Cleveland Browns 2017 Season Preview: Offensive & Defensive Line

The 2017 Cleveland Browns' success will be because of how both of their lines play. The Browns spent most of their off-season addressing the Offensive line in free agency and the Defensive line during the draft.

On the offensive side, the Browns signed former Bengal Kevin Zeitler to play right guard and former Packer J.C. Tretter. The Browns made Zeitler the highest-paid guard in NFL history with a five year contract worth of $60 Million and then the Browns signed Tretter for three years worth about $15 Million. Lost in all of that though the Browns signed their own players, giving left guard Joel Bitonio to a five year extension. The Browns offensive identity this season is to be a ground and pound type football team. Hue Jackson wasn't able to run the ball as much as he would have liked to last season because of a number of reasons. Which is why the Browns are willing to spend almost $50 Million this season on their offensive line.

Four out of five Starting Linemen spots are filled: Joe Thomas (obviously), Bitonio, Tretter, and Zeitler. The only offensive line battle during the preseason is at right tackle, which involves, former first round pick in 2015, Cam Erving and last year's third round pick Shon Coleman. And going into the first preseason game, Coleman is listed as the starter and seems to be the favorite to win the job.

Outside of the starting five the Browns have have a lot of versatility on the offensive line. Cam Erving has played every o-line position during his football career. John Greco has been the starting right guard for the past five seasons. Greco has also shown an ability to play center if need be. The Browns also have Spencer Drango who played and started a number of games last season in place of Bitonio. And during the draft the Browns traded up for Rod Johnson, a left tackle out of Florida State. If anything, Johnson might become a practice squad, stash and then develop for a year or so.

Offensive Line Outlook: They will definitely be improved from last season. "IF" everyone stays healthy they could possibly be one of the best offensive line in the NFL. And if rookie quarterback Deshone Kizer starts, this offensive line shouldn't give Hue Jackson and company anything to be worried about.

The Browns defensive line might be the deepest part of the team. With the change to a 4-3 defense the Browns drafted a number of linemen this past April, headlined by the number one overall pick Myles Garrett. Garrett is the prototypical right defensive end. He will be attacking the quarterback's blind side and go one-on-one against the opposing team's left tackle. By doing that it will keep him fresh for passing rushing situations since the majority of the time teams run to right side of their offensive line. Garrett has shown during training camp he's a monster. Seeing him up close is kind of crazy. The guy is a physical freak and the Browns made the right choice taking him first in the draft.

Opposite of Garrett will be Emmanuel Ogbah, the Browns second round pick from last season. His rookie season was a tale of two halves. The first half of the season he struggled with his pass rush and during pass coverage as a 3-4 outside linebacker. But then he was switched to defensive end and that's where he finally excelled. This year he is going back to his college position as a defensive end in a 4-3 defense. The starting defensive tackles will be, former first round pick from 2015, Danny Shelton and Desmond Bryant. Shelton might have been the most improved player in 2016. It also looks like he slimmed down this off-season in order to play defensive tackle in the 4-3 defense. Bryant missed the 2016 season with a torn pectoral. In his three seasons in Cleveland, Bryant has started all 41 games he's played in. He's also the elder statesman on the Browns defensive line at 31 years old.

This is were the Browns defensive line depths shows. First, guys who are most likely going to make this team. Carl Nassib, who showed some flashes during his rookie season while playing with a broken hand. Rookies Larry Ogunjobi and Caleb Brantley. Ogunjobi was drafted in the third round and Brantley in the sixth. But the reason Brantley fell to the sixth round wasn't because of play, it was because of an alleged off-field incident that has already been cleared. Brantley was projected to be a top 50 pick in the draft, so its unlikely the Browns will cut him because of the value they got on him. Cam Johnson is another guy who seems to be a lock for this team as a pass rusher. In 12 games last season (nine starts) he recorded three sacks and two forced fumbles. And the last potential lock for this team is "The Pierogi Prince of Parma" Jamie Meder. Yes, Valley Forge's and Ashland's own is a lock to be on this team. Meder should transition into a solid defensive tackle in the 4-3. But his value isn't just on defense but special teams too. Meder blocked a field goal in the Browns' only win last season against the then San Diego Chargers.

