to buy the Clippers? The following names have been floated around as heading a management group. P.Diddy, Dr. Dre, Floyd Mayweather, Oscar De La Hoya and even Oprah Winfrey. Do you see a common theme with people I mentioned? They are all minorities. To think, how shitty Donald Sterling must feel to have to sell his team to a minority. Do I feel bad for Sterling? Hell no! He is going to sell his team for over $1 billion dollars, when he only paid $12 million for the team in 1981. Who do I feel bad for? I feel bad about the players who played for him, Doc Rivers and his coaching staff, the front office personal, the Clippers organization as a whole, the city of Los Angeles, America's youth and last but not least, my OWN kids. Yes my kids are half black and half white and this is 2014. They, nor anyone should have to deal or experience racism. You are entitled to your opinion about people regardless if they are black, white, gay or straight, dog or cat. But if you are a public figure like Donald Sterling, you deserve everything you are about to lose. But I will leave you with this, "EITHER LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE".

-The San Antonio Spurs take a 3-2 lead over the Dallas Mavericks with a 109-103 victory. The Mavs Vince Carter has been on fire, looking like he's in his 2001 Toronto Raptors form, scoring 28 points points. Dirk Nowitzski added 26 points and 15 rebounds for Dallas. San Antonio had a great overall team game. With 5 players in double digits, led by Manu Ginobli with 23 points. Tiago Splitter had 16 points and 12 boards. Tim Duncan added his piece by scoring 15 points with 8 rebounds. A critical Game 6 in Dallas is coming up for the Mavs, as they look to hang in this years playoffs on Friday.

-The Toronto Raptors narrowly escaped Game 5 with a win over the Brooklyn Nets, 115-113. The Nets put up 44 points in the 4th quarter, but could not complete the comeback victory. Kyle Lowry had a great game, dropping in 36 points. DeMar DeRozen added in 23. Joe Johnson led the Nets with 30 points. This series heads back to Brooklyn for Game 6 on Friday with the Nets trying to stave off elimination.

-Behind 21 points from Jeremy Lin, 20 from Chandler Parsons and 22 points and 14 boards from Dwight Howard, the Rockets will see another day. Houston edged out the Portland Trail Blazers 108-98 in Game 5. Wesley Matthews had 27 and Damian Lillard chipped in 26 for the Blazers. Game 6 will be Friday in Portland.

-The Angels defeated and swept the Tribe yesterday 7-1, losing their 6th game in a row. The Indians have only scored 13 runs in their last 6 games. The Indians had 3 hits in the final game with the Angels and also had 1 error. The Tribe seem out matched in the first month of this season. It's a matter of time when Tribe manager Terry Francona makes a change in the starting lineup as well as shake up the pitching rotation. The Indians don't want to repeat last years efforts and squeak into the playoffs with only 10 games remaining in the season.