Unfortunately, with all those guys as potential locks it doesn't leave much room for guys like Nate Orchard and Xavier Cooper. Both were part of the 2015 draft. Nate Orchard was a second round pick, but in his first two seasons he's battled injuries and playing as a 3-4 outside linebacker. He's in the same situation as Ogbah but might not get the benefit of the doubt because he was drafted by the previous regime.

Defensive Line Outlook: The defensive line is kind of hard to predict. Do they have the talent? Yes. But they are extremely young. And the success of a D-Line goes hand-in-hand with the success of the defensive backs and vise-versa. So if the line plays well, then overall the defense will be pretty good. And with Gregg Williams at the helm, its hard to see them not playing well for 16 games.

Krunch Time With Katelin: Browns Free Agency Thoughts

Our Cleveland Browns seem to do doing something right...and yeah, I know that sounds crazy. The Browns revamped their offensive line with the signings of J.T. Tretter and Kevin Zeitler, signed wide receiver Kenny Britt, traded for another second round pick (and quarterback Brock Oswieler) and still signed Joel Bitonio to a six year extension.All within the first day of the new league year. Since then its been quiet which is why I thought it would be a good idea to share my thoughts on the signings and also wrap-up the Terrelle Pryor situation.

First, I want to hit on the offensive line moves. It seems the Browns have given up on Cam Erving and might only keep him as a utility lineman. Erving's problems isn't because of a lack of effort but it just seems like he really isn't that good. He struggled a multiple positions in his two years with the Browns and it the Browns would rather not trust him as the starting center protecting whoever is the "franchise quarterback".

Tretter is a really good center but has a list of injuries during his short NFL career. Now, they seem to be freak injuries like the MCL one this past year, but its still going to be a risk with him, which is why the Browns won't get rid of Cam Erving so quickly, and won't (in my opinion) have Cam Erving compete for the right tackle position.

The Zeitler move shows the Browns aggressiveness not just in free agency but for this up-coming season. The Browns front office must believe they will have their franchise quarterback on the roster in July. It would seem crazy for the Browns to sign Zeitler to largest contract in league history for a guard and not have an idea who's going to be playing the quarterback position for the majority of this guys' contract. Now, whether its Jimmy Garoppolo or someone they take early in the draft, it really doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is that this regime has identified their quarterback and are going to build around him. And it seems like Hue Jackson convinced Zeitler they have a guy in mind and are going to do whatever they can to get that quarterback into a Browns' uniform.

And the Joel Bitonio extension was an obvious good sign that the Browns value their own players highly. And fans can see that with not just Bitonio's extension but Jamie Collins too. Plus, it is good "PR" for the Browns after last off-season with Mitchell Schwartz and his contract debacle.

Signing Kenny Britt was more about not having a hole at receiver if Terrelle Pryor decides to go somewhere else. And the Browns chose a really solid receiver in Britt to be Pryor's replacement. Britt is coming off of a 1000 yard season, a deep threat to open up the field, and also he's a veteran. He's the same age as Pryor but he's not the athletic freak like Pryor. Britt is a veteran so he can lead the Browns receiver room. Not just on the field but off-field too. Britt had to rebuild his career after multiple off the field incidences that lead to him leaving the Tennessee Titans.  

The best move for the Browns was trading for Houston's second round pick in 2018. The Browns traded their own fourth-round compensatory pick this year for a the second round pick, a sixth round pick, and quarterback Brock Osweiler. The brilliant part of this trade was getting the second round 2018 pick and Osweiler. The second round pick is another asset for the Browns to either draft or to be able to trade up for a certain player they like. But also getting Osweiler "kills two birds with one stone". Osweiler can be the backup quarterback, if the Browns decide to redshirt a rookie quarterback. But his $16 Million guaranteed for this season gets the Browns closer to the NFL minimum they need to spend.  

I believe the Browns probably offered Pryor a similar contract to the one Britt received. But Terrelle and his agent thought he could get way more than he ended up getting. Pryor ended up with a 1-year $6 Million "bet on himself" type deal. Not saying it was a bad idea for Pryor, but if he really wanted to stay in Cleveland, he should have just taken the Browns offer. It would have given Pryor his guaranteed money.

Overall, the Browns moves during the start of free agency have been positive on paper. They still have a lot of cap room to add a player or two on the defensive side of the ball. And hopefully re-sign Isaiah Crowell to be their "bell cow" running back lead by their new look offensive line.

Cleveland Browns Free Agency Day 1 Recap

The Cleveland Browns were making a ton of moves on the first day of the new league year. They had over 100 Million in cap space to use and boy they put it to good use.

It started this morning when the Browns and wide receiver Kenny Britt agreed to a four-year/ $32.5 Million, $17 Million guaranteed. The 28 year-old came off his best year in the NFL catching 68 passes for 1002 yards and five touchdowns. Britt also had five catches for 30+ yards...and the Browns only had six as a team for the entire season. Britt is a former first round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2009 and revived his career with the Rams, after multiple off the field incidents during his Titans tenure.

The Browns signed left guard Joel Bitonio to a new contract. six years/51.2 Million, 23.7 Guaranteed. Bitonio is one of the bright starts on the Browns and when healthy he is one of the top offensive linemen in the league. Bitonio is also only 25 years old and is only starting to reach his prime as a player.

On top of the Joel Bitonio extension, the Browns signed two offensive linemen. J.C. Tretter and Kevin Zeitler.

J.C. Tretter was the Green Bay Packers starting center to begin the season last year. But ended up suffering a MCL injury mid-season. Tretter's contract is for three years/$16.75 Million, with $10 Million of it Guaranteed. He is a former fourth round pick and last year was the first time he was named a starter. Tretter has a history of injuries but when he's played he was the fifth best center per ProFootballFocus, and is now projected to be the Browns starting center next season.

The Browns also signed former Bengal Kevin Zeitler. Zeitler's deal five-year/$60 Million, $32.5 Million Guaranteed, makes him the highest paid guard in NFL history.

Zeitler is a former first round pick in 2012 out of Wisconsin and has a history with Head Coach Hue Jackson. Zielter has only missed eight games in his career and hasn't missed a game since the 2014 season. The acquisitions of Tretter and Zeitler sure up the offensive line for whatever quarterback in under-center for the Browns in 2017.

Speaking of quarterbacks, the Browns also acquired Brock Osweiler, a 2017 sixth round pick, and a 2018 second round pick from the Texans for a 2017 fourth round pick. The Browns move is comparable to a salary dump trade in the NBA. Per multiple reports, the Browns are either going to trade Osweiler or just release him and eat the $16 Million dollar cap hit for this season. Some speculate the Browns are trying to trade multiple picks to either move up in the NFL draft or attempt to trade for Patriots' backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The Browns are also expected to release quarterback Robert Griffin III.

The Browns claimed former 2014 third round pick Center Marcus Martin from San Francisco. Martin Started 24 games in this three year with the 49ers. He's played center, right guard, and left tackle with majority of his games coming at the center position.

And that recaps day one of the new league year for the Cleveland Browns. After all of their moves the Browns still have $76 Million in cap space left and that could change with Brock Osweiler being dealt and/or Robert Griffin III being released.

Oh and...Terrelle Pryor still hasn't signed with a team...

- LeBron James has said, 'I'm Nike and Swoosh for the rest of my life'. LBJ and Nike agreed to a lifetime endorsement deal yesterday. Multiple media outlets have suggested James will receive up to $60M annually from his new Nike contract. Other shoe companies have offered lifetime deals such as Allen Iverson with Reebok, Adidas has David Beckham and Derrick Rose, this will be Nike's first lifetime contract ever offered in its 44 year existence. Maverick Carter will manage the deal, which was negotiated by Main Street Advisors' Paul Wachter, who has also negotiated the deal for John Henry to buy the Red Sox in 2002 and represented Beats By Dre in its $3 billion sale to Apple last May.

- The Browns placed guard Joel Bitonio on injured reserve with a ankle injury & sign OL Gabe Ikard to replace him on the roster. Ikard was signed as a undrafted free agent by the Titans in 2014. He was on their injured reserve list for his entire rookie season with a knee injury that he suffered in the preseason. In 2015, he was acquired by the Bills during final roster cuts and appeared in three games for Buffalo.

- BROWNS ON THE BENCH: Joe Haden, Andrew Hawkins, Taylor Gabriel, and Justin Gilbert remain in NFL's concussion protocol. RB Malcolm Johnson's groin injury seems to be severe and may be out for the rest of the season. WR Travis Benjamin is day to day with a shoulder injury. WR Marlon Moore is expected to play Sunday, but is day to day with rib injury.

- Mike Pettine didn't name a starter for Sunday's game against the 49ers, but it's expected that Johnny Manziel will get the start. From my perspective, no matter who the quarterback has been for the Browns they haven't been the problem. Maybe Johnny can bring back the Manziel Mafia and give the Browns a little magic.

- The Cleveland Indians announced Monday that it claimed OF Joey Butler off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays and placed him on the 40-man roster. In three seasons with the Rangers, Cardinals and Rays, Butler has compiled a .274 average with a .742 OPS, 8 HR and 31 RBI over 92 games. They designated pitcher Jayson Aquino for assignment to make room for Butler.

In other team news, the Indians have moved from 16th to 15th in first round of June draft because Arizona lost its No.1 pick by signing Zack Greinke.

- The Philadelphia 76ers have named Jerry Colangelo as the Special Advisor to the Managing General Partner and Chairman of Basketball Operations. Colangelo will serve as a adviser to team ownership. Colangelo made his reputation as a team builder after more than four decades of work with the Suns. More recently, he has helped rebuild USA Basketball after its bronze-medal finish in the 2004 Summer Olympics. The team has won consecutive gold medals (2008 and 2012) and FIBA World Championships (2010 and 2014) since he took over in 2006.  In 1992, Colangelo founded the Arena Football League's Arizona Rattlers and owned them until 2005. Under Colangelo's guidance, the Rattlers won Arena Bowl championships in 1994 and 1997. Wouldn't he be a great team president for the Browns?

- The Heisman trophy finalists are Alabama running back Derrick Henry, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. Henry led the nation with 23 rushing touchdowns and broke Herschel Walker's SEC rushing record with 1,986 yards. McCaffrey broke Barry Sanders record in all purpose yards in a season with 3,496. Watson finished the year with 3,512 yards passing and 30 touchdowns.

- I guess Oregon couldn't find their 'trail', but allowed Ezekiel to find it.

"Zeke" Elliot was on Marshawn Lynch "Beast Mode"-like levels, as he rushed for 246 yards and 4 touchdowns, in a 42-20 National Championship win over the Oregon Ducks.

Elliot rushed to #2 on the list of best rushing seasons at Ohio State with a total of 1,878 yards, just a little bit shy of Eddie George's record of 1,927 and the best in CFP history. Cleveland's own Cardale Jones passed for 246 yards going 16/23. Despite Ohio State having 4 turnovers, that almost had us beating ourselves, we beat the Ducks for the "Chip on Fleek"  Buuuuuut, who is the QB next year ?

Former OSU drum major and graduate Matt Bally said, "After seeing over 100 games in person, I honestly feel this is the most impressive OSU squad to play for the Buckeyes in the last 50 years.

- John Fox and the Denver Broncos will be mutual parting ways. Fox, who leaves Denver after 3 straight 12 win seasons but with a 2-3 postseason record, is already scheduled to interview for the open Chicago Bears head coaching job. Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio is a favorite for the Raiders head coach vacancy. The San Francisco 49ers are expected to meet with and make a final push for Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase tonight.

- It came out yesterday that Peyton Manning played the last month of the season with a torn right quadricep. The actual injury Manning is suffering from is a torn rectus femoris,which runs down the center of the thigh. Is this the last hurrah for Peyton Manning? I don't think so. Manning will get his required surgery,rehab go on vacation with his family and come back for one last season. But then again Manning will get paid $19 million dollars from the Broncos regardless. His 2015 salary is guarenteed if he was on the roster at the end of the 2014 season. So at this point,will he play next season? Your guess is about as good as mine. Before the Broncos hire a head coach (even one on their staff), they must go through the process including following the Rooney Rule.

- To no surprise, Lebron James has the most popular selling jersey based upon overall sales from NBAstore.com and Adidas. This is the 5th consecutive year and 2nd time as a Cavalier that James has held the number one spot. The next five jerseys belong to Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose and James' Cavaliers teammate, Kyrie Irving.

- Browns tackles Joe Thomas & Joel Bitonio collected post season awards by being voted to the Pro Football Writers of America All-NFL team. This is the 5th time Thomas has won the award. Thomas also was also voted to his 8th straight Pro Bowl and 5th All-Pro first team in 8 seasons. Joel Bitonio also was voted the runner up in Pro Football Focus' Offensive Rookie of the year.
